Structure-Preserving Model Reduction of Physical Network Systems
This paper considers physical network systems where the energy storage is naturally associated to the nodes of the graph, while the edges of the graph correspond to static couplings. The first sections deal with the linear case, covering examples such as mass-damper and hydraulic systems, which have a structure that is similar to symmetric consensus dynamics. The last section is concerned with a specific class of nonlinear physical network systems; namely detailed-balanced chemical reaction networks governed by mass action kinetics. In both cases, linear and nonlinear, the structure of the dynamics is similar, and is based on a weighted Laplacian matrix, together with an energy function capturing the energy storage at the nodes. We discuss two methods for structure-preserving model reduction. The first one is clustering; aggregating the nodes of the underlying graph to obtain a reduced graph. The second approach is based on neglecting the energy storage at some of the nodes, and subsequently eliminating those nodes (called Kron reduction).</p

Development and applications of the finite point method to compressible aerodynamics problems
This work deals with the development and application of the Finite Point
Method (FPM) to compressible aerodynamics problems. The research focuses
mainly on investigating the capabilities of the meshless technique to address
practical problems, one of the most outstanding issues in meshless methods.
The FPM spatial approximation is studied firstly, with emphasis on aspects of
the methodology that can be improved to increase its robustness and accuracy.
Suitable ranges for setting the relevant approximation parameters and the
performance likely to be attained in practice are determined. An automatic
procedure to adjust the approximation parameters is also proposed to simplify
the application of the method, reducing problem- and user-dependence
without affecting the flexibility of the meshless technique.
The discretization of the flow equations is carried out following wellestablished
approaches, but drawing on the meshless character of the methodology. In order to meet the requirements of practical applications, the procedures are designed and implemented placing emphasis on robustness and efficiency (a simplification of the basic FPM technique is proposed to this end). The flow solver is based on an upwind spatial discretization of the convective fluxes (using the approximate Riemann solver of Roe) and an explicit time integration scheme. Two additional artificial diffusion schemes are also proposed to suit those cases of study in which computational cost is a major concern. The performance of the flow solver is evaluated in order to determine the potential of the meshless approach. The accuracy, computational cost and parallel scalability of the method are studied in
comparison with a conventional FEM-based technique.
Finally, practical applications and extensions of the flow solution scheme are
presented. The examples provided are intended not only to show the
capabilities of the FPM, but also to exploit meshless advantages. Automatic hadaptive procedures, moving domain and fluid-structure interaction problems,
as well as a preliminary approach to solve high-Reynolds viscous flows, are a
sample of the topics explored.
All in all, the results obtained are satisfactorily accurate and competitive in
terms of computational cost (if compared with a similar mesh-based
implementation). This indicates that meshless advantages can be exploited
with efficiency and constitutes a good starting point towards more challenging
applications
Advances in radial and spherical basis function interpolation
The radial basis function method is a widely used technique for interpolation of scattered data. The method is meshfree, easy to implement independently of the number of dimensions, and for certain types of basis functions it provides spectral accuracy. All these properties also apply to the spherical basis function method, but the class of applicable basis functions, positive definite functions on the sphere, is not as well studied and understood as the radial basis functions for the Euclidean space. The aim of this thesis is mainly to introduce new techniques for construction of Euclidean basis functions and to establish new criteria for positive definiteness of functions on spheres.
We study multiply and completely monotone functions, which are important for radial basis function interpolation because their monotonicity properties are in some cases necessary and in some cases sufficient for the positive definiteness of a function. We enhance many results which were originally stated for completely monotone functions to the bigger class of multiply monotone functions and use those to derive new radial basis functions. Further, we study the connection of monotonicity properties and positive definiteness of spherical basis functions. In the processes several new sufficient and some new necessary conditions for positive definiteness of spherical radial functions are proven. We also describe different techniques of constructing new radial and spherical basis functions, for example shifts. For the shifted versions in the Euclidean space we prove conditions for positive definiteness, compute their Fourier transform and give integral representations. Furthermore, we prove that the cosine transforms of multiply monotone functions are positive definite under some mild extra conditions. Additionally, a new class of radial basis functions which is derived as the Fourier transforms of the generalised
Gaussian φ(t) = e−tβ is investigated.
We conclude with a comparison of the spherical basis functions, which we derived in this thesis and those spherical basis functions well known. For this numerical test a set of test functions as well as recordings of electroencephalographic data are used to evaluate the performance of the different basis functions

Postprint (published version
Nicht-oszillierende Verfahren höherer Ordnung unter Verwendung von Interpolating Moving Least Squares Rekonstruktion für hyperbolische Erhaltungssätze
Meshfree methods have attracted much attention for the development and their applications in the recent years. The methods are commonly formulated using the Moving Least Squares (MLS) methods. The interpolation version of the methods is determined by introducing the singular weight functions for constructing the shape functions and called as Interpolating Moving Least Squares (IMLS) methods. Since the shape functions of the IMLS interpolants satisfy the Kronecker delta, the IMLS methods have the property of nodal interpolation. For more information of the IMLS method the explicit formulae of the derivatives of the IMLS interpolants are derived. The methods are applied to a linear scalar conservation law with the Euler and Lax-Wendroff time discretizations.
The higher order schemes are presented employing a Taylor series expansion. The field variables and their successive derivatives are reconstructed using the IMLS methods. An analysis of the L_2-norm of this method is given. The Weighted Essentially Non-Oscillatory (WENO) schemes are adopted in the new schemes to prevent spurious oscillation. Our new methods based on staggered grids are discretized on space and the central Runge-Kutta schemes are used for time integration. Numerical results show that our new methods achieve the expected accuracy from an analysis of L_2-norm. Representative simulations show that the proposed methods are applicable to hyperbolic conservation laws.
