Meso-scale FDM material layout design strategies under manufacturability constraints and fracture conditions
In the manufacturability-driven design (MDD) perspective, manufacturability of the product or system is the most important of the design requirements. In addition to being able to ensure that complex designs (e.g., topology optimization) are manufacturable with a given process or process family, MDD also helps mechanical designers to take advantage of unique process-material effects generated during manufacturing. One of the most recognizable examples of this comes from the scanning-type family of additive manufacturing (AM) processes; the most notable and familiar member of this family is the fused deposition modeling (FDM) or fused filament fabrication (FFF) process. This process works by selectively depositing uniform, approximately isotropic beads or elements of molten thermoplastic material (typically structural engineering plastics) in a series of pre-specified traces to build each layer of the part. There are many interesting 2-D and 3-D mechanical design problems that can be explored by designing the layout of these elements. The resulting structured, hierarchical material (which is both manufacturable and customized layer-by-layer within the limits of the process and material) can be defined as a manufacturing process-driven structured material (MPDSM). This dissertation explores several practical methods for designing these element layouts for 2-D and 3-D meso-scale mechanical problems, focusing ultimately on design-for-fracture. Three different fracture conditions are explored: (1) cases where a crack must be prevented or stopped, (2) cases where the crack must be encouraged or accelerated, and (3) cases where cracks must grow in a simple pre-determined pattern. Several new design tools, including a mapping method for the FDM manufacturability constraints, three major literature reviews, the collection, organization, and analysis of several large (qualitative and quantitative) multi-scale datasets on the fracture behavior of FDM-processed materials, some new experimental equipment, and the refinement of a fast and simple g-code generator based on commercially-available software, were developed and refined to support the design of MPDSMs under fracture conditions. The refined design method and rules were experimentally validated using a series of case studies (involving both design and physical testing of the designs) at the end of the dissertation. Finally, a simple design guide for practicing engineers who are not experts in advanced solid mechanics nor process-tailored materials was developed from the results of this project.U of I OnlyAuthor's request
Machine Learning Applications in Studying Mental Health Among Immigrants and Racial and Ethnic Minorities: A Systematic Review
Background: The use of machine learning (ML) in mental health (MH) research
is increasing, especially as new, more complex data types become available to
analyze. By systematically examining the published literature, this review aims
to uncover potential gaps in the current use of ML to study MH in vulnerable
populations of immigrants, refugees, migrants, and racial and ethnic
minorities.
Methods: In this systematic review, we queried Google Scholar for ML-related
terms, MH-related terms, and a population of a focus search term strung
together with Boolean operators. Backward reference searching was also
conducted. Included peer-reviewed studies reported using a method or
application of ML in an MH context and focused on the populations of interest.
We did not have date cutoffs. Publications were excluded if they were narrative
or did not exclusively focus on a minority population from the respective
country. Data including study context, the focus of mental healthcare, sample,
data type, type of ML algorithm used, and algorithm performance was extracted
from each.
Results: Our search strategies resulted in 67,410 listed articles from Google
Scholar. Ultimately, 12 were included. All the articles were published within
the last 6 years, and half of them studied populations within the US. Most
reviewed studies used supervised learning to explain or predict MH outcomes.
Some publications used up to 16 models to determine the best predictive power.
Almost half of the included publications did not discuss their cross-validation
method.
Conclusions: The included studies provide proof-of-concept for the potential
use of ML algorithms to address MH concerns in these special populations, few
as they may be. Our systematic review finds that the clinical application of
these models for classifying and predicting MH disorders is still under
development
The Metaverse: Survey, Trends, Novel Pipeline Ecosystem & Future Directions
The Metaverse offers a second world beyond reality, where boundaries are
non-existent, and possibilities are endless through engagement and immersive
experiences using the virtual reality (VR) technology. Many disciplines can
benefit from the advancement of the Metaverse when accurately developed,
including the fields of technology, gaming, education, art, and culture.
Nevertheless, developing the Metaverse environment to its full potential is an
ambiguous task that needs proper guidance and directions. Existing surveys on
the Metaverse focus only on a specific aspect and discipline of the Metaverse
and lack a holistic view of the entire process. To this end, a more holistic,
multi-disciplinary, in-depth, and academic and industry-oriented review is
required to provide a thorough study of the Metaverse development pipeline. To
address these issues, we present in this survey a novel multi-layered pipeline
ecosystem composed of (1) the Metaverse computing, networking, communications
and hardware infrastructure, (2) environment digitization, and (3) user
interactions. For every layer, we discuss the components that detail the steps
of its development. Also, for each of these components, we examine the impact
of a set of enabling technologies and empowering domains (e.g., Artificial
Intelligence, Security & Privacy, Blockchain, Business, Ethics, and Social) on
its advancement. In addition, we explain the importance of these technologies
to support decentralization, interoperability, user experiences, interactions,
and monetization. Our presented study highlights the existing challenges for
each component, followed by research directions and potential solutions. To the
best of our knowledge, this survey is the most comprehensive and allows users,
scholars, and entrepreneurs to get an in-depth understanding of the Metaverse
ecosystem to find their opportunities and potentials for contribution
Full trajectory optimizing operator inference for reduced-order modeling using differentiable programming
Accurate and inexpensive Reduced Order Models (ROMs) for forecasting
turbulent flows can facilitate rapid design iterations and thus prove critical
for predictive control in engineering problems. Galerkin projection based
Reduced Order Models (GP-ROMs), derived by projecting the Navier-Stokes
equations on a truncated Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) basis, are
popular because of their low computational costs and theoretical foundations.
However, the accuracy of traditional GP-ROMs degrades over long time prediction
horizons. To address this issue, we extend the recently proposed Neural
Galerkin Projection (NeuralGP) data driven framework to
compressibility-dominated transonic flow, considering a prototypical problem of
a buffeting NACA0012 airfoil governed by the full Navier-Stokes equations. The
algorithm maintains the form of the ROM-ODE obtained from the Galerkin
projection; however coefficients are learned directly from the data using
gradient descent facilitated by differentiable programming. This blends the
strengths of the physics driven GP-ROM and purely data driven neural
network-based techniques, resulting in a computationally cheaper model that is
easier to interpret. We show that the NeuralGP method minimizes a more rigorous
full trajectory error norm compared to a linearized error definition optimized
by the calibration procedure. We also find that while both procedures stabilize
the ROM by displacing the eigenvalues of the linear dynamics matrix of the
ROM-ODE to the complex left half-plane, the NeuralGP algorithm adds more
dissipation to the trailing POD modes resulting in its better long-term
performance. The results presented highlight the superior accuracy of the
NeuralGP technique compared to the traditional calibrated GP-ROM method
Complement mediated synapse elimination in schizophrenia
Schizophrenia (SCZ) is a devastating psychiatric disorder with a typically age of onset in late adolescence. The heritability is estimated to be in between 60-80% and large-scale genome-wide studies have revealed a prominent polygenic component to SCZ risk and identified more than three-hundred common risk variants. Despite a better understanding of which genetic risk variants that increases SCZ risk, it has been challenging to map out the pathophysiology of the disorder. This has stalled the development of target drugs and current treatment options display moderate efficacy and are prone to produce side-effects. SCZ is generally considered a neurodevelopmental disorder and it was proposed more than forty years ago that physiological removal of less active synapses in adolescence, i.e., synaptic pruning, is increased in SCZ and hereby causes the core symptoms of the disorder.
This theory has then been supported by post-mortem brain tissue and imaging studies displaying decreased synapse density in SCZ. More recently, it was then shown that the most strongly associated risk loci can largely be explained by copy numbers of a gene coding for the complement factor 4A (C4A). As microglia prune synapses with the help of complement signalling, we therefore decided to use a recently developed human 2D in vitro assay to assess microglial uptake of synaptic structures in models based on cells from individuals with SCZ and healthy controls (study I). We observed excessive uptake of synaptic structures in SCZ models and by mixing synapses from healthy controls with microglia from SCZ patients, and vice versa, we showed the contribution of microglial and neuronal factors contributing to this excessive uptake of synaptic structures.
We then developed an in vitro assay to study neuronal complement deposition dependent on copy numbers of C4A in the neuronal lines. Complement 3 (C3) deposition increased by C4A copy numbers but was independent of C4B copy numbers (also unrelated to SCZ risk). Similar C4A copy numbers correlated with the extent of microglial uptake of synapses. Microglial uptake of synaptic structures could also be inhibited by the tetracycline minocycline that also decreased risk of developing SCZ in an electronic health record cohort.
In study II, we cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from first-episode psychosis patients to measure protein levels of C4A. In two independent cohorts, we observed elevated C4A levels (although not C4B levels) in first-episode patients that later were to develop SCZ and could show correlations with markers of synapse density. However, elevated C4A levels could not fully be explained by more copy numbers of C4A in individuals with SCZ and in vitro experiments revealed that SCZ-associated cytokines can induce C4A mRNA expression while also correlating with C4A in patient-derived CSF.
In study III, we set-up a 3D brain organoid models to more fully comprehensively capture processes in the developing human brain and then also included innately developing microglia. We display synaptic pruning within these models and use single cell RNA sequencing to validate them.
In conclusion, this thesis uses patient-derived cellular modelling to uncover a disease mechanism in SCZ that link genetic risk variants with bona fide protein changes in living patients
DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF ANDROID-BASED TRADITIONAL INDONESIAN CLOTHING IMAGE GUESSING GAME
In terms of cultural traditions, Indonesia is home to a wide variety of very diverse practices. As a result of different regions of the country, Indonesia is home to diverse cultural traditions. Traditional clothing is an important aspect of the Indonesian culture. The traditions and culture of each region are reflected in the clothes worn at traditional ceremonies; in addition, traditional clothing is a decisive feature of the culture of each region. Concern for the maintenance of national culture, which relates to the wearing of indigenous clothing, has been significantly reduced because of the passage of time. For example, one of the main reasons why people's interest in traditional clothing is not as strong as it used to be is because there is not enough socialization and presentation of Indonesian culture in society. The goal of this study project is to create a learning app for Android based on the guesswork of traditional Indonesian clothing. Research and Development techniques were selected as the proximity used for this investigation. Research and Development As a consequence of this research, an educational game that allows users to predict photos of traditional clothing from Indonesia will be produced on the Android platform. This game will also provide information to players about traditional musical instruments that can be found in Indonesia. It is hoped that educational video games will help in the process of exposing children to pre-existing cultures, and such games can also be seen as offering new perspectives to children. It is possible to draw the conclusion, based on the findings of tests conducted using the black box approach, that this application is capable of functioning in an appropriate way. Moreover, it can provide android smartphone customers with instructional games.

A Multilevel Review of Curvilinear Effects on the Creative Work of Teams
Their positive potential often diminishes or even turns negative when antecedents of creativity are taken too far. Despite empirical evidence supporting such curvilinear effects on important outcomes of creative work at the individual and team levels, their theorizing remains rather incomplete, with more attention being paid to explaining the curves’ upward rather than downward slopes. By developing a multilevel antecedent-benefit-cost (ABC) framework that synthesizes 120 quantitative-empirical studies on curvilinear effects, this review guides creativity and innovation literature toward conceptual clarity and methodological precision across levels. This is important because the cost-related mechanisms of certain antecedents are still not well understood
Examples of works to practice staccato technique in clarinet instrument
Klarnetin staccato tekniğini güçlendirme aşamaları eser çalışmalarıyla uygulanmıştır. Staccato
Sekiz özgün eser çalışmasının her
