    A hybrid algorithm for flexible job-shop scheduling problem with setup times

    [EN] Job-shop scheduling problem is one of the most important fields in manufacturing optimization where a set of n jobs must be processed on a set of m specified machines. Each job consists of a specific set of operations, which have to be processed according to a given order. The Flexible Job Shop problem (FJSP) is a generalization of the above-mentioned problem, where each operation can be processed by a set of resources and has a processing time depending on the resource used. The FJSP problems cover two difficulties, namely, machine assignment problem and operation sequencing problem. This paper addresses the flexible job-shop scheduling problem with sequence-dependent setup times to minimize two kinds of objectives function: makespan and bi-criteria objective function. For that, we propose a hybrid algorithm based on genetic algorithm (GA) and variable neighbourhood search (VNS) to solve this problem. To evaluate the performance of our algorithm, we compare our results with other methods existing in literature.     A research survey: review of flexible job shop scheduling techniques

    In the last 25 years, extensive research has been carried out addressing the flexible job shop scheduling (JSS) problem. A variety of techniques ranging from exact methods to hybrid techniques have been used in this research. The paper aims at presenting the development of flexible JSS and a consolidated survey of various techniques that have been employed since 1990 for problem resolution. The paper comprises evaluation of publications and research methods used in various research papers. Finally, conclusions are drawn based on performed survey results. A total of 404 distinct publications were found addressing the FJSSP. Some of the research papers presented more than one technique/algorithm to solve the problem that is categorized into 410 different applications. Selected time period of these research papers is between 1990 and February 2014. Articles were searched mainly on major databases such as SpringerLink, Science Direct, IEEE Xplore, Scopus, EBSCO, etc. and other web sources.     Multi-Objective Flexible Job Shop Scheduling Using Genetic Algorithms

    Flexible Job Shop Scheduling is an important problem in the fields of combinatorial optimization and production management. This research addresses multi-objective flexible job shop scheduling problem with the objective of simultaneous minimization of: (1) makespan, (2) workload of the most loaded machine, and (3) total workload. A general-purpose, domain independent genetic algorithm implemented in a spreadsheet environment is proposed for the flexible job shop. Spreadsheet functions are used to develop the shop model. Performance of the proposed algorithm is compared with heuristic algorithms already reported in the literature. Simulation experiments demonstrated that the proposed methodology can achieve solutions that are comparable to previous approaches in terms of solution quality and computational time. Flexible job shop models presented herein are easily customizable to cater for different objective functions without changing the basic genetic algorithm routine or the spreadsheet model. Experimental analysis demonstrates the robustness, simplicity, and general-purpose nature of the proposed approach

    An improved memetic algorithm to solve the energy-efficient distributed flexible job shop scheduling problem with transportation and start-stop constraints

    In the current global cooperative production environment, modern industries are confronted with intricate production plans, demanding the adoption of contemporary production scheduling strategies. Within this context, distributed manufacturing has emerged as a prominent trend. Manufacturing enterprises, especially those engaged in activities like automotive mold production and welding, are facing a significant challenge in managing a significant amount of small-scale tasks characterized by short processing times. In this situation, it becomes imperative to consider the transportation time of jobs between machines. This paper simultaneously considers the transportation time of jobs between machines and the start-stop operation of the machines, which is the first time to our knowledge. An improved memetic algorithm (IMA) is proposed to solve the multi-objective distributed flexible job shop scheduling problem (MODFJSP) with the goal of minimizing maximum completion time and energy consumption. Then, a new multi-start simulated annealing algorithm is proposed and integrated into the IMA to improve the exploration ability and diversity of the algorithm. Furthermore, a new multiple-initialization rule is designed to enhance the quality of the initial population. Additionally, four improved variable neighborhood search strategies and two energy-saving strategies are designed to enhance the search ability and reduce energy consumption. To verify the effectiveness of the IMA, we conducted extensive testing and comprehensive evaluation on 20 instances. The results indicate that, when faced with the MODFJSP, the IMA can achieve better solutions in almost all instances, which is of great significance for the improvement of production scheduling in intelligent manufacturing

    Integrating sustainability into production scheduling in hybrid flow-shop environments

    Global energy consumption is projected to grow by nearly 50% as of 2018, reaching a peak of 910.7 quadrillion BTU in 2050. The industrial sector accounts for the largest share of the energy consumed, making energy awareness on the shop foors imperative for promoting industrial sustainable development. Considering a growing awareness of the importance of sustainability, production planning and control require the incorporation of time-of-use electricity pricing models into scheduling problems for well-informed energy-saving decisions. Besides, modern manufacturing emphasizes the role of human factors in production processes. This study proposes a new approach for optimizing the hybrid fow-shop scheduling problems (HFSP) considering time-of-use electricity pricing, workers’ fexibility, and sequence-dependent setup time (SDST). Novelties of this study are twofold: to extend a new mathematical formulation and to develop an improved multi-objective optimization algorithm. Extensive numerical experiments are conducted to evaluate the performance of the developed solution method, the adjusted multi-objective genetic algorithm (AMOGA), comparing it with the state-of-the-art, i.e., strength Pareto evolutionary algorithm (SPEA2), and Pareto envelop-based selection algorithm (PESA2). It is shown that AMOGA performs better than the benchmarks considering the mean ideal distance, inverted generational distance, diversifcation, and quality metrics, providing more versatile and better solutions for production and energy efciency

    Evolutionary algorithms for multi-objective flexible job shop cell scheduling

    The multi-objective flexible job shop scheduling in a cellular manufacturing environment is a challenging real-world problem. This recently introduced scheduling problem variant considers exceptional parts, intercellular moves, intercellular transportation times, sequence-dependent family setup times, and recirculation requiring minimization of makespan and total tardiness, simultaneously. A previous study shows that the exact solver based on mixed-integer nonlinear programming model fails to find an optimal solution to each of the ‘medium’ to ‘large’ size instances considering even the simplified version of the problem. In this study, we present evolutionary algorithms for solving that bi-objective problem and apply genetic and memetic algorithms that use three different scalarization methods, including weighted sum, conic, and tchebycheff. The performance of all evolutionary algorithms with various configurations is investigated across forty-three benchmark instances from ‘small’ to ‘large’ size including a large real-world problem instance. The experimental results show that the transgenerational memetic algorithm using weighted sum outperforms the rest producing the best-known results for almost all bi-objective flexible job shop cell scheduling instances, in overall
