    Analysis of wireless and catenary power transfer systems for electric vehicle range extension on rural highways

    This paper analyzes two different transportation electrification charging schemes, i.e., an embedded wireless power transfer system and an overhead catenary wire system, for use in range extension of electric vehicles on rural highways. The efficiency, feasibility, and benefits of the two schemes are examined. Electric vehicles currently lack widespread popularity mainly due to battery limitations, especially for long distance travel. The rural highway charging methods presented here can greatly increase the range of electric vehicles while decreasing battery sizes. Average modeling approaches for power electronics and vehicle usage were developed in MATLAB/Simulink to compare the two systems, each at two power levels. 30 kW and 48 kW were chosen to demonstrate the differences between power levels, both capable of maintaining a positive net charge on a dynamic electric vehicle. Component efficiencies, energy transfer levels, and installation percentages for the various models were determined. The models were applied to California highway I-5 to show immense potential savings over gasoline vehicles. It was shown that catenary charging is cheaper and has higher energy transfer than wireless; however, it has difficulty servicing all vehicle types, has visible wires, and requires more maintenance. A small scale hardware prototype of the WPT system was created in order to demonstrate the feasibility of power transfer at the proposed relative distances and speeds.Ope

    Prognostics and health management for an overhead contact line system - A review

    The railway industry in European countries is standing a significant competition from other modes of transportation, particularly in the field of freight transport. In this competitive context, railway stakeholders need to modernize their products and develop innovative solutions to manage their asset and reduce operational expenditures. As a result, activities such as condition-based and predictive maintenance became a major concern. Under those circumstances, there is a pressing need to implement prognostics and health management (PHM) solutions such as remote monitoring, fault diagnostics techniques, and prognostics technologies. Many studies in the PHM area for railway applications are focused on infrastructure systems such as railway track or turnouts. However, one of the key systems to ensure an efficient operability of the infrastructure is the overhead contact line (OCL). A defect or a failure of an OCL component may cause considerable delays, lead to important financial losses, or affect passengers safety. In addition maintaining this kind of geographically distributed systems is costly and difficult to forecast. This article reviews the state of practice and the state of the art of PHM for overhead contact line system. Key sensors, monitoring parameters, state detection algorithms, diagnostics approaches and prognostics models are reviewed. Also, research challenges and technical needs are highlighted

    Pantograph arc location estimation using resonant frequencies in DC railway power systems

    Pantograph arcing in electrified railway systems not only reduces the power collection quality of a locomotive but can also damage pantograph strips and overhead lines (OHLs). Most research detects pantograph-to-OHL arcs based on onboard voltage/current measurements, pantograph cameras, and so on. The use of onboard voltage/current data, though being cost-effective, rarely reflects arc locations along OHLs. This article develops an arc positioning method, which matches the position-dependent resonant frequency (RF) of an OHL with the RF extracted from voltage measurements in a pantograph arc event. A particular 20-km DC railway line supplied by two substations is first modelled in MATLAB/Simulink, with the model effectiveness being assessed based on voltage measurements in an arc event. Then, the OHL-related RFs estimated by the model are validated by the Tableau formula and discussed alongside impacts on RFs based on line models, locomotive locations, and line lengths. These evaluations permit the generation of an RF curve that links OHL-related RFs with arc locations. The arc positioning method is tested based on the pantograph arc events presumed at various positions along the 20-km line, showing errors within 0.2 km at certain locations. The ability to determine arc locations will permit periodic inspections to be performed on the determined line sections

    IVIsion and IVInet – Tool Chain for the Electrification of City Bus Routes

    AbstractThe Fraunhofer Institute for Transportation and Infrastructure (IVI) developed a method and matching tools (IVIsion and IVInet) that analyzes and evaluates individual bus routes or entire bus route networks regarding their suitability for electric buses.IVInet analyses the vehicle rostering plan and the route network. The software is designed especially for the development of suitable solutions in the transfer from diesel-powered bus networks to electric buses. Based on generalized values for traction energy demands and simplified assumptions regarding the energy demand of auxiliaries, heating, and cooling, the state of charge of the energy storage is analysed for the vehicle circulation under consideration of a boost charging strategy. With an optimization method the optimal number of charging infrastructure will be find under given conditions.IVIsion is an in-house development that comprises several program modules for data processing, for the calculation of driving systems, and for evaluating the calculation results. At least it contains more than 200 preconfigured drive trains for conventional, parallel, and serial hybrid as well as purely electrical driving systems. IVIsion offers opportunity for detailed calculations that take into account models for auxiliary units, the wiring system, drive train cooling, and passenger compartment air conditioning. All powertrain components, auxiliary components and their respective intelligent control strategies are part of the tool. The usage of the tool chain is explained in an application example

Por una parte, se propone unainnovadora estrategia energética, basada en lógica difusa, para gestionar la división de la demanda depotencia entre las fuentes de energía disponibles a bordo del vehículo. La estrategia adaptativa que sepropone evalúa la información energética actual y futura (estimada) para adaptar, de una formaoptimizada y eficiente, la operación del sistema con el objetivo de mejorar el aprovechamiento de laenergía almacenada en los recursos a bordo del vehículo.Por otro lado, se ha propuesto una metodología para la co-optimización de la estrategia de gestión ydimensionamiento del HESS. Esta metodología de optimización evalúa tanto técnica comoeconómicamente las posibles soluciones mediante un problema multi-objetivo basado en algoritmosgenéticos.     From Preface: This is the fourteenth time when the conference “Dynamical Systems: Theory and Applications” gathers a numerous group of outstanding scientists and engineers, who deal with widely understood problems of theoretical and applied dynamics. Organization of the conference would not have been possible without a great effort of the staff of the Department of Automation, Biomechanics and Mechatronics. The patronage over the conference has been taken by the Committee of Mechanics of the Polish Academy of Sciences and Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Poland. It is a great pleasure that our invitation has been accepted by recording in the history of our conference number of people, including good colleagues and friends as well as a large group of researchers and scientists, who decided to participate in the conference for the first time. With proud and satisfaction we welcomed over 180 persons from 31 countries all over the world. They decided to share the results of their research and many years experiences in a discipline of dynamical systems by submitting many very interesting papers. This year, the DSTA Conference Proceedings were split into three volumes entitled “Dynamical Systems” with respective subtitles: Vibration, Control and Stability of Dynamical Systems; Mathematical and Numerical Aspects of Dynamical System Analysis and Engineering Dynamics and Life Sciences. Additionally, there will be also published two volumes of Springer Proceedings in Mathematics and Statistics entitled “Dynamical Systems in Theoretical Perspective” and “Dynamical Systems in Applications”
