Quality of service optimization of multimedia traffic in mobile networks
Mobile communication systems have continued to evolve beyond the currently deployed Third
Generation (3G) systems with the main goal of providing higher capacity. Systems beyond 3G
are expected to cater for a wide variety of services such as speech, data, image transmission,
video, as well as multimedia services consisting of a combination of these. With the air interface
being the bottleneck in mobile networks, recent enhancing technologies such as the High Speed
Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA), incorporate major changes to the radio access segment of
3G Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS). HSDPA introduces new features
such as fast link adaptation mechanisms, fast packet scheduling, and physical layer retransmissions
in the base stations, necessitating buffering of data at the air interface which presents a
bottleneck to end-to-end communication. Hence, in order to provide end-to-end Quality of
Service (QoS) guarantees to multimedia services in wireless networks such as HSDPA, efficient
buffer management schemes are required at the air interface.
The main objective of this thesis is to propose and evaluate solutions that will address the
QoS optimization of multimedia traffic at the radio link interface of HSDPA systems. In the
thesis, a novel queuing system known as the Time-Space Priority (TSP) scheme is proposed for
multimedia traffic QoS control. TSP provides customized preferential treatment to the constituent
flows in the multimedia traffic to suit their diverse QoS requirements. With TSP queuing, the
real-time component of the multimedia traffic, being delay sensitive and loss tolerant, is given
transmission priority; while the non-real-time component, being loss sensitive and delay tolerant,
enjoys space priority. Hence, based on the TSP queuing paradigm, new buffer managementalgorithms are designed for joint QoS control of the diverse components in a multimedia session
of the same HSDPA user. In the thesis, a TSP based buffer management algorithm known as the
Enhanced Time Space Priority (E-TSP) is proposed for HSDPA. E-TSP incorporates flow
control mechanisms to mitigate congestion in the air interface buffer of a user with multimedia
session comprising real-time and non-real-time flows. Thus, E-TSP is designed to provide
efficient network and radio resource utilization to improve end-to-end multimedia traffic
performance. In order to allow real-time optimization of the QoS control between the real-time
and non-real-time flows of the HSDPA multimedia session, another TSP based buffer management
algorithm known as the Dynamic Time Space Priority (D-TSP) is proposed. D-TSP
incorporates dynamic priority switching between the real-time and non-real-time flows. D-TSP
is designed to allow optimum QoS trade-off between the flows whilst still guaranteeing the
stringent real-time componentâs QoS requirements. The thesis presents results of extensive
performance studies undertaken via analytical modelling and dynamic network-level HSDPA
simulations demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed TSP queuing system and the TSP
based buffer management schemes
Performance Modelling and Optimisation of Multi-hop Networks
A major challenge in the design of large-scale networks is to predict and optimise the
total time and energy consumption required to deliver a packet from a source node to a
destination node. Examples of such complex networks include wireless ad hoc and sensor
networks which need to deal with the effects of node mobility, routing inaccuracies, higher
packet loss rates, limited or time-varying effective bandwidth, energy constraints, and the
computational limitations of the nodes. They also include more reliable communication
environments, such as wired networks, that are susceptible to random failures, security
threats and malicious behaviours which compromise their quality of service (QoS) guarantees.
In such networks, packets traverse a number of hops that cannot be determined
in advance and encounter non-homogeneous network conditions that have been largely
ignored in the literature. This thesis examines analytical properties of packet travel in
large networks and investigates the implications of some packet coding techniques on both
QoS and resource utilisation.
Specifically, we use a mixed jump and diffusion model to represent packet traversal
through large networks. The model accounts for network non-homogeneity regarding
routing and the loss rate that a packet experiences as it passes successive segments of a
source to destination route. A mixed analytical-numerical method is developed to compute
the average packet travel time and the energy it consumes. The model is able to capture
the effects of increased loss rate in areas remote from the source and destination, variable
rate of advancement towards destination over the route, as well as of defending against
malicious packets within a certain distance from the destination. We then consider sending
multiple coded packets that follow independent paths to the destination node so as to
mitigate the effects of losses and routing inaccuracies. We study a homogeneous medium
and obtain the time-dependent properties of the packetâs travel process, allowing us to
compare the merits and limitations of coding, both in terms of delivery times and energy
efficiency. Finally, we propose models that can assist in the analysis and optimisation
of the performance of inter-flow network coding (NC). We analyse two queueing models
for a router that carries out NC, in addition to its standard packet routing function. The
approach is extended to the study of multiple hops, which leads to an optimisation problem
that characterises the optimal time that packets should be held back in a router, waiting
for coding opportunities to arise, so that the total packet end-to-end delay is minimised
Packet level measurement over wireless access
PhDPerformance Measurement of the IP packet networks mainly comprise of monitoring the network performance in terms of packet losses and delays. If used appropriately, these network parameters (i.e. delay, loss and bandwidth etc) can indicate the performance status of the network and they can be used in fault and performance monitoring, network provisioning, and traffic engineering. Globally, there is a growing need for accurate network measurement to support the commercial use of IP networks. In wireless networks, transmission losses and communication delays strongly affect the performance of the network. Compared to wired networks, wireless networks experience higher levels of data dropouts, and corruption due to issues of channel fading, noise, interference and mobility. Performance monitoring is a vital element in the commercial future of broadband packet networking and the ability to guarantee quality of service in such networks is implicit in Service Level Agreements.
Active measurements are performed by injecting probes, and this is widely used to determine the end to end performance. End to end delay in wired networks has been extensively investigated, and in this thesis we report on the accuracy achieved by probing for end to end delay over a wireless scenario. We have compared two probing techniques i.e. Periodic and Poisson probing, and estimated the absolute error for both. The simulations have been performed for single hop and multi- hop wireless networks.
In addition to end to end latency, Active measurements have also been performed for packet loss rate. The simulation based analysis has been tried under different traffic scenarios using Poisson Traffic Models. We have sampled the user traffic using Periodic probing at different rates for single hop and multiple hop wireless scenarios.

Active probing becomes critical at higher values of load forcing the network to saturation much earlier. We have evaluated the impact of monitoring overheads on the user traffic, and show that even small amount of probing overhead in a wireless medium can cause large degradation in network performance. Although probing at high rate provides a good estimation of delay distribution of user traffic with large variance yet there is a critical tradeoff between the accuracy of measurement and the packet probing overhead. Our results suggest that active probing is highly affected by probe size, rate, pattern, traffic load, and nature of shared medium, available bandwidth and the burstiness of the traffic
Performance Study of Shared Versus Nonshared Bandwidth on a Packet-Switched Network
In wide area computer data communications, many networks have evolved by satisfying increased user demands in the most expedient manner. In some cases, new usersâ demands are satisfied by installing a new link, rather than sharing the links that are already in place. This research investigates the differences in performance between using a dedicated link for each source destination pair (nonshared bandwidth) and using a single link to be used by all source destination pairs (shared bandwidth). Simulation models are developed for a wide area network using shared bandwidth, and a wide area network using nonshared bandwidth. The quality of service offered by each network is based on its responsiveness and productivity. Responsiveness will be measured in terms of average end to end delay of packet transmission, and productivity will be measured in terms of percent bandwidth utilization. The networks are modeled under a common set of operating assumptions and system environment. This allows for accurate comparison of packet delay and bandwidth utilization. Two variable input parameters are used in the simulation: intensity of input traffic load, and amount of link capacity. Provided that the intensity of the input traffic load remains below the network saturation level, it is shown that the shared system clearly outperforms the nonshared system. This result occurs for both a uniform and a nonuniform traffic load destination distribution
An assembly and offset assignment scheme for self-similar traffic in optical burst switching
Includes bibliographical references.Optical Burst Switching (OBS) is a viable technology for the next generation core network. We propose an FEC-assembly scheme that efficiently assembles self-similar traffic and a Pareto-offset assignment rather than a constant offset assignment. Two buffers, a packet buffer and a burst buffer, are implemented at the Label Edge Router (LER), buffering traffic in the electronic domain. The assembler, between the packet and burst buffers, is served by the packet queue while the assembler serves the burst queue. We outline advantages of why burst assembly cannot be implemented independent of offset assignment. The two schemes must be implemented in a complementary way if QoS is to be realized in an OBS network. We show that there is a direct relation between OBS network performance with burst assembly and offset assignment. We present simulation results of the assembly and offset assignment proposals using the ns2 network simulator. Our results show that the combination of the proposed FEC-Based assembly scheme with the proposed Pareto-offset assignment scheme give better network performance in terms of burst drop, resource contention and delay. Key to any traffic shaping is the nature traffic being shaped. This work also compares performance of both traditional exponential traffic with realistic Self-Similar traffic of Internet traffic on the proposed assembly and offset assignment schemes. In our simulations, we assume that all Label Switch Routers (LSR) have wavelength converters and are without optical buffers. We use Latest Available Unused Channel with Void Filling (LAUC-VF) scheduling scheme and use Just Enough Time (JET) reservation scheme
Fluid flow queue models for fixed-mobile network evaluation
A methodology for fast and accurate end-to-end KPI, like throughput and delay, estimation is proposed based on the service-centric traffic flow analysis and the fluid flow queuing model named CURSA-SQ. Mobile network features, like shared medium and mobility, are considered defining the models to be taken into account such as the propagation models and the fluid flow scheduling model. The developed methodology provides accurate computation of these KPIs, while performing orders of magnitude faster than discrete event simulators like ns-3. Finally, this methodology combined to its capacity for performance estimation in MPLS networks enables its application for near real-time converged fixed-mobile networks operation as it is proven in three use case scenarios
Performability modelling of homogenous and heterogeneous multiserver systems with breakdowns and repairs
This thesis presents analytical modelling of homogeneous multi-server systems with reconfiguration and rebooting delays, heterogeneous multi-server systems with one main and several identical servers, and farm paradigm multi-server systems. This thesis also includes a number of other research works such as, fast performability evaluation models of open networks of nodes with repairs and finite queuing capacities, multi-server systems with deferred repairs, and two stage tandem networks with failures, repairs and multiple servers at the second stage. Applications of these for the popular Beowulf cluster systems and memory servers are
also accomplished.
Existing techniques used in performance evaluation of multi-server systems are investigated and analysed in detail. Pure performance modelling techniques, pure availability models,
and performability models are also considered. First, the existing approaches for pure performance modelling are critically analysed with the discussions on merits and demerits. Then relevant terminology is defined and explained. Since the pure performance models tend to be too optimistic and pure availability models are too conservative, performability models are used for the evaluation of multi-server systems. Fault-tolerant multi-server systems can
continue service in case of certain failures. If failure does not occur at a critical point (such as breakdown of the head processor of a farm paradigm system) the system continues serving in a degraded mode of operation. In such systems, reconfiguration and/or rebooting delays are expected while a processor is being mapped out from the system. These delay stages are also taken into account in addition to failures and repairs, in the exact performability models that are developed. Two dimensional Markov state space representations of the systems are used for performability modelling. Following the critical analysis of the existing solution techniques, the Spectral Expansion method is chosen for the solution of the models developed.
In this work, open queuing networks are also considered. To evaluate their performability, existing modelling approaches are expanded and validated by simulations, for performability
analysis of multistage open networks with finite queuing capacities. The performances of two extended modelling approaches are compared in terms of accuracy for open networks with various queuing capacities.
Deferred repair strategies are becoming popular because of the cost reductions they can provide. Effects of using deferred repairs are analysed and performability models are provided
for homogeneous multi-server systems and highly available farm paradigm multi-server systems.
Since one of the random variables is used to represent the number of jobs in one of the queues, analytical models for performance evaluation of two stage tandem networks suffer
because of numerical cumbersomeness. Existing approaches for modelling these systems are actually pure performance models since breakdowns and repairs cannot be considered. One way of modelling these systems can be to divide one of the random variables to present both the operative and non-operative states of the server in one dimension. However, this will give rise to state explosion problem severely limiting the maximum queue capacity that can be handled. In order to overcome this problem a new approach is presented for modelling two stage tandem networks in three dimensions. An approximate solution is presented to solve such a system.
This approach manifests itself as a novel contribution for alleviating the state space explosion problem for large and/or complex systems. When two state tandem networks with feedback are modelled using this approach, the operative states can be handled independently and this makes it possible to consider multiple operative states at the second stage.
The analytical models presented can be used with various parameters and they are extendible to consider systems with similar architectures. The developed three dimensional approach is capable to handle two stage tandem networks with various characteristics for performability measures. All the approaches presented give accurate results.
Numerical solutions are presented for all models developed. In case the solution presented is not exact, simulations are performed to validate the accuracy of the results obtained
Performance Modeling of Softwarized Network Services Based on Queuing Theory with Experimental Validation
Network Functions Virtualization facilitates the automation of the scaling of softwarized network services (SNSs).
However, the realization of such a scenario requires a way to
determine the needed amount of resources so that the SNSs performance requisites are met for a given workload. This problem is
known as resource dimensioning, and it can be efficiently tackled
by performance modeling. In this vein, this paper describes an
analytical model based on an open queuing network of G/G/m
queues to evaluate the response time of SNSs. We validate our
model experimentally for a virtualized Mobility Management
Entity (vMME) with a three-tiered architecture running on
a testbed that resembles a typical data center virtualization
environment. We detail the description of our experimental
setup and procedures. We solve our resulting queueing network
by using the Queueing Networks Analyzer (QNA), Jacksonâs
networks, and Mean Value Analysis methodologies, and compare
them in terms of estimation error. Results show that, for medium
and high workloads, the QNA method achieves less than half of
error compared to the standard techniques. For low workloads,
the three methods produce an error lower than 10%. Finally,
we show the usefulness of the model for performing the dynamic
provisioning of the vMME experimentally.This work has been partially funded by the H2020 research
