    RFID based Anti-theft System for Metropolia UAS Electronics laboratories

    The aim of this thesis is to study different types of RFID based anti-Theft system implementation suitable for Metropolia Electronics laboratory environment to deter theft taking into account several installation requirements. The operating frequencies of the RFID anti-theft system are from low frequency to High frequencies range and governed by different standards based on the region it is going to be implemented. The introduction of this thesis will go through Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and different RFID based anti-theft system advantages in various areas for instance in access management and control application. Study current Metropolia UAS electronics laboratory overall control mechanism comparing to the anti-theft RFID system used by Metropolia library to prevent and deter various theft actions to their valuable items and books. The scope of this thesis is limited to study different RFID based anti-theft technologies based on their power source, cost, reading range and deployment requirement. However, encryption and related security aspects are beyond the scope of this project. In addition, the project is only to study different cases of RFID based anti-theft implementation. Otherwise, there is no hardware or software design or related implementation including testing of the technology is conducted due to expensive cost constraint to buy the proposed RFID gate but propose measurement set-up that can be done in the future on entrance door of the fifth floor electronics laboratory corridor of Metropolia UAS campus.     Viime vuosina palveluliiketoiminnan merkitys ydinosaamista tukevana prosessina on kasvanut merkittävästi. Metso Paperin ydinosaamista on paperikoneiden valmistus mutta Service liiketoimintaan panostetaan vahvasti ja siltä odotetaan kasvua. Tällä osa-alueella logistiikalla ja etenkin materiaalin tunnistamisella on iso vaikutus prosessien tehokkuuteen. Viivakoodi on yleisesti ollut hallitseva automaattisen tunnistamisen menetelmä mutta sillä on omat rajoituksensa. RFID:llä nämä rajoitukset voidaan voittaa. Standardisoinnin sekä teknisen kehityksen ansiosta se on nopeasti noussut vaihtoehtoiseksi menetelmäksi tehostaa logistiikkaa. Siksi Metso Paper Service on nähnyt RFID tutkimuksen tarpeelliseksi. Tämän Pro Gradu tutkimuksen tarkoitus on selvittää voidaanko RFID:llä tehostaa Metso Paper Servicen nimettyjä prosesseja. Tavoitteena on tunnistaa ne prosessit joissa RFID:llä voitaisiin saavuttaa liiketoiminnallisia parannuksia ja kustannussäästöjä nykyiseen toimintamalliin verrattuna. Tutkimus on toteutettu haastattelemalla avainhenkilöitä teema kysymyksillä 8:sta toimeksiantajan nimeämästä prosessista. Haastattelun ja tilastollisen aineiston perusteella nykyiset toimintamallit ja materiaalin tunnistamiseen liittyvät oleelliset asiat on kuvattu prosessikarttoineen. Lisäksi teoriaosa esittelee RFID tekniikan pääosin tasolla, jonka käyttäjän on hyvä tietää. Tältä pohjalta on analysoitu pystytäänkö RFID:n avulla tehostamaan prosessin toimintaa. Tutkimuksessa havaittiin että useampi prosessi kehittyisi jollakin tavalla RFID:stä mutta toteutettavuus ja saavutettavan hyödyn määrä vaihtelevat. Kuitenkin yksi prosessi muodostui muita selvästi sopivammaksi. Tutkimuksen viimeisessä osassa on selvitetty RFID:n tarkemmat toiminnalliset sekä taloudelliset vaikutukset tähän prosessiin, niin tarkasti kuin se etukäteen on mahdollista.     Feasibility analysis of using microcircuit technology in logistics applications/radio frequency (MITLA/RF) to support equipment maintenance management

    This thesis presents the background, criteria, and baseline recommendations for a Microcircuit Technology in Logistics Application/Radio Frequency (MITLA/RF) proposal to support developing maintenance management doctrine. Its main thrust is a preliminary feasibility analysis of MITLA/RF to identify key issues with regard to maintenance operations within emerging Operational Maneuver From The Sea (OMFTS) concepts. This thesis surveys current requirements, information systems initiatives, test/evaluation results, implementation issues, and technology tradeoffs. It offers alternatives to reliance on manual record keeping and frameworks for enhancing horizontal/ vertical information flows, explores several near real-time interactive decision making tools, and suggests doctrinal improvements through a fusion of procedural and high-tech approaches.     Security is becoming an increasingly more important concern both at the desktop level and at the network level. This article discusses several approaches to authenticating individuals through the use of biometric devices. While libraries might not implement such devices, they may appear in the near future of desktop computing, particularly for access to institutional computers or for access to sensitive information. Other approaches to computer security focus on protecting the contents of electronic transmissions and verification of individual users. After a brief overview of encryption technologies, the article examines public-key cryptography which is getting a lot of attention in the business world in what is called public key infrastructure. It also examines other efforts, such as IBM’s Cryptolope, the Secure Sockets Layer of Web browsers, and Digital Certificates and Signatures. Secure electronic transmissions are an important condition for conducting business on the Net. These business transactions are not limited to purchase orders, invoices, and contracts. This could become an important tool for information vendors and publishers to control access to the electronic resources they license. As license negotiators and contract administrators, librarians need to be aware of what is happening in these new technologies and the impact that will have on their operations

    The Development of an Automated Production System

    This paper describes the development of an automated production system recently completed by the Martin Marietta Aerospace Division, Orlando, Florida, for the assembly, inspection and test of printed circuit boards. The project began in January 1981 with the purpose of increasing the then existing production capability and to create the building block for the total automation of the printed circuit board assembly area of the plant in Ocala, Florida. The system was implemented using a combination of off the shelf equipment modified and integrated to create a single production system. The system employs much of the new production philosophies tailored to meet the particular needs of Martin Marietta and to fulfill present production requirements as well as future production projections. During the development and implementation of this project, flexibility within the team was required to accommodate for the unforeseen problems which surfaced. The actual work required to perform this task far exceeded the expectations of the team and the company. This document covers all facets of this project, from inception to operation, and describes the problems encountered and lessons learned throughout the project
