    Multilayered Heterogeneous Parallelism Applied to Atmospheric Constituent Transport Simulation

    Heterogeneous multicore chipsets with many levels of parallelism are becoming increasingly common in high-performance computing systems. Effective use of parallelism in these new chipsets constitutes the challenge facing a new generation of large scale scientific computing applications. This study examines methods for improving the performance of two-dimensional and three-dimensional atmospheric constituent transport simulation on the Cell Broadband Engine Architecture (CBEA). A function offloading approach is used in a 2D transport module, and a vector stream processing approach is used in a 3D transport module. Two methods for transferring incontiguous data between main memory and accelerator local storage are compared. By leveraging the heterogeneous parallelism of the CBEA, the 3D transport module achieves performance comparable to two nodes of an IBM BlueGene/P, or eight Intel Xeon cores, on a single PowerXCell 8i chip.     DLP+TLP processors for the next generation of media workloads

    Future media workloads will require about two levels of magnitude the performance achieved by current general purpose processors. High uni-threaded performance will be needed to accomplish real-time constraints together with huge computational throughput, as next generation of media workloads will be eminently multithreaded (MPEG-4/MPEG-7). In order to fulfil the challenge of providing both good uni-threaded performance and throughput, we propose to join the simultaneous multithreading execution paradigm (SMT) together with the ability to execute media-oriented streaming /spl mu/-SIMD instructions. This paper evaluates the performance of two different aggressive SMT processors: one with conventional /spl mu/-SIMD extensions (such as MMX) and one with longer streaming vector /spl mu/-SIMD extensions. We will show that future media workloads are, in fact, dominated by the scalar performance.     <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The exponential growth of available biological data has caused bioinformatics to be rapidly moving towards a data-intensive, computational science. As a result, the computational power needed by bioinformatics applications is growing exponentially as well. The recent emergence of accelerator technologies has made it possible to achieve an excellent improvement in execution time for many bioinformatics applications, compared to current general-purpose platforms. In this paper, we demonstrate how the PlayStation<sup>Âź </sup>3, powered by the Cell Broadband Engine, can be used as a computational platform to accelerate the Smith-Waterman algorithm.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>For large datasets, our implementation on the PlayStation<sup>Âź </sup>3 provides a significant improvement in running time compared to other implementations such as SSEARCH, Striped Smith-Waterman and CUDA. Our implementation achieves a peak performance of up to 3,646 MCUPS.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The results from our experiments demonstrate that the PlayStation<sup>Âź </sup>3 console can be used as an efficient low cost computational platform for high performance sequence alignment applications.</p

    A compiler extension for parallelizing arrays automatically on the cell heterogeneous processor

    This paper describes the approaches taken to extend an array programming language compiler using a Virtual SIMD Machine (VSM) model for parallelizing array operations on Cell Broadband Engine heterogeneous machine. This development is part of ongoing work at the University of Glasgow for developing array compilers that are beneficial for applications in many areas such as graphics, multimedia, image processing and scientific computation. Our extended compiler, which is built upon the VSM interface, eases the parallelization processes by allowing automatic parallelisation without the need for any annotations or process directives. The preliminary results demonstrate significant improvement especially on data-intensive applications

    ACOTES project: Advanced compiler technologies for embedded streaming

    Streaming applications are built of data-driven, computational components, consuming and producing unbounded data streams. Streaming oriented systems have become dominant in a wide range of domains, including embedded applications and DSPs. However, programming efficiently for streaming architectures is a challenging task, having to carefully partition the computation and map it to processes in a way that best matches the underlying streaming architecture, taking into account the distributed resources (memory, processing, real-time requirements) and communication overheads (processing and delay). These challenges have led to a number of suggested solutions, whose goal is to improve the programmer’s productivity in developing applications that process massive streams of data on programmable, parallel embedded architectures. StreamIt is one such example. Another more recent approach is that developed by the ACOTES project (Advanced Compiler Technologies for Embedded Streaming). The ACOTES approach for streaming applications consists of compiler-assisted mapping of streaming tasks to highly parallel systems in order to maximize cost-effectiveness, both in terms of energy and in terms of design effort. The analysis and transformation techniques automate large parts of the partitioning and mapping process, based on the properties of the application domain, on the quantitative information about the target systems, and on programmer directives.     DyPS: Dynamic Processor Switching for Energy-Aware Video Decoding on Multi-core SoCs

    In addition to General Purpose Processors (GPP), Multicore SoCs equipping modern mobile devices contain specialized Digital Signal Processor designed with the aim to provide better performance and low energy consumption properties. However, the experimental measurements we have achieved revealed that system overhead, in case of DSP video decoding, causes drastic performances drop and energy efficiency as compared to the GPP decoding. This paper describes DyPS, a new approach for energy-aware processor switching (GPP or DSP) according to the video quality . We show the pertinence of our solution in the context of adaptive video decoding and describe an implementation on an embedded Linux operating system with the help of the GStreamer framework.     Network Coding on Heterogeneous Multi-Core Processors for Wireless Sensor Networks

    While network coding is well known for its efficiency and usefulness in wireless sensor networks, the excessive costs associated with decoding computation and complexity still hinder its adoption into practical use. On the other hand, high-performance microprocessors with heterogeneous multi-cores would be used as processing nodes of the wireless sensor networks in the near future. To this end, this paper introduces an efficient network coding algorithm developed for the heterogenous multi-core processors.
