    Solving the waste collection problem from a multiobjective perspective: New methodologies and case studies

Distintos factores han de tenerse en cuenta para realizar un servicio eficiente. En este trabajo se desarrolla una herramienta para analizar y resolver el problema de la recogida de residuos sólidos en Málaga. Tras un análisis exhaustivo de los datos, se aborda el problema real como un problema de rutas multiobjetivo con capacidad limitada. Para los problemas multiobjetivo, no suele existir una única solución óptima, sino un conjunto de soluciones eficientes de Pareto. Las características del problema hacen inviable su resolución de forma exacta, por lo que se aplican distintas estrategias metaheurísticas para obtener una buena aproximación. En particular, se combinan las técnicas de GRASP, Path Relinking y Variable Neighborhood Search, que son adaptadas a la perspectiva multicriterio. Se trata de una aproximación en dos fases: una primera aproximación de la frontera eficiente se genera mediante un GRASP multiobjetivo. Tres son los métodos propuestos para la primera aproximación, dos de ellos derivados de la publicación de Martí et al. (2015) y el último se apoya en la función escalarizada de logro de Wierzbicki (Wierzbicki, 1980) para distintas combinaciones de pesos. A continuación, esta aproximación es mejorada con una versión de Path Relinking o Variable Neighborhood Search, con un punto de referencia diseñado para problemas multiobjetivo. Una vez generada la aproximación de la frontera eficiente, el proceso de obtención de la solución que más se adecúa a las preferencias de los gestores se basa en el desarrollo de un método interactivo sin trade – off, derivado de la filosofía NAUTILUS (Miettinen et al. 2010). Para evitar gastos de cómputo extensos, esta metodología se apoya en una pre - computación de los elementos de la frontera eficiente

    The aim of this paper is to propose a framework in order to solve the real-world waste collection problem in a city of southern Spain modeled as an Asymmetric Vehicle Routing Problem (AVRP) with side constraints and several variations. In this problem, not only are vehicle capacity and temporal constraints considered but multiple trips are also allowed. Furthermore, two objectives will be considered: the minimization of the total distance and the balance of the working day. Finally, in order to select a single solution among all efficient (or nondominated) solutions, an interactive method is designed using reference points

    Routing-problem approaches to the design of a system for urban waste collection

    Programa de Doctorado en Estadística e Investigación OperativaA routing problem arises when there is a set of demand points that have to be served by finding the "best" routes in order to provide the required service. Finding these "best" routes consists of optimizing one or several objective functions associated to these routes. This Ph.D. thesis is motivated by a real-world routing problem. Specifically, we focus on the waste collection problem in the city of Seville and its resolution by using approximate algorithms. Waste collection is an interesting routing problem not only due to its high practical relevance, but also because it constitutes one of the most difficull operational problems faced by local authorities in any large cily. Seville has a population of 703,021 inhabitants (according lo official statistics of 2011) and is ranked as the fourth largest city of Spain. Urban waste is collected every single day of the year, i.e., seven days a week. The road network of Seville can be represented by a directed graph with 99,427 points that correspond to street crossings and dead-end streets, 224,638 fragments of streets delimited by two points and 1,642 streets where there are containers placed. According to the local authority responsible for the waste colleclion in the city (February, 2012), 20 vehicles currently collect the waste of 2,821 containers placed at different locations all over the city. The annual waste generated amounts lo approximately 23.2 litres per inhabitant. This extremely tough problem can be described as follows. The waste generated in the city is the responsibility of the local authorities. Citizens deposit their refuse in containers along the streets and these containers must all be collected every day by a fleet of vehicles whose capacity cannot be exceeded.Each vehicle must travel along a route that is defined as a sequence of two or more trips due to the relatively small capacity of each vehicle, and the length of the working day must be satisfied. In the initial trip or open trip, vehicles leave the depot and start lo collecl refuse and once their capacity is full then go to the landfill. When vehicles have emptied the refuse into the landfill, they then begin as many closed trips as necessary without exceeding the working day. In the closed trips, vehicles slart their trajectory from the landfill and return back lo it when their capacity is full again. In closing, once vehicles have deposited the last load of refuse in the landfillthey all return lo the depot. This Ph.D. thesis is organized as follows.In Chapter 1, a survey of routing problems and its variants is presented. We draw a distinction between vehicle (node) routing problems and are routing problems. Furthermore, in order to equalize the two classes of problems, we describe well-known transformations and we propase a new and general transformation. This transformation can be seen as a generalization of the transformations that have been proposed in the literature so far. In Chapter 2, background information on well-known solution melhods is provided. In particular, a quick outline is drawn of the most popular, exact and approximate methods used to solve routing problems. Furthermore, a parallel is drawn between single-objective optimization problems, which find optimal or feasible solutions, and multi­ objective optimization problems, which provide non-dominated or Pareto optimal solutions. We then describe performance metrics, which enables the quatily of the solutions obtained lo be measured. The main contribution of this chapter is that two versions of routing problems are solved by using new metaheuristics. Specifically, a new algorithm is designed to salve single-objective routing problems, in which the objective is to minimize the total routing cost, and tour algorithms are designed to solve multi-objective routing problems, in which we do not only minimize the total routing cost but also balance the routes. In particular, the proposed algorithms combine two metaheuristics: Greedy Randomized Adaptive Search Procedure and Variable Neighborhood Descent. In Chapter 3, the current waste collection problem in Seville is presented progressively. First, we focus on describing and modelling the waste collection in this city. The real-world problem cannot be solved by using exact methods, and hence the validity of the formulation is proved by using a number of small and mediurn-sized literature problems. The limitation imposed on the solution of these problems by using exact methods leads us to use approximate methods to solve the real-world problem. The proposed algorithms presented in Chapter 2 are therefore adapted to solve the real-world problem. Again, both approaches are taken into account: the single­ objective problem, in which the objective is to minimize the total distance travelled by all the vehicles; and the multi­ objective problem, in which the objectives include the minimization of the total distance as well as a balance across the working day of the workers in each route.     A Fuzzy Simheuristic for the Permutation Flow Shop Problem under Stochastic and Fuzzy Uncertainty

    [EN] Stochastic, as well as fuzzy uncertainty, can be found in most real-world systems. Considering both types of uncertainties simultaneously makes optimization problems incredibly challenging. In this paper, we analyze the permutation flow shop problem (PFSP) with both stochastic and fuzzy processing times. The main goal is to find the solution (permutation of jobs) that minimizes the expected makespan. However, due to the existence of uncertainty, other characteristics of the solution are also taken into account. In particular, we illustrate how survival analysis can be employed to enrich the probabilistic information given to decision-makers. To solve the aforementioned optimization problem, we extend the concept of a simheuristic framework so it can also include fuzzy elements. Hence, both stochastic and fuzzy uncertainty are simultaneously incorporated in the PFSP. In order to test our approach, classical PFSP instances have been adapted and extended, so that processing times become either stochastic or fuzzy. Aware of this reality, this document is intended to be a starting point for Master's and Doctoral degree students who want to work in a line of research recently proposed: green routing. The state of the art of the vehicle routing problem is presented in this paper, listing its variants, models and methodologies for solution. Furthermore, the proposed interaction between variants of classical routing problems and environmental effects of its operations, known in the literature as Green-VRP is presented. The goal is to generate a discussion in which mathematical models and solution strategies that can be applied within organizations that consider within their objectives an efficient and sustainable operation are posed. En el gerenciamiento eficiente de la cadena de suministro aparece la gestión óptima del transporte de insumos y productos terminados. Los costos asociados al transporte tienen impacto directo sobre el valor final que deben pagar los consumidores, que además de requerir productos competitivos también exigen que los mismos sean generados en organizaciones amigables con el medioambiente. Consientes de esa realidad este documento pretende ser un punto de partida para estudiantes de maestría y doctorado que quieran trabajar en una línea de investigación propuesta recientemente: el ruteo verde. En este trabajo se muestra un estado del arte del problema de ruteo de vehículos, enumerando sus variantes, modelos y metodologías de solución. Además, se presenta la interacción que se ha propuesto entre variantes clásicas de los problemas de ruteo y los efectos ambientales de su operación, denominados en la literatura como Green-VRP.     Applications of biased-randomized algorithms and simheuristics in integrated logistics

    Transportation and logistics (T&L) activities play a vital role in the development of many businesses from different industries. With the increasing number of people living in urban areas, the expansion of on-demand economy and e-commerce activities, the number of services from transportation and delivery has considerably increased. Consequently, several urban problems have been potentialized, such as traffic congestion and pollution. Several related problems can be formulated as a combinatorial optimization problem (COP). Since most of them are NP-Hard, the finding of optimal solutions through exact solution methods is often impractical in a reasonable amount of time. In realistic settings, the increasing need for 'instant' decision-making further refutes their use in real life. Under these circumstances, this thesis aims at: (i) identifying realistic COPs from different industries; (ii) developing different classes of approximate solution approaches to solve the identified T&L problems; (iii) conducting a series of computational experiments to validate and measure the performance of the developed approaches. The novel concept of 'agile optimization' is introduced, which refers to the combination of biased-randomized heuristics with parallel computing to deal with real-time decision-making.Las actividades de transporte y logística (T&L) juegan un papel vital en el desarrollo de muchas empresas de diferentes industrias. Con el creciente número de personas que viven en áreas urbanas, la expansión de la economía a lacarta y las actividades de comercio electrónico, el número de servicios de transporte y entrega ha aumentado considerablemente. En consecuencia, se han potencializado varios problemas urbanos, como la congestión del tráfico y la contaminación. Varios problemas relacionados pueden formularse como un problema de optimización combinatoria (COP). Dado que la mayoría de ellos son NP-Hard, la búsqueda de soluciones óptimas a través de métodos de solución exactos a menudo no es práctico en un período de tiempo razonable. En entornos realistas, la creciente necesidad de una toma de decisiones "instantánea" refuta aún más su uso en la vida real. En estas circunstancias, esta tesis tiene como objetivo: (i) identificar COP realistas de diferentes industrias; (ii) desarrollar diferentes clases de enfoques de solución aproximada para resolver los problemas de T&L identificados; (iii) realizar una serie de experimentos computacionales para validar y medir el desempeño de los enfoques desarrollados. Se introduce el nuevo concepto de optimización ágil, que se refiere a la combinación de heurísticas aleatorias sesgadas con computación paralela para hacer frente a la toma de decisiones en tiempo real.Les activitats de transport i logística (T&L) tenen un paper vital en el desenvolupament de moltes empreses de diferents indústries. Amb l'augment del nombre de persones que viuen a les zones urbanes, l'expansió de l'economia a la carta i les activitats de comerç electrònic, el nombre de serveis del transport i el lliurament ha augmentat considerablement. En conseqüència, s'han potencialitzat diversos problemes urbans, com ara la congestió del trànsit i la contaminació. Es poden formular diversos problemes relacionats com a problema d'optimització combinatòria (COP). Com que la majoria són NP-Hard, la recerca de solucions òptimes mitjançant mètodes de solució exactes sovint no és pràctica en un temps raonable. En entorns realistes, la creixent necessitat de prendre decisions "instantànies" refuta encara més el seu ús a la vida real. En aquestes circumstàncies, aquesta tesi té com a objectiu: (i) identificar COP realistes de diferents indústries; (ii) desenvolupar diferents classes d'aproximacions aproximades a la solució per resoldre els problemes identificats de T&L; (iii) la realització d'una sèrie d'experiments computacionals per validar i mesurar el rendiment dels enfocaments desenvolupats.     Preventing premature convergence and proving the optimality in evolutionary algorithms

    http://ea2013.inria.fr//proceedings.pdfInternational audienceEvolutionary Algorithms (EA) usually carry out an efficient exploration of the search-space, but get often trapped in local minima and do not prove the optimality of the solution. Interval-based techniques, on the other hand, yield a numerical proof of optimality of the solution. However, they may fail to converge within a reasonable time due to their inability to quickly compute a good approximation of the global minimum and their exponential complexity. The contribution of this paper is a hybrid algorithm called Charibde in which a particular EA, Differential Evolution, cooperates with a Branch and Bound algorithm endowed with interval propagation techniques. It prevents premature convergence toward local optima and outperforms both deterministic and stochastic existing approaches. We demonstrate its efficiency on a benchmark of highly multimodal problems, for which we provide previously unknown global minima and certification of optimality
