    Impact of PWM strategies on RMS current of the DC-link Voltage Capacitor of a dual-three phase drive

    The major drawback of usual dual three-phase AC machines, when supplied by a Voltage Source Inverter (VSI), is the occurrence of extra harmonic currents which circulate in the stator windings causing additional losses and constraints on the power component. This paper compares dedicated Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) strategies used for controlling a dual three phase Permanent Magnet Synchronous machine supplied by a six-leg VSI. Since the application is intended for low-voltage (48V) mild-hybrid automotive traction, an additional major constraint arises: the compactness of the drive related to the size of the DC-bus capacitor. Thus, the PWM strategy must be chosen by taking into consideration its impact on both, the motor and the RMS value of DC-bus current

    This paper presents the operation of grid tied, two level voltage source inverter (VSI) during network voltage unbalance. The control system was implemented in synchronous rotating reference frame dq0 (SRF). Two types of control structures were investigated herein. First utilizes the Double Decoupled SRF Phase-locked loop (DDSRF-PLL) synchronisation with positive and negative sequence currents control. Second one is simplified system that does not provide symmetrical components decomposition and decoupling for synchronisation. Simulation results exhibited a superior performance of the DDSRF-PLL control system under grid voltage unbalance.Niniejszy artykuł przedstawia pracę dwupoziomowego falownika napięcia współpracującego z siecią, podczas przejściowej asymetrii napięć. System sterowania został zaimplementowany w wirującym układzie synchronicznym dq0. Przeanalizowano dwa typy sterowania. W pierwszym zastosowano metodę synchronizacji z odprzęganiem DDSRF-PLL wraz z możliwością kontroli prądów składowej zgodnej i przeciwnej. Drugi natomiast w swoje uproszczeni formie nie pozwalała na sterowanie obu składowych symetrycznych, zabrakło również odprzęgania podczas synchronizacji z siecią. Wyniki symulacji pokazały o wiele lepsze działanie pierwszej metody sterowania

    Predictive current control in electrical drives: an illustrated review with case examples using a five-phase induction motor drive with distributed windings

    The industrial application of electric machines in variable-speed drives has grown in the last decades thanks to the development of microprocessors and power converters. Although three-phase machines constitute the most common case, the interest of the research community has been recently focused on machines with more than three phases, known as multiphase machines. The principal reason lies in the exploitation of their advantages like reliability, better current distribution among phases or lower current harmonic production in the power converter than conventional three-phase ones, to name a few. Nevertheless, multiphase drives applications require the development of complex controllers to regulate the torque (or speed) and flux of the machine. In this regard, predictive current controllers have recently appeared as a viable alternative due to an easy formulation and a high flexibility to incorporate different control objectives. It is found however that these controllers face some peculiarities and limitations in their use that require attention. This work attempts to tackle the predictive current control technique as a viable alternative for the regulation of multiphase drives, paying special attention to the development of the control technique and the discussion of the benefits and limitations. Case examples with experimental results in a symmetrical five-phase induction machine with distributed windings in motoring mode of operation are used to this end

    Mitigation of DC Current Injection in Transformerless Grid-Connected Inverters

    PhD ThesisWith a large number of small-scale PV plants being connected to the utility grid, there is increasing interest in the use of transformerless systems for grid-connected inverter photovoltaic applications. Compared to transformer-coupled solutions, transformerless systems offer a typical efficiency increase of 1-2%, reduced system size and weight, and reductions in cost. However, the removal of the transformer has technical implications. In addition to the loss of galvanic isolation, DC current injection into the grid is a potential risk. Whilst desirable, the complete mitigation of DC current injection via conventional current control methods is known to be particularly challenging, and there are remaining implementation issues in previous studies. For this reason, this thesis aims to minimize DC current injection in grid-connected transformerless PV inverter systems. The first part of the thesis reviews the technical challenges and implementation issues in published DC measurement techniques and suppression methods. Given mathematical models, the performance of conventional current controllers in terms of DC and harmonics mitigation is analyzed and further confirmed in simulations and experiments under different operating conditions. As a result, the second part of the thesis introduces two DC suppression methods, a DC voltage mitigation approach and a DC link current sensing technique. The former method uses a combination of a passive attenuation circuit and a software filter stage to extract the DC voltage component, which allows for further digital control and DC component mitigation at the inverter output. It is proven to be a simple and highly effective solution, applicable for any grid-connected PV inverter systems. The DC link sensing study then investigates a control-based solution in which the dc injection is firstly accurately determined via extraction of the line frequency component from the DC link current and then mitigated with a closed loop. With an output current reconstruction process, this technique provides robust current control and effective DC suppression based on DC link current measurement, eliminating the need for the conventional output current sensor. Results from rated simulation models and a laboratory grid-connected inverter system are presented to demonstrate the accurate and robust performance of the proposed techniques. This thesis makes a positive contribution in the area of power quality control in grid-connected inverters, specifically mitigating the impact of DC injection into the grid which has influences on the network operating conditions and the design and manufacture of the PV power converter itsel

    DC-DC power converters play an important role in powering telecom and computing systems. With the speed improvement and cost reduction of digital control, digital controller is becoming a trend for DC-DC converters in addition to existed digital monitoring and management technology. In this thesis, digital control is investigated for DC-DC converters applications. To deeply understand the whole control systems, DC-DC converter models are investigated based on averaged state-space modeling. Considering half-bridge isolated DC-DC converter with a current doublers rectifier has advantages over other topologies especially in the application of low-voltage and high-current DC-DC converters, the thesis take it as an example for digital control modeling and implementation. In Chapter 2, unified steady-state DC models and small-signal models are developed for both symmetric and asymmetric controlled half-bridge DC-DC converters. Based on the models, digital controller design is implemented. In Chapter 3, digital modeling platforms are established based on Matlab, Digital PID design and corresponding simulation results are provided. Also some critical issues and practical requirements are discussed. In Chapter 4, a DSP-based digital controller is implemented with the TI\u27s DSP chip TMS320F2812. Related implementation methods and technologies are discussed. Finally the experimental results of a DSP-based close-loop of HB converter are provided and analyzed in Chapter 5, and thesis conclusions are given in Chapter 6

    DC Motor Synchronization Speed Controller Based on Microcontroller

    In this chapter, we report the design and fabrication of an improved speed synchronizer device in which two dc motors has been controlled on different sequences programmed by microcontroller. Depending on the programmed software, the device is used to command a rolling of machines, synchronizes the dc motors speed, and displays the result on liquid crystal display (LCD). Flash memory of the microcontroller is used to program for controlling this device where permanent memory is needed to store different parameters (codes for motor speed, LCD display, ratio control, and rotary encoder’s feedback). The present simulation gives new reliable results with better performance for the speed and direction than the earlier available synchronizers. It has been shown that the speed and direction are dependent on both the ratio setting and frequency of encoder in two dc motors speed synchronizer. It is shown that this device is applicable for controlling, monitoring, and synchronizing identical processes and can be implemented in multiple domains, from textile industry and home control applications to industrial instruments

    Predictive Duty Cycling of Radios and Cameras using Augmented Sensing in Wireless Camera Networks

    Energy efficiency dominates practically every aspect of the design of wireless camera networks (WCNs), and duty cycling of radios and cameras is an important tool for achieving high energy efficiencies. However, duty cycling in WCNs is made complex by the camera nodes having to anticipate the arrival of the objects in their field-of-view. What adds to this complexity is the fact that radio duty cycling and camera duty cycling are tightly coupled notions in WCNs. Abstract In this dissertation, we present a predictive framework to provide camera nodes with an ability to anticipate the arrival of an object in the field-of-view of their cameras. This allows a predictive adaption of network parameters simultaneously in multiple layers. Such anticipatory approach is made possible by enabling each camera node in the network to track an object beyond its direct sensing range and to adapt network parameters in multiple layers before the arrival of the object in its sensing range. The proposed framework exploits a single spare bit in the MAC header of the 802.15.4 protocol for creating this beyond-the-sensing-rage capability for the camera nodes. In this manner, our proposed approach for notifying the nodes about the current state of the object location entails no additional communication overhead. Our experimental evaluations based on large-scale simulations as well as an Imote2-based wireless camera network demonstrate that the proposed predictive adaptation approach, while providing comparable application-level performance, significantly reduces energy consumption compared to the approaches addressing only a single layer adaptation or those with reactive adaptation

Based on the input power generated by the wind or solar cell, the grid power is maintain the constant AC supply. The maximum power point tracking (MPPT) techniques are employed in the source side, the source voltage are fed to the controller, based on the source voltage the controller adjusts the duty cycle of boost chopper switches. This boost DC voltage are given as an input for single phase inverter, hence the grid power is maintain constant.
