    Millimeter-wave Communication and Radar Sensing — Opportunities, Challenges, and Solutions

    With the development of communication and radar sensing technology, people are able to seek for a more convenient life and better experiences. The fifth generation (5G) mobile network provides high speed communication and internet services with a data rate up to several gigabit per second (Gbps). In addition, 5G offers great opportunities of emerging applications, for example, manufacture automation with the help of precise wireless sensing. For future communication and sensing systems, increasing capacity and accuracy is desired, which can be realized at millimeter-wave spectrum from 30 GHz to 300 GHz with several tens of GHz available bandwidth. Wavelength reduces at higher frequency, this implies more compact transceivers and antennas, and high sensing accuracy and imaging resolution. Challenges arise with these application opportunities when it comes to realizing prototype or demonstrators in practice. This thesis proposes some of the solutions addressing such challenges in a laboratory environment.High data rate millimeter-wave transmission experiments have been demonstrated with the help of advanced instrumentations. These demonstrations show the potential of transceiver chipsets. On the other hand, the real-time communication demonstrations are limited to either low modulation order signals or low symbol rate transmissions. The reason for that is the lack of commercially available high-speed analog-to-digital converters (ADCs); therefore, conventional digital synchronization methods are difficult to implement in real-time systems at very high data rates. In this thesis, two synchronous baseband receivers are proposed with carrier recovery subsystems which only require low-speed ADCs [A][B].Besides synchronization, high-frequency signal generation is also a challenge in millimeter-wave communications. The frequency divider is a critical component of a millimeter-wave frequency synthesizer. Having both wide locking range and high working frequencies is a challenge. In this thesis, a tunable delay gated ring oscillator topology is proposed for dual-mode operation and bandwidth extension [C]. Millimeter-wave radar offers advantages for high accuracy sensing. Traditional millimeter-wave radar with frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW), or continuous-wave (CW), all have their disadvantages. Typically, the FMCW radar cannot share the spectrum with other FMCW radars.\ua0 With limited bandwidth, the number of FMCW radars that could coexist in the same area is limited. CW radars have a limited ambiguous distance of a wavelength. In this thesis, a phase-modulated radar with micrometer accuracy is presented [D]. It is applicable in a multi-radar scenario without occupying more bandwidth, and its ambiguous distance is also much larger than the CW radar. Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) radar has similar properties. However, its traditional fast calculation method, fast Fourier transform (FFT), limits its measurement accuracy.     Low phase noise 2 GHz Fractional-N CMOS synthesizer IC

    Low noise low division 2 GHz RF synthesizer integrated circuits (ICs) are conventionally implemented in some form of HBT process such as SiGe or GaAs. The research in this dissertation differs from convention, with the aim of implementing a synthesizer IC in a more convenient, low-cost Si-based CMOS process. A collection of techniques to push towards the noise and frequency limits of CMOS processes, and possibly other IC processes, is then one of the research outcomes. In a synthesizer low N-divider ratios are important, as high division ratios would amplify in-band phase noise. The design methods deployed as part of this research achieve low division ratios (4 ≤ N ≤ 33) and a high phase comparison frequency (>100 MHz). The synthesizer IC employs a first-order fractional-N topology to achieve increased frequency tuning resolution. The primary N-divider was implemented utilising current mode logic (CML) and the fractional accumulator utilising conventional CMOS. Both a conventional CMOS phase frequency detector (PFD) and a CML PFD were implemented for benchmarking purposes. A custom-built 4.4 GHz synthesizer circuit employing the IC was used to validate the research. In the 4.4 GHz synthesizer circuit, the prototype IC achieved a measured in-band phase noise plateau of L( f ) = -113 dBc/Hz at a 100 kHz frequency offset, which equates to a figure of merit (FOM) of -225 dBc/Hz. The FOM compares well with existing, but expensive, SiGe and GaAs HBT processes. Total IC power dissipation was 710 mW, which is considerably less than commercially available GaAs designs.     Design of Integrated Microwave Frequency Synthesizer-Based Dielectric Sensor Systems

    Dielectric sensors have several biomedical and industrial applications where they are used to characterize the permittivity of materials versus frequency. Characterization at RF/microwave frequencies is particularly useful since many chemicals/bio-materials show significant changes in this band. The potential system cost and size reduction possible motivates the development of fully integrated dielectric sensor systems on CMOS with high sensitivity for point-of-care medical diagnosis platforms and for lab-on-chip industrial sensors. Voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO)-based dielectric sensors embed the sensing capacitor within the excitation VCO to allow for self-sustained measurement of the material under test (MUT)-induced frequency shift with simple and precise readout circuits. Despite their advantages, VCO-based sensors have several design challenges. First, low frequency noise and environmental variations limit their sensitivity. Also, these systems usually place the VCO in a frequency synthesizer to control the sample excitation frequency which reduces the resolution of the read-out circuitry. Finally, conventional VCO-based systems utilizing LC oscillators have limited tuning range, and can only characterize the real part of the permittivity of the MUT. This dissertation proposes several ideas to: 1) improve the sensitivity of the system by filtering the low frequency noise and enhance the resolution of the read-out circuitry, 2) improve the tuning range, and 3) enable complex dielectric characterization in VCO/synthesizer-based dielectric spectroscopy systems. The first prototype proposes a highly-sensitive CMOS-based sensing system for permittivity detection and mixture characterization of organic chemicals at microwave frequencies. The system determines permittivity by measuring the frequency difference between two VCOs; a sensor oscillator with an operating frequency that shifts with the change in tank capacitance due to exposure to the MUT and a reference oscillator insensitive to the MUT. This relative measurement approach improves sensor accuracy by tracking frequency drifts due to environmental variations. Embedding the sensor and reference VCOs in a fractional-N phase-locked loop (PLL) frequency synthesizer enables material characterization at a precise frequency and provides an efficient material-induced frequency shift read-out mechanism with a low-complexity bang-bang control loop that adjusts a fractional frequency divider. The majority of the PLL-based sensor system, except for an external fractional frequency divider, is implemented with a 90 nm CMOS prototype that consumes 22 mW when characterizing material near 10 GHz. Material-induced frequency shifts are detected at an accuracy level of 15 ppmrms and binary mixture characterization of organic chemicals yield maximum errors in permittivity of <1.5%. The second prototype proposes a fully-integrated sensing system for wideband complex dielectric detection of MUT. The system utilizes a ring oscillator-based PLL for wide tuning range and precise control of the sensor's excitation frequency. Characterization of both real and imaginary MUT permittivity is achieved by measuring the frequency difference between two VCOs: a sensing oscillator, with a frequency that varies with MUT-induced changes in capacitance and conductance of a delay-cells' sensing capacitor loads, and a MUT-insensitive reference oscillator that is controlled by an amplitude-locked loop (ALL). The fully integrated system is fabricated in 0.18 μm CMOS, and occupies 6.25 mm2 area. When tested with common organic chemicals (ε`r < 30), the system operates between 0.7-6 GHz and achieves 3.7% maximum permittivity error. Characterization is also performed with higher ε`r water-methanol mixtures and phosphate buffered saline (PBS) solutions, with 5.4% maximum permittivity error achieved over a 0.7-4.77 GHz range

    An Energy-Efficient Reconfigurable Mobile Memory Interface for Computing Systems

    The critical need for higher power efficiency and bandwidth transceiver design has significantly increased as mobile devices, such as smart phones, laptops, tablets, and ultra-portable personal digital assistants continue to be constructed using heterogeneous intellectual properties such as central processing units (CPUs), graphics processing units (GPUs), digital signal processors, dynamic random-access memories (DRAMs), sensors, and graphics/image processing units and to have enhanced graphic computing and video processing capabilities. However, the current mobile interface technologies which support CPU to memory communication (e.g. baseband-only signaling) have critical limitations, particularly super-linear energy consumption, limited bandwidth, and non-reconfigurable data access. As a consequence, there is a critical need to improve both energy efficiency and bandwidth for future mobile devices.;The primary goal of this study is to design an energy-efficient reconfigurable mobile memory interface for mobile computing systems in order to dramatically enhance the circuit and system bandwidth and power efficiency. The proposed energy efficient mobile memory interface which utilizes an advanced base-band (BB) signaling and a RF-band signaling is capable of simultaneous bi-directional communication and reconfigurable data access. It also increases power efficiency and bandwidth between mobile CPUs and memory subsystems on a single-ended shared transmission line. Moreover, due to multiple data communication on a single-ended shared transmission line, the number of transmission lines between mobile CPU and memories is considerably reduced, resulting in significant technological innovations, (e.g. more compact devices and low cost packaging to mobile communication interface) and establishing the principles and feasibility of technologies for future mobile system applications. The operation and performance of the proposed transceiver are analyzed and its circuit implementation is discussed in details. A chip prototype of the transceiver was implemented in a 65nm CMOS process technology. In the measurement, the transceiver exhibits higher aggregate data throughput and better energy efficiency compared to prior works

    A Low-Power BFSK/OOK Transmitter for Wireless Sensors

    In recent years, significant improvements in semiconductor technology have allowed consistent development of wireless chipsets in terms of functionality and form factor. This has opened up a broad range of applications for implantable wireless sensors and telemetry devices in multiple categories, such as military, industrial, and medical uses. The nature of these applications often requires the wireless sensors to be low-weight and energy-efficient to achieve long battery life. Among the various functions of these sensors, the communication block, used to transmit the gathered data, is typically the most power-hungry block. In typical wireless sensor networks, transmission range is below 10 meters and required radiated power is below 1 milliwatt. In such cases, power consumption of the frequency-synthesis circuits prior to the power amplifier of the transmitter becomes significant. Reducing this power consumption is currently the focus of various research endeavors. A popular method of achieving this goal is using a direct-modulation transmitter where the generated carrier is directly modulated with baseband data using simple modulation schemes. Among the different variations of direct-modulation transmitters, transmitters using unlocked digitally-controlled oscillators and transmitters with injection or resonator-locked oscillators are widely investigated because of their simple structure. These transmitters can achieve low-power and stable operation either with the help of recalibration or by sacrificing tuning capability. In contrast, phase-locked-loop-based (PLL) transmitters are less researched. The PLL uses a feedback loop to lock the carrier to a reference frequency with a programmable ratio and thus achieves good frequency stability and convenient tunability. This work focuses on PLL-based transmitters. The initial goal of this work is to reduce the power consumption of the oscillator and frequency divider, the two most power-consuming blocks in a PLL. Novel topologies for these two blocks are proposed which achieve ultra-low-power operation. Along with measured performance, mathematical analysis to derive rule-of-thumb design approaches are presented. Finally, the full transmitter is implemented using these blocks in a 130 nanometer CMOS process and is successfully tested for low-power operation

    Oscillator Architectures and Enhanced Frequency Synthesizer

    A voltage controlled oscillator (VCO), that generates a periodic signal whose frequency is tuned by a voltage, is a key building block in any integrated circuit systems. A sine wave oscillator can be used for a built-in self testing where high linearity is required. A bandpass filter (BPF) based oscillator is a preferred solution, and high quality factor (Q-factor) is needed to improve the linearity. However, a stringent linearity specification may require very high Q-factor, not practical to implement. To address this problem, a frequency harmonic shaping technique is proposed. It utilizes a finite impulse response filter improving the linearity by rejecting certain harmonics. A prototype SC BPF oscillator with an oscillating frequency of 10 MHz is designed and measurement results show that linearity is improved by 20 dB over a conventional oscillator. In radio frequency area, preferred oscillator structures are an LC oscillator and a ring oscillator. An LC oscillator exhibits good phase noise but an expensive cost of an inductor is disadvantageous. A ring oscillator can be built in standard CMOS process, but suffers due to a poor phase noise and is sensitive to supply noise. A RC BPF oscillator is proposed to compromise the above difficulties. A RC BPF oscillator at 2.5 GHz is designed and measured performance is better than ring oscillators when compared using a figure of merit. In particular, the frequency tuning range of the proposed oscillator is superior to the ring oscillator. VCO is normally incorporated with a frequency synthesizer (FS) for an accurate frequency control. In an integer-N FS, reference spur is one of the design concerns in communication systems since it degrades a signal to noise ratio. Reference spurs can be rejected more by either the lower loop bandwidth or the higher loop filter. But the former increases a settling time and the latter decreases phase margin. An adaptive lowpass filtering technique is proposed. The loop filter order is adaptively increased after the loop is locked. A 5.8 GHz integer-N FS is designed and measurement results show that reference spur rejection is improved by 20 dB over a conventional FS without degrading the settling time. A new pulse interleaving technique is proposed and several design modifications are suggested as a future work

    Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) have great potential in realizing chip-scale integrated devices for energy-efficient analog spectrum processing. This thesis presents the development of a new class of MEMS resonators and filters integrated with CMOS readout circuits for RF front-ends and integrated timing applications. Circuit-level innovations coupled with new device designs allowed for realizing integrated systems with improved performance compared to standalone devices reported in the literature. The thesis is comprised of two major parts. The first part of the thesis is focused on developing integrated MEMS timing devices. Fused silica is explored as a new structural material for fabricating high-Q vibrating micromechanical resonators. A piezoelectric-on-silica MEMS resonator is demonstrated with a high Q of more than 20,000 and good electromechanical coupling. A low phase noise CMOS reference oscillator is implemented using the MEMS resonator as a mechanical frequency reference. Temperature-stable operation of the MEMS oscillator is realized by ovenizing the platform using an integrated heater. In an alternative scheme, the intrinsic temperature sensitivity of MEMS resonators is utilized for temperature sensing, and active compensation for MEMS oscillators is realized by oven-control using a phase-locked loop (PLL). CMOS circuits are implemented for realizing the PLL-based low-power oven-control system. The active compensation technique realizes a MEMS oscillator with an overall frequency drift within +/- 4 ppm across -40 to 70 °C, without the need for calibration. The CMOS PLL circuits for oven-control is demonstrated with near-zero phase noise invasion on the MEMS oscillators. The properties of PLL-based compensation for realizing ultra-stable MEMS frequency references are studied. In the second part of the thesis, RF MEMS devices, including tunable capacitors, high-Q inductors, and ohmic switches, are fabricated using a surface micromachined integrated passive device (IPD) process. Using this process, an integrated ultra-wideband (UWB) filter has been demonstrated, showing low loss and a small form factor. To further address the issue of narrow in-band interferences in UWB communication, a tunable MEMS bandstop filter is integrated with the bandpass filter with more than an octave frequency tuning range.     ENABLING HARDWARE TECHNOLOGIES FOR AUTONOMY IN TINY ROBOTS: CONTROL, INTEGRATION, ACTUATION

    The last two decades have seen many exciting examples of tiny robots from a few cm3 to less than one cm3. Although individually limited, a large group of these robots has the potential to work cooperatively and accomplish complex tasks. Two examples from nature that exhibit this type of cooperation are ant and bee colonies. They have the potential to assist in applications like search and rescue, military scouting, infrastructure and equipment monitoring, nano-manufacture, and possibly medicine. Most of these applications require the high level of autonomy that has been demonstrated by large robotic platforms, such as the iRobot and Honda ASIMO. However, when robot size shrinks down, current approaches to achieve the necessary functions are no longer valid. This work focused on challenges associated with the electronics and fabrication. We addressed three major technical hurdles inherent to current approaches: 1) difficulty of compact integration; 2) need for real-time and power-efficient computations; 3) unavailability of commercial tiny actuators and motion mechanisms. The aim of this work was to provide enabling hardware technologies to achieve autonomy in tiny robots. We proposed a decentralized application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) where each component is responsible for its own operation and autonomy to the greatest extent possible. The ASIC consists of electronics modules for the fundamental functions required to fulfill the desired autonomy: actuation, control, power supply, and sensing. The actuators and mechanisms could potentially be post-fabricated on the ASIC directly. This design makes for a modular architecture. The following components were shown to work in physical implementations or simulations: 1) a tunable motion controller for ultralow frequency actuation; 2) a nonvolatile memory and programming circuit to achieve automatic and one-time programming; 3) a high-voltage circuit with the highest reported breakdown voltage in standard 0.5 μm CMOS; 4) thermal actuators fabricated using CMOS compatible process; 5) a low-power mixed-signal computational architecture for robotic dynamics simulator; 6) a frequency-boost technique to achieve low jitter in ring oscillators. These contributions will be generally enabling for other systems with strict size and power constraints such as wireless sensor nodes

    Circuit Design Techniques For Wideband Phased Arrays

Two different solutions, one in frequency and one in time, have been proposed to minimize beam squinting in phased arrays. Additionally, a differential current reuse frequency doubler for area and power savings has been proposed. Silicon measurement results are provided for the frequency domain solution (IBM 65nm RF CMOS), injection locked oscillator model verification (IBM 130nm RF-CMOS) and frequency doubler (IBM 65nm RF CMOS), while post extraction simulation results are provided for the time domain phased array solution (the chip is currently under fabrication, TSMC 65nm RF CMOS). In the frequency domain solution, a 4-point passive analog FFT based frequency tunable filter is used to channelize an incoming wideband signal into multiple narrowband signals, which are then processed through independent phase shifters. A two channel prototype has been developed at 8GHz RF frequency. Three discrete phase shifts (0 & +/- 90 degrees) are implemented through differential I-Q swapping with appropriate polarity. A minimum null-depth of 19dB while a maximum null-depth of 27dB is measured. In the time domain solution, a discrete time approach is undertaken with signals getting sampled in order of their arrival times. A two-channel prototype for a 2GHz instantaneous RF bandwidth (7GHz-9GHz) has been designed. A QVCO generates quadrature LO signals at 8GHz which are phase shifted through a 5-bit (2 extra bits from differential I-Q swapping with appropriate polarity) cartesian combiner. Baseband sampling clocks are generated from phase shifted LOs through a CMOS divide by 4 with independent resets. The design achieves an average time delay of 4.53ps with 31.5mW of power consumption (per channel, buffers excluded). An injection locked oscillator has been analyzed in s-domain using Paciorek's time domain transient equations. The simplified analysis leads to a phase noise model identical to that of a type-I PLL. The model is equally applicable to injection locked dividers and multipliers and has been extended to cover all injection locking scenarios. The model has been verified against a discrete 57MHz Colpitt's ILO, a 6.5GHz ILFD and a 24GHz ILFM with excellent matching between the model and measurements. Additionally, a differential current reuse frequency doubler, for frequency outputs between 7GHz to 14GHz, design has been developed to reduce passive area and dc power dissipation. A 3-bit capacitive tuning along with a tail current source is used to better conversion efficiency. The doubler shows FOMT_{T} values between 191dBc/Hz to 209dBc/Hz when driven by a 0.7GHz to 5.8GHz wide tuning VCO with a phase noise that ranges from -114dBc/Hz to -112dBc/Hz over the same bandwidth
