An intelligent decision support system for digital preservation

This paper describes a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) based on Web services technology designed to assist cultural heritage institutions in the implementation of migration based preservation interventions. The proposed SOA delivers a recommendation service and a method to carry out complex format migrations. The recommendation service is supported by three evaluation components that assess the quality of every migration intervention in terms of its performance (Migration Broker), suitability of involved formats (Format Evaluator) and data loss (Object Evaluator). Throughout the paper the whole workflow between these three components is explained in detail as well as the most relevant tasks that are carried out internally in each of them. The proposed system is also able to produce preservation metadata that can be used by client institutions to document preservation interventions and retain objectsâ authenticity. Although the primary goal of this SOA is the implementation of migration based preservation interventions, it can also be used for other purposes such as comparing file formats or evaluating the performance of conversion applications.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT

"Are You Ready to Create Digital Records that Last?": Preparing users to transfer records to a digital repository for permanent preservation (article)

Simon Fraser University (Vancouver, Canada) marked its 50th anniversary by launching a digital repository to permanently preserve the university’s digital records of archival value. Simultaneously, the records management program launched a digital readiness project to educate departments about how to create digital records that will stand the test of time. This case study focuses on the training component of the project and details how the university is addressing knowledge gaps among records creators around digital records issues by creating training materials that are openly licensed and may be freely reused. Open educational resources or “OERs” are part of a wider open access movement in education. OERs can be created to address digital records issues and then shared with other institutions that are facing similar challenges in training their users on how to create and maintain good digital records. This article explains the efforts of one university to prepare records creators for a future of digital records preservation

    APSR Sustainability Issues Discussion Paper

    No full text
This paper was initially envisaged as a higher level document intended for the steering committee through the executive officer. However, the formation of the expert committee at the December steering committee meeting suggests that a task based document would be more appropriate for that forum, referred to them by the steering committee. The final outcome of the process for which this discussion paper was written is a task based plan that will support the APSR aim of elucidating the critical issues of the access continuity and the sustainability of digital collections. It may be utilised to fulfil the requirement of an issues and strategy paper as outlined in Milestone 1 in the APSR Project Specification 12 February 2004

The Wiltshire and Swindon Record Office has nearly ninety thousand wills in its care. These records are neither adequately catalogued nor secured against loss by facsimile microfilm copies. With support from the Heritage Lottery Fund the Record Office has begun to produce suitable finding aids for the material. Beginning with this feasibility study the Record Office is developing a strategy to ensure the that facsimiles to protect the collection against risk of loss or damage and to improve public access are created.

This feasibility study explores the different methodologies that can be used to assist the preservation and conservation of the collection and improve public access to it. The study aims to produce a strategy that will enable the Record Office to create digital facsimiles of the Wills in its care for access purposes and to also create preservation quality microfilms. The strategy aims to seek the most cost effective and time efficient approach to the problem and identifies ways to optimise the processes by drawing on the experience of other similar projects. This report provides a set of guidelines and recommendations to ensure the best use of the resources available for to provide the most robust preservation strategy and to ensure that future access to the Wills as an information resource can be flexible, both local and remote, and sustainable
