Intelligent systems in manufacturing: current developments and future prospects
Global competition and rapidly changing customer requirements are demanding increasing changes in manufacturing environments. Enterprises are required to constantly redesign their products and continuously reconfigure their manufacturing systems. Traditional approaches to manufacturing systems do not fully satisfy this new situation. Many authors have proposed that artificial intelligence will bring the flexibility and efficiency needed by manufacturing systems. This paper is a review of artificial intelligence techniques used in manufacturing systems. The paper first defines the components of a simplified intelligent manufacturing systems (IMS), the different Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques to be considered and then shows how these AI techniques are used for the components of IMS
Proactive, dynamic and multi-criteria scheduling of maintenance activities.
International audienceIn maintenance services skills management is directly linked to the performance of the service. A good human resource management will have an effect on the performance of the plant. Each task which has to be performed is characterised by the level of competence required. For each skill, human resources have different levels. The issue of making a decision about assignment and scheduling leads to finding the best resource and the correct time to perform the task. The solve this problem, managers have to take into account the different criteria such as the number of late tasks, the workload or the disturbance when inserting a new task into an existing planning. As there is a lot of estimated data, the managers also have to anticipate these uncertainties. To solve this multi-criteria problem, we propose a dynamic approach based on the kangaroo methodology. To deal with uncertainties, estimated data is modelled with fuzzy logic. This approach then offers the maintenance expert a choice between a set of the most robust possibilities
Risk-Based Optimal Scheduling for the Predictive Maintenance of Railway Infrastructure
In this thesis a risk-based decision support system to schedule the predictive maintenance activities, is proposed. The model deals with the maintenance planning of a railway infrastructure in which the due-dates are defined via failure risk analysis.The novelty of the approach consists of the risk concept introduction in railway maintenance scheduling, according to ISO 55000 guidelines, thus implying that the maintenance priorities are based on asset criticality, determined taking into account the relevant failure probability, related to asset degradation conditions, and the consequent damages
Scheduling Algorithms: Challenges Towards Smart Manufacturing
Collecting, processing, analyzing, and driving knowledge from large-scale real-time data is now realized with the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Deep Learning (DL). The breakthrough of Industry 4.0 lays a foundation for intelligent manufacturing. However, implementation challenges of scheduling algorithms in the context of smart manufacturing are not yet comprehensively studied. The purpose of this study is to show the scheduling No.s that need to be considered in the smart manufacturing paradigm. To attain this objective, the literature review is conducted in five stages using publish or perish tools from different sources such as Scopus, Pubmed, Crossref, and Google Scholar. As a result, the first contribution of this study is a critical analysis of existing production scheduling algorithms\u27 characteristics and limitations from the viewpoint of smart manufacturing. The other contribution is to suggest the best strategies for selecting scheduling algorithms in a real-world scenario
RELIABILITY CENTERED MAINTENANCE (RCM) FOR ASSET MANAGEMENT IN ELECTRIC POWER DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM
The purpose of Maintenance is to extend equipment life time or at least the mean
time to the next failure.
Asset Maintenance, which is part of asset management, incurs expenditure but
could result in very costly consequences if not performed or performed too little.
It may not even be economical to perform it too frequently.
The decision therefore, to eliminate or minimize the risk of equipment failure
must not be based on trial and error as it was done in the past.
In this thesis, an enhanced Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM)
methodology that is based on a quantitative relationship between preventive
maintenance (PM) performed at system component level and the overall system
reliability was applied to identify the distribution components that are critical to
system reliability.
Maintenance model relating probability of failure to maintenance activity was
developed for maintainable distribution components. The Markov maintenance
Model developed was then used to predict the remaining life of transformer
insulation for a selected distribution system. This Model incorporates various
levels of insulation deterioration and minor maintenance state. If current state of
insulation ageing is assumed from diagnostic testing and inspection, the Model is
capable of computing the average time before insulation failure occurs.
The results obtained from both Model simulation and the computer program of
the mathematical formulation of the expected remaining life verified the
mathematical analysis of the developed model in this thesis.
The conclusion from this study shows that it is beneficial to base asset
management decisions on a model that is verified with processed, analysed and
tested outage data such as the model developed in this thesis

Intelligent power system operation in an uncertain environment
This dissertation presents some challenging problems in power system operations. The efficacy of a heuristic method, namely, modified discrete particle swarm optimization (MDPSO) algorithm is illustrated and compared with other methods by solving the reliability based generator maintenance scheduling (GMS) optimization problem of a practical hydrothermal power system. The concept of multiple swarms is incorporated into the MDPSO algorithm to form a robust multiple swarms-modified particle swarm optimization (MS-MDPSO) algorithm and applied to solving the GMS problem on two power systems. Heuristic methods are proposed to circumvent the problems of imposed non-smooth assumptions common with the classical approaches in solving the challenging dynamic economic dispatch problem. The multi-objective combined economic and emission dispatch (MO-CEED) optimization problem for a wind-hydrothermal power system is formulated and solved in this dissertation. This MO-CEED problem formulation becomes a challenging problem because of the presence of uncertainty in wind power. A family of distributed optimal Pareto fronts for the MO-CEED problem has been generated for different scenarios of capacity credit of wind power. A real-time (RT) network stability index is formulated for determining a power system\u27s ability to continue to provide service (electric energy) in a RT manner in case of an unforeseen catastrophic contingency. Cascading stages of fuzzy inference system is applied to combine non real-time (NRT) and RT power system assessments. NRT analysis involves eigenvalue and transient energy analysis.
