    NEW BACTERIA FORAGING AND PARTICLE SWARM HYBRID ALGORITHM FOR MEDICAL IMAGE COMPRESSION

    For perfect diagnosis of brain tumour, it is necessary to identify tumour affected regions in the brain in MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) images effectively and compression of these images for transmission over a communication channel at high speed with better visual quality to the experts. An attempt has been made in this paper for identifying tumour regions with optimal thresholds which are optimized with the proposed Hybrid Bacteria Foraging Optimization Algorithm (BFOA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) named (HBFOA-PSO) by maximizing the Renyi’s entropy and Kapur’s entropy. BFOA may be trapped into local optimal problem and delay in execution time (convergence time) because of random chemo taxis steps in the procedure of algorithm and to get global solution, a theory of swarming is commenced in the structure of HBFOA-PSO. Effectiveness of this HBFOA-PSO is evaluated on six different MRI images of brain with tumours and proved to be better in Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR), Mean Square Error (MSE) and Fitness Function

    Adaptive firefly algorithm for hierarchical text clustering

    Text clustering is essentially used by search engines to increase the recall and precision in information retrieval. As search engine operates on Internet content that is constantly being updated, there is a need for a clustering algorithm that offers automatic grouping of items without prior knowledge on the collection. Existing clustering methods have problems in determining optimal number of clusters and producing compact clusters. In this research, an adaptive hierarchical text clustering algorithm is proposed based on Firefly Algorithm. The proposed Adaptive Firefly Algorithm (AFA) consists of three components: document clustering, cluster refining, and cluster merging. The first component introduces Weight-based Firefly Algorithm (WFA) that automatically identifies initial centers and their clusters for any given text collection. In order to refine the obtained clusters, a second algorithm, termed as Weight-based Firefly Algorithm with Relocate (WFAR), is proposed. Such an approach allows the relocation of a pre-assigned document into a newly created cluster. The third component, Weight-based Firefly Algorithm with Relocate and Merging (WFARM), aims to reduce the number of produced clusters by merging nonpure clusters into the pure ones. Experiments were conducted to compare the proposed algorithms against seven existing methods. The percentage of success in obtaining optimal number of clusters by AFA is 100% with purity and f-measure of 83% higher than the benchmarked methods. As for entropy measure, the AFA produced the lowest value (0.78) when compared to existing methods. The result indicates that Adaptive Firefly Algorithm can produce compact clusters. This research contributes to the text mining domain as hierarchical text clustering facilitates the indexing of documents and information retrieval processes

    Intelligent and Improved Self-Adaptive Anomaly based Intrusion Detection System for Networks

    With the advent of digital technology, computer networks have developed rapidly at an unprecedented pace contributing tremendously to social and economic development. They have become the backbone for all critical sectors and all the top Multi-National companies. Unfortunately, security threats for computer networks have increased dramatically over the last decade being much brazen and bolder. Intrusions or attacks on computers and networks are activities or attempts to jeopardize main system security objectives, which called as confidentiality, integrity and availability. They lead mostly in great financial losses, massive sensitive data leaks, thereby decreasing efficiency and the quality of productivity of an organization. There is a great need for an effective Network Intrusion Detection System (NIDS), which are security tools designed to interpret the intrusion attempts in incoming network traffic, thereby achieving a solid line of protection against inside and outside intruders. In this work, we propose to optimize a very popular soft computing tool prevalently used for intrusion detection namely Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN) using a novel machine learning framework called “ISAGASAA”, based on Improved Self-Adaptive Genetic Algorithm (ISAGA) and Simulated Annealing Algorithm (SAA). ISAGA is our variant of standard Genetic Algorithm (GA), which is developed based on GA improved through an Adaptive Mutation Algorithm (AMA) and optimization strategies. The optimization strategies carried out are Parallel Processing (PP) and Fitness Value Hashing (FVH) that reduce execution time, convergence time and save processing power. While, SAA was incorporated to ISAGA in order to optimize its heuristic search. Experimental results based on Kyoto University benchmark dataset version 2015 demonstrate that our optimized NIDS based BPNN called “ANID BPNN-ISAGASAA” outperforms several state-of-art approaches in terms of detection rate and false positive rate. Moreover, improvement of GA through FVH and PP saves processing power and execution time. Thus, our model is very much convenient for network anomaly detection.

    Ant-based sorting and ACO-based clustering approaches: A review

    Data clustering is used in a number of fields including statistics, bioinformatics, machine learning exploratory data analysis, image segmentation, security, medical image analysis, web handling and mathematical programming.Its role is to group data into clusters with high similarity within clusters and with high dissimilarity between clusters.This paper reviews the problems that affect clustering performance for deterministic clustering and stochastic clustering approaches.In deterministic clustering, the problems are caused by sensitivity to the number of provided clusters.In stochastic clustering, problems are caused either by the absence of an optimal number of clusters or by the projection of data.The review is focused on ant-based sorting and ACO-based clustering which have problems of slow convergence, un-robust results and local optima solution.The results from this review can be used as a guide for researchers working in the area of data clustering as it shows the strengths and weaknesses of using both clustering approaches

One of the simplest and most popular methods of segmenting pictures is histogram-based thresholding. Thresholding is a common technique for image segmentation because of its simplicity. Thresholding is used to separate the Background of the image from the Foreground. There are many methods of thresholding. This paper aims to review many previous studies and mention the types of thresholding. It includes two types: the global and local thresholding methods and each type include a group of methods. The global thresholding method includes (the Otsu method, Kapur's entropy method, Tsallis entropy method, Hysteresis method, and Fuzzy entropy method), and the local thresholding method includes ( Ni-Black method and Bernsen method). The optimization algorithms(Genetic Algorithm, Particle Swarm Optimization, Bat Algorithm, Modified Grasshopper Optimization, Firefly Algorithm, Cuckoo Search, Tabu Search Algorithm, Simulated Annealing, and Jaya Algorithm) used along with thresholding methods are also illustrated

    This book presents the collection of fifty papers which were presented in the Second International Conference on BUSINESS SUSTAINABILITY 2011 - Management, Technology and Learning for Individuals, Organisations and Society in Turbulent Environments , held in Póvoa de Varzim, Portugal, from 22ndto 24thof June, 2011.The main motive of the meeting was growing awareness of the importance of the sustainability issue. This importance had emerged from the growing uncertainty of the market behaviour that leads to the characterization of the market, i.e. environment, as turbulent. Actually, the characterization of the environment as uncertain and turbulent reflects the fact that the traditional technocratic and/or socio-technical approaches cannot effectively and efficiently lead with the present situation. In other words, the rise of the sustainability issue means the quest for new instruments to deal with uncertainty and/or turbulence. The sustainability issue has a complex nature and solutions are sought in a wide range of domains and instruments to achieve and manage it. The domains range from environmental sustainability (referring to natural environment) through organisational and business sustainability towards social sustainability. Concerning the instruments for sustainability, they range from traditional engineering and management methodologies towards “soft” instruments such as knowledge, learning, and creativity. The papers in this book address virtually whole sustainability problems space in a greater or lesser extent. However, although the uncertainty and/or turbulence, or in other words the dynamic properties, come from coupling of management, technology, learning, individuals, organisations and society, meaning that everything is at the same time effect and cause, we wanted to put the emphasis on business with the intention to address primarily companies and their businesses. Due to this reason, the main title of the book is “Business Sustainability 2.0” but with the approach of coupling Management, Technology and Learning for individuals, organisations and society in Turbulent Environments. Also, the notation“2.0” is to promote the publication as a step further from our previous publication – “Business Sustainability I” – as would be for a new version of software. Concerning the Second International Conference on BUSINESS SUSTAINABILITY, its particularity was that it had served primarily as a learning environment in which the papers published in this book were the ground for further individual and collective growth in understanding and perception of sustainability and capacity for building new instruments for business sustainability. In that respect, the methodology of the conference work was basically dialogical, meaning promoting dialog on the papers, but also including formal paper presentations. In this way, the conference presented a rich space for satisfying different authors’ and participants’ needs. Additionally, promoting the widest and global learning environment and participation, in accordance with the Conference's assumed mission to promote Proactive Generative Collaborative Learning, the Conference Organisation shares/puts open to the community the papers presented in this book, as well as the papers presented on the previous Conference(s). These papers can be accessed from the conference webpage (http://labve.dps.uminho.pt/bs11). In these terms, this book could also be understood as a complementary instrument to the Conference authors’ and participants’, but also to the wider readerships’ interested in the sustainability issues. The book brought together 107 authors from 11 countries, namely from Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Serbia, Switzerland, and United States of America. The authors “ranged” from senior and renowned scientists to young researchers providing a rich and learning environment. At the end, the editors hope, and would like, that this book to be useful, meeting the expectation of the authors and wider readership and serving for enhancing the individual and collective learning, and to incentive further scientific development and creation of new papers.
