    Modeling the Internet of Things: a simulation perspective

    This paper deals with the problem of properly simulating the Internet of Things (IoT). Simulating an IoT allows evaluating strategies that can be employed to deploy smart services over different kinds of territories. However, the heterogeneity of scenarios seriously complicates this task. This imposes the use of sophisticated modeling and simulation techniques. We discuss novel approaches for the provision of scalable simulation scenarios, that enable the real-time execution of massively populated IoT environments. Attention is given to novel hybrid and multi-level simulation techniques that, when combined with agent-based, adaptive Parallel and Distributed Simulation (PADS) approaches, can provide means to perform highly detailed simulations on demand.     Network-based business process management: embedding business logic in communications networks

    Advanced Business Process Management (BPM) tools enable the decomposition of previously integrated and often ill-defined processes into re-usable process modules. These process modules can subsequently be distributed on the Internet over a variety of many different actors, each with their own specialization and economies-of-scale. The economic benefits of process specialization can be huge. However, how should such actors in a business network find, select, and control, the best partner for what part of the business process, in such a way that the best result is achieved? This particular management challenge requires more advanced techniques and tools in the enabling communications networks. An approach has been developed to embed business logic into the communications networks in order to optimize the allocation of business resources from a network point of view.     The federal universal service scheme is designed to ensure that everyone has affordable access to advanced telecommunications and information services. Despite the development of cost-effective technologies that drastically reduce the cost of telephone services vis-à-vis the Internet and Wi-Fi networks, federal regulations generally prevent municipalities or private companies from providing wireless Internet access with universal service funds. Federal regulations have replaced technology costs, lack of business incentives, and consumer affordability as the primary barrier to universal service. Competitive neutrality, the pro-competitive and technology-neutral approach to universal service funding, must be fully embraced in order to empower local communities with the choice of technologies that best suits their residents in providing universal and affordable access to advanced telecommunications and information services

    A telecom analytics framework for dynamic quality of service management

    Since the beginning of Internet, Internet Service Providers (ISP) have seen the need of giving to users? traffic different treatments defined by agree- ments between ISP and customers. This procedure, known as Quality of Service Management, has not much changed in the last years (DiffServ and Deep Pack-et Inspection have been the most chosen mechanisms). However, the incremen-tal growth of Internet users and services jointly with the application of recent Ma- chine Learning techniques, open up the possibility of going one step for-ward in the smart management of network traffic. In this paper, we first make a survey of current tools and techniques for QoS Management. Then we intro-duce clustering and classifying Machine Learning techniques for traffic charac-terization and the concept of Quality of Experience. Finally, with all these com-ponents, we present a brand new framework that will manage in a smart way Quality of Service in a telecom Big Data based scenario, both for mobile and fixed communications

    A quadri-dimensional approach for poor performance prioritization in mobile networks using Big Data

    Abstract The Management of mobile networks has become so complex due to a huge number of devices, technologies and services involved. Network optimization and incidents management in mobile networks determine the level of the quality of service provided by the communication service providers (CSPs). Generally, the down time of a system and the time taken to repair [mean time to repair (MTTR)] has a direct impact on the revenue, especially on the operational expenditure (OPEX). A fast root cause analysis (RCA) mechanism is therefore crucial to improve the efficiency of the operational team within the CSPs. This paper proposes a quadri-dimensional approach (i.e. services, subscribers, handsets and cells) to build a service quality management (SQM) tree in a Big Data platform. This is meant to speed up the root cause analysis and prioritize the elements impacting the performance of the network. Two algorithms have been proposed; the first one, to normalize the performance indicators and the second one to build the SQM tree by aggregating the performance indicators for different dimensions to allow ranking and detection of tree paths with the worst performance. Additionally, the proposed approach will allow CSPs to detect the mobile network dimensions causing network issues in a faster way and protect their revenue while improving the quality of the service delivered
