    Deep neural learning based distributed predictive control for offshore wind farm using high fidelity LES data

    The paper explores the deep neural learning (DNL) based predictive control approach for offshore wind farm using high fidelity large eddy simulations (LES) data. The DNL architecture is defined by combining the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) units with Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) for feature extraction and prediction of the offshore wind farm. This hybrid CNN-LSTM model is developed based on the dynamic models of the wind farm and wind turbines as well as higher-fidelity LES data. Then, distributed and decentralized model predictive control (MPC) methods are developed based on the hybrid model for maximizing the wind farm power generation and minimizing the usage of the control commands. Extensive simulations based on a two-turbine and a nine-turbine wind farm cases demonstrate the high prediction accuracy (97% or more) of the trained CNN-LSTM models. They also show that the distributed MPC can achieve up to 38% increase in power generation at farm scale than the decentralized MPC. The computational time of the distributed MPC is around 0.7s at each time step, which is sufficiently fast as a real-time control solution to wind farm operations

    Load Frequency Control in Isolated Micro-Grids with Electrical Vehicles Based on Multivariable Generalized Predictive Theory

    In power systems, although the inertia energy in power sources can partly cover power unbalances caused by load disturbance or renewable energy fluctuation, it is still hard to maintain the frequency deviation within acceptable ranges. However, with the vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technique, electric vehicles (EVs) can act as mobile energy storage units, which could be a solution for load frequency control (LFC) in an isolated grid. In this paper, a LFC model of an isolated micro-grid with EVs, distributed generations and their constraints is developed. In addition, a controller based on multivariable generalized predictive control (MGPC) theory is proposed for LFC in the isolated micro-grid, where EVs and diesel generator (DG) are coordinated to achieve a satisfied performance on load frequency. A benchmark isolated micro-grid with EVs, DG, and wind farm is modeled in the Matlab/Simulink environment to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Simulation results demonstrate that with MGPC, the energy stored in EVs can be managed intelligently according to LFC requirement. This improves the system frequency stability with complex operation situations including the random renewable energy resource and the continuous load disturbances

    Predicting expected TCP throughput using genetic algorithm

    Predicting the expected throughput of TCP is important for several aspects such as e.g. determining handover criteria for future multihomed mobile nodes or determining the expected throughput of a given MPTCP subflow for load-balancing reasons. However, this is challenging due to time varying behavior of the underlying network characteristics. In this paper, we present a genetic-algorithm-based prediction model for estimating TCP throughput values. Our approach tries to find the best matching combination of mathematical functions that approximate a given time series that accounts for the TCP throughput samples using genetic algorithm. Based on collected historical datapoints about measured TCP throughput samples, our algorithm estimates expected throughput over time. We evaluate the quality of the prediction using different selection and diversity strategies for creating new chromosomes. Also, we explore the use of different fitness functions in order to evaluate the goodness of a chromosome. The goal is to show how different tuning on the genetic algorithm may have an impact on the prediction. Using extensive simulations over several TCP throughput traces, we find that the genetic algorithm successfully finds reasonable matching mathematical functions that allow to describe the TCP sampled throughput values with good fidelity. We also explore the effectiveness of predicting time series throughput samples for a given prediction horizon and estimate the prediction error and confidence.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    Building Temperature Control with Intelligent Methods

    Temperature control is important for both human comfort and the need in industry. In the thesis, two good intelligent control methods are compared to find their advantages and disadvantages. Matlab is used as the tool to make models and process calculations. The building model is one simple room in Akwesasne in New York State and the target is to keep the temperature indoor around 22 degree Centigrade from 12/29/2013 to 12/31/2013. Heat pump is used to provide or absorb heat. All data in the experiments is from JRibal Environmental eXchange network and PJM. The first method is fuzzy neural network (FNN). With the control from fuzzy logic and the learning process in neural network, the temperature is kept around 22 degree Centigrade. Another method is model predictive control (MPC) with genetic algorithm (GA). And the temperature is also controlled around 22 degree Centigrade by predicting the temperature and solar radiation. In addition, the cost is saved by using genetic algorithm with an energy storage system added in the building model. In summary, FNN is easy to build but the result is not very accurate; while the result of MPC is more accurate but the model is hard to develop. And GA is a good optimization method

    Neural Network Predictive Controller for Grid-Connected Virtual Synchronous Generator

    In this paper, a neural network predictive controller is proposed to regulate the active and the reactive power delivered to the grid generated by a three-phase virtual inertia-based inverter. The concept of the conventional virtual synchronous generator (VSG) is discussed, and it is shown that when the inverter is connected to non-inductive grids, the conventional PI-based VSGs are unable to perform acceptable tracking. The concept of the neural network predictive controller is also discussed to replace the traditional VSGs. This replacement enables inverters to perform in both inductive and non-inductive grids. The simulation results confirm that a well-trained neural network predictive controller illustrates can adapt to any grid impedance angle, compared to the traditional PI-based virtual inertia controllers.Comment: NAPS 2019 Conferenc

    NON-LINEAR MODEL PREDICTIVE CONTROL STRATEGIES FOR PROCESS PLANTS USING SOFT COMPUTING APPROACHES

    The developments of advanced non-linear control strategies have attracted a considerable research interests over the past decades especially in process control. Rather than an absolute reliance on mathematical models of process plants which often brings discrepancies especially owing to design errors and equipment degradation, non-linear models are however required because they provide improved prediction capabilities but they are very difficult to derive. In addition, the derivation of the global optimal solution gets more difficult especially when multivariable and non-linear systems are involved. Hence, this research investigates soft computing techniques for the implementation of a novel real time constrained non-linear model predictive controller (NMPC). The time-frequency localisation characteristics of wavelet neural network (WNN) were utilised for the non-linear models design using system identification approach from experimental data and improve upon the conventional artificial neural network (ANN) which is prone to low convergence rate and the difficulties in locating the global minimum point during training process. Salient features of particle swarm optimisation and a genetic algorithm (GA) were combined to optimise the network weights. Real time optimisation occurring at every sampling instant is achieved using a GA to deliver results both in simulations and real time implementation on coupled tank systems with further extension to a complex quadruple tank process in simulations.
