    Architecture of a network-in-the-Loop environment for characterizing AC power system behavior

    This paper describes the method by which a large hardware-in-the-loop environment has been realized for three-phase ac power systems. The environment allows an entire laboratory power-network topology (generators, loads, controls, protection devices, and switches) to be placed in the loop of a large power-network simulation. The system is realized by using a realtime power-network simulator, which interacts with the hardware via the indirect control of a large synchronous generator and by measuring currents flowing from its terminals. These measured currents are injected into the simulation via current sources to close the loop. This paper describes the system architecture and, most importantly, the calibration methodologies which have been developed to overcome measurement and loop latencies. In particular, a new "phase advance" calibration removes the requirement to add unwanted components into the simulated network to compensate for loop delay. The results of early commissioning experiments are demonstrated. The present system performance limits under transient conditions (approximately 0.25 Hz/s and 30 V/s to contain peak phase-and voltage-tracking errors within 5. and 1%) are defined mainly by the controllability of the synchronous generator

    Brain-Switches for Asynchronous Brain−Computer Interfaces: A Systematic Review

    A brain–computer interface (BCI) has been extensively studied to develop a novel communication system for disabled people using their brain activities. An asynchronous BCI system is more realistic and practical than a synchronous BCI system, in that, BCI commands can be generated whenever the user wants. However, the relatively low performance of an asynchronous BCI system is problematic because redundant BCI commands are required to correct false-positive operations. To significantly reduce the number of false-positive operations of an asynchronous BCI system, a two-step approach has been proposed using a brain-switch that first determines whether the user wants to use an asynchronous BCI system before the operation of the asynchronous BCI system. This study presents a systematic review of the state-of-the-art brain-switch techniques and future research directions.     Accuracy and Reliability Improvement of Wide-Area Power Grid Monitoring

    Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) is one of the key elements of wide area measurement systems (WAMS) in advanced power system monitoring, protection, and control applications. Frequency Disturbance Recorder (FDR) developed by the Power IT Laboratory at the University of Tennessee, is a low-cost and single-phase PMU used at the distribution level. Traditional PMUs use GPS as the only timing source. They will stop working when GPS signal is lost or unstable. Two alternative GPS independent timing sources including eLoran and Chip Scale Atomic Clock were tested for long-term reliability and short-term accuracy to study the application of the two methods in synchrophasor measurement area. Phasor measurement accuracy is of great concern for power grid researchers and operators. The hardware and software measurement algorithm of the FDRs were analyzed to study the error sources. The hardware of the FDRs was upgraded based on the analysis to improve measurement accuracy. Further, two different phasor measurement algorithms that are based on discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) and signal model will be introduced, respectively. The aim is to improve the phasor measurement accuracy under different steady-state and dynamic conditions as well as in a real power grid environment at the distribution level. Moreover, to better evaluate the measurement accuracy of PMUs, a PMU testing system was built. A calibration method that can compensate the time delay of the PMU testing system was proposed, and the testing results were compared to NIST to verify the accuracy of the PMU testing system after calibration. At last, a concept of “Universal Grid Analyzer” (UGA) was proposed and a prototype was built. The UGA has improved phasor measurement accuracy thanks to the proposed adaptive high-accuracy synchronous sampling algorithm and high-precision ADC. Meanwhile, the UGA can also function as a synchronized power quality analyzer that has harmonics measurement, voltage sag and swell detection functions. Moreover, the noise analysis function of the UGA that can help the analysis of phasor measurement accuracy in a real power grid environment was developed

    An Improved Sideband Current Harmonic Model of Interior PMSM Drive by Considering Magnetic Saturation and Cross-Coupling Effects

    The sideband current harmonics, as parasitic characteristics in permanent-magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) drives with space vector pulsewidth modulation technique, will increase the corresponding electromagnetic loss, torque ripple, vibration, and acoustic noises. Therefore, fast yet accurate evaluation of the resultant sideband current harmonic components is of particular importance during the design stage of the drive system. However, the inevitable magnetic saturation and cross-coupling effects in interior PMSM drives would have a significant impact on the current components, while the existing analytical sideband current harmonic model neglects those effects. This paper introduces a significant improvement on the analytical model by taking into account these effects with corresponding nonlinear factors. Experimental results are carried out to underpin the accuracy improvements of the predictions from the proposed model over the existing analytical one. The proposed model can offer a very detailed and insightful revelation of impacts of the magnetic saturation and cross-coupling effects on the corresponding sideband current harmonics

    Asynchronous displays for multi-UV search tasks

    Synchronous video has long been the preferred mode for controlling remote robots with other modes such as asynchronous control only used when unavoidable as in the case of interplanetary robotics. We identify two basic problems for controlling multiple robots using synchronous displays: operator overload and information fusion. Synchronous displays from multiple robots can easily overwhelm an operator who must search video for targets. If targets are plentiful, the operator will likely miss targets that enter and leave unattended views while dealing with others that were noticed. The related fusion problem arises because robots' multiple fields of view may overlap forcing the operator to reconcile different views from different perspectives and form an awareness of the environment by "piecing them together". We have conducted a series of experiments investigating the suitability of asynchronous displays for multi-UV search. Our first experiments involved static panoramas in which operators selected locations at which robots halted and panned their camera to capture a record of what could be seen from that location. A subsequent experiment investigated the hypothesis that the relative performance of the panoramic display would improve as the number of robots was increased causing greater overload and fusion problems. In a subsequent Image Queue system we used automated path planning and also automated the selection of imagery for presentation by choosing a greedy selection of non-overlapping views. A fourth set of experiments used the SUAVE display, an asynchronous variant of the picture-in-picture technique for video from multiple UAVs. The panoramic displays which addressed only the overload problem led to performance similar to synchronous video while the Image Queue and SUAVE displays which addressed fusion as well led to improved performance on a number of measures. In this paper we will review our experiences in designing and testing asynchronous displays and discuss challenges to their use including tracking dynamic targets. © 2012 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc
