Real-time performance monitoring of tuned mass damper system for a 183 m reinforced concrete chimney

A 183 m reinforced concrete chimney for a coal-fired power station was instrumented in the latter part of its life during the construction of a replacement chimney. Because of concerns about large-amplitude response induced by interference effects from the new chimney in the prevailing upwind direction, a response monitoring system was installed, quickly followed by a tuned mass damper (TMD) system. As well as providing live display of the chimney response, the monitoring system was also used to check the functioning of the TMD. The monitoring system featured a direct implementation of the stochastic subspace identification procedure in the 'virtual instrument' controlling the system, so that modal damping values for the system were displayed automatically, in real-time. The system thus provided an immediate visual indication of increased damping levels during strong winds, showing the correct functioning of the TMD. The paper describes the chimney, the monitoring system and its installation, the data processing and system identification procedure, together with performance data before, during and after installation of the TMD. Ground vibration tests of a high fidelity truss for verification of on orbit damage location techniques

    Get PDF
This paper describes a series of modal tests that were performed on a cantilevered truss structure. The goal of the tests was to assemble a large database of high quality modal test data for use in verification of proposed methods for on orbit model verification and damage detection in flexible truss structures. A description of the hardware is provided along with details of the experimental setup and procedures for 16 damage cases. Results from selected cases are presented and discussed. Differences between ground vibration testing and on orbit modal testing are also described

Identification of inertia force between cantilever beam and moving mass based on recursive inverse method

    Get PDF
In this paper, an inverse method which formed by two parts: Kalman filter and recursive least-square algorithm is applied to solve an identification problem of the inertia force between a cantilever beam and a moving mass. Based on the basic Euler-Bernoulli beam model, the discretized state space model of the cantilever beam and moving mass system, which transform from the differential equations about the inertia force and modal responses of the cantilever beam, is established. Both the recursive inverse method and the traditional least square method are adapted to the none-noise and noise simulation deflection data which are obtained by the finite element method. The results show that although both two algorithms can bring good results in dealing with the none-noise data, the inverse method has stronger ability to estimate the inertia force in the strong-noise environment, where the traditional least square method fails. Finally, a field experiment is conducted and the identification results show that the recursive inverse method can be adapted to estimate the inertia force between the cantilever and moving mass successfully

Wavelet-like analysis in the frequency-damping domain for modal parameters identification

    Get PDF
Modal analysis and parametric model identification play a fundamental role in many fields, especially for the optimization and vibration control of civil structures and complex mechanical systems. In the last decades these techniques have been frequently applied for the development of innovative cutting tools and CNC machine tools. Although several methodologies are available in literature for parametric model identification, there is still a lack of an effective and robust algorithm. In this paper a new algorithm for automatic identification of a parametric model of a linear dynamic Single Input Single Output system with Multiple Degrees of Freedom is presented. Some recent approaches perform the Wavelet decomposition of the Impulse Response in the time-frequency domain. Here a Wavelet-like decomposition of the Frequency Response in the frequency-damping domain is introduced for vibration modes recognition. Afterwards, advanced statistical approaches are applied for vibration modes selection and model generation. The method was successfully tested on a complicated frequency response characterized by several vibration modes, which was obtained from experimental modal analysis performed on a circular saw blade
