    An investigation of transitional management problems for the NSTS at NASA, executive summary

    A summary is given of the work of the University of Houston research team for the third quarter of effort in a yearly grant for the National Space Transportation System (NSTS). As such it serves as a resting place for the ideas and concepts developed this quarter with the collaboration of the Management Integration Offices of NASA. Another objective is the hope that the report will help to stimulate the healthy problem solving process already present at NASA. The main goal of the contractual work is to help NASA to find ways and means of moving into a truly operational era with the shuttle program. This work is a continuation of early work and the reader is encouraged to read the final reports of earlier years. Chapter One of the report is an introduction. Chapter Two deals with industrial adaptation and is in two parts: theory and application. In the theory section, impressions of the management system immediately after reflight are discussed. A key issue, in the author's opinion is the seeming lack of purpose of the program. The application section has six appendices: 1988 Demographic Survey, Field Notes of Interview with HL/P South Texas Nuclear Project, a comparison of the Agendas of the current manager with that of a previous manager, a note on compartmentalization to assist in manifesting, a study on launch prediction for STS-26, and a discussion of a statistical decision-making course for upper level managers. Chapter Three deals with theoretical results returned on flow shop scheduling which will be of use downstream. Chapter Four deals with a statistical model developed to predict the flight rate in future years and indicates the program will have trouble making its schedule. Chapter Five covers the constructural effort and shows the work to be on schedule

    Natural ZMP trajectories for biped robot reference generation

    The control of a biped humanoid is a challenging task due to the hard-to-stabilize dynamics. Walking reference trajectory generation is a key problem. Linear Inverted Pendulum Model (LIPM) and Zero Moment Point (ZMP) Criterion based approaches in stable walking reference generation are reported. In these methods, generally, the ZMP reference during a stepping motion is kept fixed in the middle of the supporting foot sole. This kind of reference generation lacks naturalness, in that, the ZMP in the human walk does not stay fixed, but it moves forward under the supporting foot. This paper proposes a reference generation algorithm based on the LIPM and moving support foot ZMP references. The application of Fourier series approximation simplifies the solution and it generates a smooth ZMP reference. A simple inverse kinematics based joint space controller is used for the tests of the developed reference trajectory through full-dynamics 3D simulation. A 12 DOF biped robot model is used in the simulations. Simulation studies suggest that the moving ZMP references are more energy efficient than the ones with fixed ZMP under the supporting foot. The results are promising for implementations

    Data-driven Soft Sensors in the Process Industry

    In the last two decades Soft Sensors established themselves as a valuable alternative to the traditional means for the acquisition of critical process variables, process monitoring and other tasks which are related to process control. This paper discusses characteristics of the process industry data which are critical for the development of data-driven Soft Sensors. These characteristics are common to a large number of process industry fields, like the chemical industry, bioprocess industry, steel industry, etc. The focus of this work is put on the data-driven Soft Sensors because of their growing popularity, already demonstrated usefulness and huge, though yet not completely realised, potential. A comprehensive selection of case studies covering the three most important Soft Sensor application fields, a general introduction to the most popular Soft Sensor modelling techniques as well as a discussion of some open issues in the Soft Sensor development and maintenance and their possible solutions are the main contributions of this work

    Fault detection and diagnosis of a plastic film extrusion process

    This paper presents a new approach to the design of a model-based fault detection and diagnosis system for application to a plastic film extrusion process. The design constructs a residual generator via parity relations. A multi-objective optimisation problem must be solved in order for the residual to be sensitive to faults but insensitive to disturbances and modelling errors. In this paper, we exploit a genetic algorithm for solving this multi-objective optimisation problem and the resulting fault detection and diagnosis system is applied to a first-principles model of a plastic film extrusion process. Simulation results demonstrate that various types of faults can be detected and diagnosed successfully

    Model-based controller design for a plastic film extrusion process

    This paper reports the development and implementation of a model-based cross-directional controller for plastic film extrusion and other web-forming processes. The controller design has a similar structure to that of internal model control (IMC) with the addition of an observer whose gain is designed to minimise process and model mis-match. The observer gain is obtained by solving a multi-objective optimisation through the application of a genetic algorithm and simulation results are presented in this paper demonstrating improvements that can be achieved by the proposed controller over two existing CD controllers

The rise of e-commerce, greater customer service demands of retail stores, and a shortage of skilled labor have intensified competition for efficient warehouse operations. This takes place during an era of shortening technology life cycles.
