    Apparatus and method for determining the position of a radiant energy source

    The position of a terrestrial RF source is determined from a geostationary, synchronous satellite by scanning the beam of a narrow beam width antenna in first and second orthogonal directions over a region including the source. The peak level of energy transduced by the antenna in each of the scanning directions is detected and correlated with the scanning position of the beam by feeding the output of a detector responsive to the transduced signal to an indicator of an X-Y recorder. The X and Y axes of the recorder are scanned in synchronism with the beam being respectively scanned in the first and second directions to form X and Y traces on which are indicated the detected peak position in each of the scanning directions. The source position is determined from an intersection of lines drawn parallel to the X and Y axes and including the detected peak position of each trace

    Systems and methods for determining radio frequency interference

    The presence, frequency and amplitude of radio frequency interference superimposed on communication links originating from a terrestrial region and including a relay in a geostationary spacecraft are determined by pointing a narrow beam antenna on the satellite at the terrestrial region. The level of noise radiated from the region to the antenna is measured at a terrestrial station that is usually remote from the region. Calibrating radio signals having a plurality of predetermined EIRP's (Effective Isotropic Radiated Power) and frequencies in the spectrum are transmitted from the region through the spacecraft narrow beam antenna back to the station. At the station, the levels of the received calibrating signals are separately measured for each of the frequency bands and EIRP's

    Spatial, Spectral, and Perceptual Nonlinear Noise Reduction for Hands-free Microphones in a Car

    Speech enhancement in an automobile is a challenging problem because interference can come from engine noise, fans, music, wind, road noise, reverberation, echo, and passengers engaging in other conversations. Hands-free microphones make the situation worse because the strength of the desired speech signal reduces with increased distance between the microphone and talker. Automobile safety is improved when the driver can use a hands-free interface to phones and other devices instead of taking his eyes off the road. The demand for high quality hands-free communication in the automobile requires the introduction of more powerful algorithms. This thesis shows that a unique combination of five algorithms can achieve superior speech enhancement for a hands-free system when compared to beamforming or spectral subtraction alone. Several different designs were analyzed and tested before converging on the configuration that achieved the best results. Beamforming, voice activity detection, spectral subtraction, perceptual nonlinear weighting, and talker isolation via pitch tracking all work together in a complementary iterative manner to create a speech enhancement system capable of significantly enhancing real world speech signals. The following conclusions are supported by the simulation results using data recorded in a car and are in strong agreement with theory. Adaptive beamforming, like the Generalized Side-lobe Canceller (GSC), can be effectively used if the filters only adapt during silent data frames because too much of the desired speech is cancelled otherwise. Spectral subtraction removes stationary noise while perceptual weighting prevents the introduction of offensive audible noise artifacts. Talker isolation via pitch tracking can perform better when used after beamforming and spectral subtraction because of the higher accuracy obtained after initial noise removal. Iterating the algorithm once increases the accuracy of the Voice Activity Detection (VAD), which improves the overall performance of the algorithm. Placing the microphone(s) on the ceiling above the head and slightly forward of the desired talker appears to be the best location in an automobile based on the experiments performed in this thesis. Objective speech quality measures show that the algorithm removes a majority of the stationary noise in a hands-free environment of an automobile with relatively minimal speech distortion

    Auditory Displays and Assistive Technologies: the use of head movements by visually impaired individuals and their implementation in binaural interfaces

    Visually impaired people rely upon audition for a variety of purposes, among these are the use of sound to identify the position of objects in their surrounding environment. This is limited not just to localising sound emitting objects, but also obstacles and environmental boundaries, thanks to their ability to extract information from reverberation and sound reflections- all of which can contribute to effective and safe navigation, as well as serving a function in certain assistive technologies thanks to the advent of binaural auditory virtual reality. It is known that head movements in the presence of sound elicit changes in the acoustical signals which arrive at each ear, and these changes can improve common auditory localisation problems in headphone-based auditory virtual reality, such as front-to-back reversals. The goal of the work presented here is to investigate whether the visually impaired naturally engage head movement to facilitate auditory perception and to what extent it may be applicable to the design of virtual auditory assistive technology. Three novel experiments are presented; a field study of head movement behaviour during navigation, a questionnaire assessing the self-reported use of head movement in auditory perception by visually impaired individuals (each comparing visually impaired and sighted participants) and an acoustical analysis of inter-aural differences and cross- correlations as a function of head angle and sound source distance. It is found that visually impaired people self-report using head movement for auditory distance perception. This is supported by head movements observed during the field study, whilst the acoustical analysis showed that interaural correlations for sound sources within 5m of the listener were reduced as head angle or distance to sound source were increased, and that interaural differences and correlations in reflected sound were generally lower than that of direct sound. Subsequently, relevant guidelines for designers of assistive auditory virtual reality are proposed

    A Computational Analysis of Hypersonic Store Separations

    Many current hypersonic vehicles involve shrouds, fairings, boosters, or ejectable payloads separating during flight. It is imperative that they do not strike each other after separation as this typically results in damage or loss of vehicle. This requires a detailed understanding of the flow features involved such as shock waves, expansion waves, shock reflections, and shock wave boundary layer interactions influencing the vehicles\u27 attitude and trajectory. Experimental and flight tests of these scenarios are costly and need massive infrastructure which require difficult measurement techniques to characterize the flow field. Alternatively, numerical simulations can provide accurate, low-cost, and efficient predictions of hypersonic separations. This study looks at the scenarios of a smaller vehicle or store in the flow field of a larger vehicle. Computational fluid dynamics simulations are performed on a 7∘7^\circ cone crossing an oblique shock wave at Mach 7 using NASA\u27s OVERFLOW 2.3e Reynolds-averaged Navier Stokes solver. Trajectory and attitude is tracked along with capturing flow features and their imposed forces. The vehicle\u27s dynamics when passing through a shock appears to predominantly the result of differential flow incidence angles causing a strong shock leading to a large pressure increase over a fraction of the vehicle which influences pitch. The vehicle appears to follow conventional longitudinal stability theory and becomes more stable during the interaction with the center of pressure moving aft and the peak pitching moment happening when the shock passes through the center of gravity if allowed to continue through the body. Complex shock wave boundary layer interactions are seen which could complicate specific separation scenarios. Nonphysical anomalies are seen in the flow field which are theorized to be the result of OVERFLOW\u27s implicit solution algorithm but are shown to have little influence on results. Likewise, the applied forces and moments along with center of pressure in this scenario are shown to be unaltered by hybrid Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes and Large eddy simulations in the form of delayed detached eddy simulation

    Detection and handling of overlapping speech for speaker diarization

    For the last several years, speaker diarization has been attracting substantial research attention as one of the spoken language technologies applied for the improvement, or enrichment, of recording transcriptions. Recordings of meetings, compared to other domains, exhibit an increased complexity due to the spontaneity of speech, reverberation effects, and also due to the presence of overlapping speech. Overlapping speech refers to situations when two or more speakers are speaking simultaneously. In meeting data, a substantial portion of errors of the conventional speaker diarization systems can be ascribed to speaker overlaps, since usually only one speaker label is assigned per segment. Furthermore, simultaneous speech included in training data can eventually lead to corrupt single-speaker models and thus to a worse segmentation. This thesis concerns the detection of overlapping speech segments and its further application for the improvement of speaker diarization performance. We propose the use of three spatial cross-correlationbased parameters for overlap detection on distant microphone channel data. Spatial features from different microphone pairs are fused by means of principal component analysis, linear discriminant analysis, or by a multi-layer perceptron. In addition, we also investigate the possibility of employing longterm prosodic information. The most suitable subset from a set of candidate prosodic features is determined in two steps. Firstly, a ranking according to mRMR criterion is obtained, and then, a standard hill-climbing wrapper approach is applied in order to determine the optimal number of features. The novel spatial as well as prosodic parameters are used in combination with spectral-based features suggested previously in the literature. In experiments conducted on AMI meeting data, we show that the newly proposed features do contribute to the detection of overlapping speech, especially on data originating from a single recording site. In speaker diarization, for segments including detected speaker overlap, a second speaker label is picked, and such segments are also discarded from the model training. The proposed overlap labeling technique is integrated in Viterbi decoding, a part of the diarization algorithm. During the system development it was discovered that it is favorable to do an independent optimization of overlap exclusion and labeling with respect to the overlap detection system. We report improvements over the baseline diarization system on both single- and multi-site AMI data. Preliminary experiments with NIST RT data show DER improvement on the RT ¿09 meeting recordings as well. The addition of beamforming and TDOA feature stream into the baseline diarization system, which was aimed at improving the clustering process, results in a bit higher effectiveness of the overlap labeling algorithm. A more detailed analysis on the overlap exclusion behavior reveals big improvement contrasts between individual meeting recordings as well as between various settings of the overlap detection operation point. However, a high performance variability across different recordings is also typical of the baseline diarization system, without any overlap handling
