High-Level Synthesis Based VLSI Architectures for Video Coding
High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) is state-of-the-art video coding standard. Emerging applications like free-viewpoint video, 360degree video, augmented reality, 3D movies etc. require standardized extensions of HEVC. The standardized extensions of HEVC include HEVC Scalable Video Coding (SHVC), HEVC Multiview Video Coding (MV-HEVC), MV-HEVC+ Depth (3D-HEVC) and HEVC Screen Content Coding. 3D-HEVC is used for applications like view synthesis generation, free-viewpoint video. Coding and transmission of depth maps in 3D-HEVC is used for the virtual view synthesis by the algorithms like Depth Image Based Rendering (DIBR). As first step, we performed the profiling of the 3D-HEVC standard. Computational intensive parts of the standard are identified for the efficient hardware implementation. One of the computational intensive part of the 3D-HEVC, HEVC and H.264/AVC is the Interpolation Filtering used for Fractional Motion Estimation (FME). The hardware implementation of the interpolation filtering is carried out using High-Level Synthesis (HLS) tools. Xilinx Vivado Design Suite is used for the HLS implementation of the interpolation filters of HEVC and H.264/AVC. The complexity of the digital systems is greatly increased. High-Level Synthesis is the methodology which offers great benefits such as late architectural or functional changes without time consuming in rewriting of RTL-code, algorithms can be tested and evaluated early in the design cycle and development of accurate models against which the final hardware can be verified
Algorithm/Architecture Co-Exploration of Visual Computing: Overview and Future Perspectives
Concurrently exploring both algorithmic and architectural optimizations is a new design paradigm. This survey paper addresses the latest research and future perspectives on the simultaneous development of video coding, processing, and computing algorithms with emerging platforms that have multiple cores and reconfigurable architecture. As the algorithms in forthcoming visual systems become increasingly complex, many applications must have different profiles with different levels of performance. Hence, with expectations that the visual experience in the future will become continuously better, it is critical that advanced platforms provide higher performance, better flexibility, and lower power consumption. To achieve these goals, algorithm and architecture co-design is significant for characterizing the algorithmic complexity used to optimize targeted architecture. This paper shows that seamless weaving of the development of previously autonomous visual computing algorithms and multicore or reconfigurable architectures will unavoidably become the leading trend in the future of video technology
Highly parallel HEVC decoding for heterogeneous systems with CPU and GPU
The High Efficiency Video Coding HEVC standard provides a higher compression efficiency than other video coding standards but at the cost of an increased computational load, which makes hard to achieve real-time encoding/decoding for ultra high-resolution and high-quality video sequences. Graphics Processing Units GPU are known to provide massive processing capability for highly parallel and regular computing kernels, but not all HEVC decoding procedures are suited for GPU execution. Furthermore, if HEVC decoding is accelerated by GPUs, energy efficiency is another concern for heterogeneous CPU+GPU decoding. In this paper, a highly parallel HEVC decoder for heterogeneous CPU+GPU system is proposed. It exploits available parallelism in HEVC decoding on the CPU, GPU, and between the CPU and GPU devices simultaneously. On top of that, different workload balancing schemes can be selected according to the devoted CPU and GPU computing resources. Furthermore, an energy optimized solution is proposed by tuning GPU clock rates. Results show that the proposed decoder achieves better performance than the state-of-the-art CPU decoder, and the best performance among the workload balancing schemes depends on the available CPU and GPU computing resources. In particular, with an NVIDIA Titan X Maxwell GPU and an Intel Xeon E5-2699v3 CPU, the proposed decoder delivers 167 frames per second (fps) for Ultra HD 4K videos, when four CPU cores are used. Compared to the state-of-the-art CPU decoder using four CPU cores, the proposed decoder gains a speedup factor of . When decoding performance is bounded by the CPU, a system wise energy reduction up to 36% is achieved by using fixed (and lower) GPU clocks, compared to the default dynamic clock settings on the GPU.EC/H2020/688759/EU/Low-Power Parallel Computing on GPUs 2/LPGPU
Architectures for Adaptive Low-Power Embedded Multimedia Systems
This Ph.D. thesis describes novel hardware/software architectures for adaptive low-power embedded multimedia systems. Novel techniques for run-time adaptive energy management are proposed, such that both HW & SW adapt together to react to the unpredictable scenarios. A complete power-aware H.264 video encoder was developed. Comparison with state-of-the-art demonstrates significant energy savings while meeting the performance constraint and keeping the video quality degradation unnoticeable
Low-Power Embedded Design Solutions and Low-Latency On-Chip Interconnect Architecture for System-On-Chip Design
This dissertation presents three design solutions to support several key system-on-chip (SoC) issues to achieve low-power and high performance. These are: 1) joint source and channel decoding (JSCD) schemes for low-power SoCs used in portable multimedia systems, 2) efficient on-chip interconnect architecture for massive multimedia data streaming on multiprocessor SoCs (MPSoCs), and 3) data processing architecture for low-power SoCs in distributed sensor network (DSS) systems and its implementation.
The first part includes a low-power embedded low density parity check code (LDPC) - H.264 joint decoding architecture to lower the baseband energy consumption of a channel decoder using joint source decoding and dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS). A low-power multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and H.264 video joint detector/decoder design that minimizes energy for portable, wireless embedded systems is also designed.
In the second part, a link-level quality of service (QoS) scheme using unequal error protection (UEP) for low-power network-on-chip (NoC) and low latency on-chip network designs for MPSoCs is proposed. This part contains WaveSync, a low-latency focused network-on-chip architecture for globally-asynchronous locally-synchronous (GALS) designs and a simultaneous dual-path routing (SDPR) scheme utilizing path diversity present in typical mesh topology network-on-chips. SDPR is akin to having a higher link width but without the significant hardware overhead associated with simple bus width scaling.
The last part shows data processing unit designs for embedded SoCs. We propose a data processing and control logic design for a new radiation detection sensor system generating data at or above Peta-bits-per-second level. Implementation results show that the intended clock rate is achieved within the power target of less than 200mW. We also present a digital signal processing (DSP) accelerator supporting configurable MAC, FFT, FIR, and 3-D cross product operations for embedded SoCs. It consumes 12.35mW along with 0.167mm2 area at 333MHz

Low-power techniques for video decoding

The increasing popularity of video capture and playback on portable devices requires that the energy of the video processing be kept to a minimum. This work implements several architecture optimizations that reduce the system power of a high-definition video decoder. In order to decode high resolutions at low voltages and low frequencies, we employ techniques such as pipelining, unit parallelism, multiple cores, and multiple voltage/frequency domains. For example, a 3-core decoder can reduce the required clock frequency by 2.91 x, which enables a power reduction of 61% relative to a full-voltage single-core decoder. To reduce the total memory system power, several caching techniques are demonstrated that can dramatically reduce the off-chip memory bandwidth and power at the cost of increased chip area. A 123 kB data-forwarding cache can reduce the read bandwidth from external memory by 53%, which leads to 44% power savings in the memory reads. To demonstrate these low-power ideas, a H.264/AVC Baseline Level 3.2 decoder ASIC was fabricated in 65 nm CMOS and verified. It operates down to 0.7 V and has a measured power down to 1.8 mW when decoding a high definition 720p video at 30 frames per second, which is over an order of magnitude lower than previously published results.by Daniel Frederic Finchelstein.Ph.D
Algoritmo de estimação de movimento e sua arquitetura de hardware para HEVC

conferencing, video streaming, video broadcasting and video storage. In a
typical video coding standard, many algorithms are combined to compress a
video. However, one of those algorithms, the motion estimation is the most
complex task. Hence, it is necessary to implement this task in real time by
using appropriate VLSI architectures. This thesis proposes a new fast motion
estimation algorithm and its implementation in real time. The results show that
the proposed algorithm and its motion estimation hardware architecture out
performs the state of the art. The proposed architecture operates at a
maximum operating frequency of 241.6 MHz and is able to process
1080p@60Hz with all possible variables block sizes specified in HEVC
standard as well as with motion vector search range of up to ±64 pixels.A codificação de vídeo tem sido usada em aplicações tais como, vídeovigilância,
vídeo-conferência, video streaming e armazenamento de vídeo.
Numa norma de codificação de vídeo, diversos algoritmos são combinados
para comprimir o vídeo. Contudo, um desses algoritmos, a estimação de
movimento é a tarefa mais complexa. Por isso, é necessário implementar esta
tarefa em tempo real usando arquiteturas de hardware apropriadas. Esta tese
propõe um algoritmo de estimação de movimento rápido bem como a sua
implementação em tempo real. Os resultados mostram que o algoritmo e a
arquitetura de hardware propostos têm melhor desempenho que os existentes.
A arquitetura proposta opera a uma frequência máxima de 241.6 MHz e é
capaz de processar imagens de resolução 1080p@60Hz, com todos os
tamanhos de blocos especificados na norma HEVC, bem como um domínio de

Exploring Processor and Memory Architectures for Multimedia
Multimedia has become one of the cornerstones of our 21st century society and, when combined with mobility, has enabled a tremendous evolution of our society. However, joining these two concepts introduces many technical challenges. These range from having sufficient performance for handling multimedia content to having the battery stamina for acceptable mobile usage. When taking a projection of where we are heading, we see these issues becoming ever more challenging by increased mobility as well as advancements in multimedia content, such as introduction of stereoscopic 3D and augmented reality. The increased performance needs for handling multimedia come not only from an ongoing step-up in resolution going from QVGA (320x240) to Full HD (1920x1080) a 27x increase in less than half a decade. On top of this, there is also codec evolution (MPEG-2 to H.264 AVC) that adds to the computational load increase. To meet these performance challenges there has been processing and memory architecture advances (SIMD, out-of-order superscalarity, multicore processing and heterogeneous multilevel memories) in the mobile domain, in conjunction with ever increasing operating frequencies (200MHz to 2GHz) and on-chip memory sizes (128KB to 2-3MB). At the same time there is an increase in requirements for mobility, placing higher demands on battery-powered systems despite the steady increase in battery capacity (500 to 2000mAh). This leaves negative net result in-terms of battery capacity versus performance advances. In order to make optimal use of these architectural advances and to meet the power limitations in mobile systems, there is a need for taking an overall approach on how to best utilize these systems. The right trade-off between performance and power is crucial. On top of these constraints, the flexibility aspects of the system need to be addressed. All this makes it very important to reach the right architectural balance in the system. The first goal for this thesis is to examine multimedia applications and propose a flexible solution that can meet the architectural requirements in a mobile system. Secondly, propose an automated methodology of optimally mapping multimedia data and instructions to a heterogeneous multilevel memory subsystem. The proposed methodology uses constraint programming for solving a multidimensional optimization problem. Results from this work indicate that using today’s most advanced mobile processor technology together with a multi-level heterogeneous on-chip memory subsystem can meet the performance requirements for handling multimedia. By utilizing the automated optimal memory mapping method presented in this thesis lower total power consumption can be achieved, whilst performance for multimedia applications is improved, by employing enhanced memory management. This is achieved through reduced external accesses and better reuse of memory objects. This automatic method shows high accuracy, up to 90%, for predicting multimedia memory accesses for a given architecture
Enhancing a Neurosurgical Imaging System with a PC-based Video Processing Solution
This work presents a PC-based prototype video processing application developed to be used with a specific neurosurgical imaging device, the OPMI® PenteroTM operating microscope, in the Department of Neurosurgery of Helsinki University Central Hospital at Töölö, Helsinki. The motivation for implementing the software was the lack of some clinically important features in the imaging system provided by the microscope.
The imaging system is used as an online diagnostic aid during surgery. The microscope has two internal video cameras; one for regular white light imaging and one for near-infrared fluorescence imaging, used for indocyanine green videoangiography. The footage of the microscope’s current imaging mode is accessed via the composite auxiliary output of the device. The microscope also has an external high resolution white light video camera, accessed via a composite output of a separate video hub.
The PC was chosen as the video processing platform for its unparalleled combination of prototyping and high-throughput video processing capabilities. A thorough analysis of the platform and efficient video processing methods was conducted in the thesis and the results were used in the design of the imaging station. The features found feasible during the project were incorporated into a video processing application running on a GNU/Linux distribution Ubuntu. The clinical usefulness of the implemented features was ensured beforehand by consulting the neurosurgeons using the original system.
The most significant shortcomings of the original imaging system were mended in this work. The key features of the developed application include: live streaming, simultaneous streaming and recording, and playing back of upto two video streams. The playback mode provides full media player controls, with a frame-by-frame precision rewinding, in an intuitive and responsive interface. A single view and a side-by-side comparison mode are provided for the streams.
