In recent years, due to the unnecessary wastage of electrical energy in residential buildings, the requirement of energy optimization and user comfort has gained vital importance. In the literature, various techniques have been proposed addressing the energy optimization problem. The goal of each technique was to maintain a balance between user comfort and energy requirements such that the user can achieve the desired comfort level with the minimum amount of energy consumption. Researchers have addressed the issue with the help of different optimization algorithms and variations in the parameters to reduce energy consumption. To the best of our knowledge, this problem is not solved yet due to its challenging nature. The gap in the literature is due to the advancements in the technology and drawbacks of the optimization algorithms and the introduction of different new optimization algorithms. Further, many newly proposed optimization algorithms which have produced better accuracy on the benchmark instances but have not been applied yet for the optimization of energy consumption in smart homes. In this paper, we have carried out a detailed literature review of the techniques used for the optimization of energy consumption and scheduling in smart homes. The detailed discussion has been carried out on different factors contributing towards thermal comfort, visual comfort, and air quality comfort. We have also reviewed the fog and edge computing techniques used in smart homes

The Publisher's final version can be found by following the DOI link.Efficient rescheduling after a perturbation is an important concern of the railway industry. Extreme delays can result in large fines for the train company as well as dissatisfied customers. The problem is exacerbated by the fact that it is a dynamic one; more timetabled trains may be arriving as the perturbed trains are waiting to be rescheduled. The new trains may have different priorities to the existing trains and thus the rescheduling problem is a dynamic one that changes over time. The aim of this research is to apply a population-based ant colony optimisation algorithm to address this dynamic railway junction rescheduling problem using a simulator modelled on a real-world junction in the UK railway network. The results are promising: the algorithm performs well, particularly when the dynamic changes are of a high magnitude and frequency

    Get PDF
Seeking multiple optima simultaneously, which multimodal optimization aims at, has attracted increasing attention but remains challenging. Taking advantage of ant colony optimization algorithms in preserving high diversity, this paper intends to extend ant colony optimization algorithms to deal with multimodal optimization. First, combined with current niching methods, an adaptive multimodal continuous ant colony optimization algorithm is introduced. In this algorithm, an adaptive parameter adjustment is developed, which takes the difference among niches into consideration. Second, to accelerate convergence, a differential evolution mutation operator is alternatively utilized to build base vectors for ants to construct new solutions. Then, to enhance the exploitation, a local search scheme based on Gaussian distribution is self-adaptively performed around the seeds of niches. Together, the proposed algorithm affords a good balance between exploration and exploitation. Extensive experiments on 20 widely used benchmark multimodal functions are conducted to investigate the influence of each algorithmic component and results are compared with several state-of-the-art multimodal algorithms and winners of competitions on multimodal optimization. These comparisons demonstrate the competitive efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, especially in dealing with complex problems with high numbers of local optima

The optimization of daily operating room surgery schedule can be problematic because of many constraints, like to determine the starting time of different surgeries and allocating the required resources, including the availability of surgical teams for complete surgical procedures. Recently, Answer Set Programming (ASP) has been successfully employed for addressing and solving real-life scheduling and planning problems in the healthcare domain. In this paper we present an enhanced solution using ASP for scheduling operating rooms taking explicitly into consideration availability of surgical teams, that include a surgeon and an anesthetist in different specialties for the entire duration of the surgery. We tested our solution on different benchmarks with realistic parameters for schedule’s length up to the target 5-days planning. The results of our experiments show that ASP is a suitable methodology for solving also such enhanced problem

The residential load sector plays a vital role in terms of its impact on overall power balance, stability, and efficient power management. However, the load dynamics of the energy demand of residential users are always nonlinear, uncontrollable, and inelastic concerning power grid regulation and management. The integration of distributed generations (DGs) and advancement of information and communication technology (ICT) even though handles the related issues and challenges up to some extent, till the flexibility, energy management and scheduling with better planning are necessary for the residential sector to achieve better grid stability and efficiency. To address these issues, it is indispensable to analyze the demand-side management (DSM) for the complex residential sector considering various operational constraints, objectives, identifying various factors that affect better planning, scheduling, and management, to project the key features of various approaches and possible future research directions. This review has been done based on the related literature to focus on modeling, optimization methods, major objectives, system operation constraints, dominating factors impacting overall system operation, and possible solutions enhancing residential DSM operation. Gaps in future research and possible prospects have been discussed briefly to give a proper insight into the current implementation of DSM. This extensive review of residential DSM will help all the researchers in this area to innovate better energy management strategies and reduce the effect of system uncertainties, variations, and constraints

Application of Artificial Intelligence declarative methods for Solving Operating Room Scheduling problems in Hospital Environments

Digital health is a relatively new but already important field in which digitalization meets the need to automatically and efficiently solve problems in healthcare to improve the quality of life for patients. The need to efficiently solve some of these problems has become even more pressing due to the Covid-19 pandemic that significantly increased stress and demand on hospitals. Hospitals have long waiting lists, surgery cancellations, and even worse, resource overload—issues that negatively impact the level of patient satisfaction and the quality of care provided. Within every hospital, operating rooms (ORs) are an important unit. The Operating Room Scheduling (ORS) problem is the task of assigning patients to operating rooms, taking into account different specialties, lengths and priority scores of each planned surgery, operating room session durations, and the availability of beds for the entire length of stay both in the Intensive Care Unit and in the wards. A proper solution to the ORS problem is of primary importance for the quality of healthcare service and the satisfaction of patients in hospital environments. In this thesis, we provide several contributions to the ORS problem. We first present a solution to the problem based on Knowledge Representation and Reasoning via modeling and solving approaches using Answer Set Programming (ASP). This first basic solution builds on a previous solution but takes into account explicitly beds and ICU units because in the pandemic we understood how important and limiting they were. Moreover, we also present an ASP solution for the rescheduling problem, i.e., when the off-line schedule cannot be completed for some reasons, and a further extension where surgical teams are also considered. Another technical contribution is a second solution for the basic ORS problem with beds and an ICU unit, whose modeling departs from the guidelines previously used and shows efficiency improvements. Finally, we introduce a web framework for managing ORS problems via ASP that allows a user to insert the main parameters of the problem, solve a specific instance, and show results graphically in real time

Energy Aware Resource Allocation for Clouds Using Two Level Ant Colony Optimization

    Get PDF
In cloud environment resources are dynamically allocated, adjusted, and deallocated. When to allocate and how many resources to allocate is a challenging task. Resources allocated optimally and at the right time not only improve the utilization of resources but also increase energy efficiency, provider's profit and customers' satisfaction. This paper presents ant colony optimization (ACO) based energy aware solution for resource allocation problem. The proposed energy aware resource allocation (EARA) methodology strives to optimize allocation of resources in order to improve energy efficiency of the cloud infrastructure while satisfying quality of service (QoS) requirements of the end users. Resources are allocated to jobs according to their QoS requirements. For energy efficient and QoS aware allocation of resources, EARA uses ACO at two levels. First level ACO allocates Virtual Machines (VMs) resources to jobs whereas second level ACO allocates Physical Machines (PMs) resources to VMs. Server consolidation and dynamic performance scaling of PMs are employed to conserve energy. The proposed methodology is implemented in CloudSim and the results are compared with existing popular resource allocation methods. Simulation results demonstrate that EARA achieves desired QoS and superior energy gains through better utilization of resources. EARA outperforms major existing resource allocation methods and achieves up to 10.56 % saving in energy consumption
