    Deep ROC Analysis and AUC as Balanced Average Accuracy to Improve Model Selection, Understanding and Interpretation

    Optimal performance is critical for decision-making tasks from medicine to autonomous driving, however common performance measures may be too general or too specific. For binary classifiers, diagnostic tests or prognosis at a timepoint, measures such as the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, or the area under the precision recall curve, are too general because they include unrealistic decision thresholds. On the other hand, measures such as accuracy, sensitivity or the F1 score are measures at a single threshold that reflect an individual single probability or predicted risk, rather than a range of individuals or risk. We propose a method in between, deep ROC analysis, that examines groups of probabilities or predicted risks for more insightful analysis. We translate esoteric measures into familiar terms: AUC and the normalized concordant partial AUC are balanced average accuracy (a new finding); the normalized partial AUC is average sensitivity; and the normalized horizontal partial AUC is average specificity. Along with post-test measures, we provide a method that can improve model selection in some cases and provide interpretation and assurance for patients in each risk group.     Physical Activity Recognition Based on a Parallel Approach for an Ensemble of Machine Learning and Deep Learning Classifiers

    Human activity recognition (HAR) by wearable sensor devices embedded in the Internet of things (IOT) can play a significant role in remote health monitoring and emergency notification, to provide healthcare of higher standards. The purpose of this study is to investigate a human activity recognition method of accrued decision accuracy and speed of execution to be applicable in healthcare. This method classifies wearable sensor acceleration time series data of human movement using efficient classifier combination of feature engineering-based and feature learning-based data representation. Leave-one-subject-out cross-validation of the method with data acquired from 44 subjects wearing a single waist-worn accelerometer on a smart textile, and engaged in a variety of 10 activities, yields an average recognition rate of 90%, performing significantly better than individual classifiers.     Ship Detection And Tracking In Inland Waterways Using Improved Yolov3 And Deep Sort

    Ship detection and tracking is an important task in video surveillance in inland waterways. However, ships in inland navigation are faced with accidents such as collisions. For collision avoidance, we should strengthen the monitoring of navigation and the robustness of the entire system. Hence, this paper presents ship detection and tracking of ships using the improved You Only Look Once version 3 (YOLOv3) detection algorithm and Deep Simple Online and Real-time Tracking (Deep SORT) tracking algorithm. Three improvements are made to the YOLOv3 target detection algorithm. Firstly, the Kmeans clustering algorithm is used to optimize the initial value of the anchor frame to make it more suitable for ship application scenarios. Secondly, the output classifier is modified to a single SoftMax classifier to suit our ship dataset which has three ship categories and mutual exclusion. Finally, Soft Non-Maximum Suppression (Soft-NMS) is introduced to solve the deficiencies of the Non-Maximum Suppression (NMS) algorithm when screening candidate frames. Results showed the mean Average Precision (mAP) and Frame Per Second (FPS) of the improved algorithm are increased by about 5% and 2, respectively, compared with the existing YOLOv3 detecting Algorithm. Then the improved YOLOv3 is applied in Deep Sort and the performance result of Deep Sort showed that, it has greater performance in complex scenes, and is robust to interference such as occlusion and camera movement, compared to state of art algorithms such as KCF, MIL, MOSSE, TLD, and Median Flow. With this improvement, it will help in the safety of inland navigation and protection from collisions and accidents

    Holistic interpretation of visual data based on topology:semantic segmentation of architectural facades

    The work presented in this dissertation is a step towards effectively incorporating contextual knowledge in the task of semantic segmentation. To date, the use of context has been confined to the genre of the scene with a few exceptions in the field. Research has been directed towards enhancing appearance descriptors. While this is unarguably important, recent studies show that computer vision has reached a near-human level of performance in relying on these descriptors when objects have stable distinctive surface properties and in proper imaging conditions. When these conditions are not met, humans exploit their knowledge about the intrinsic geometric layout of the scene to make local decisions. Computer vision lags behind when it comes to this asset. For this reason, we aim to bridge the gap by presenting algorithms for semantic segmentation of building facades making use of scene topological aspects. We provide a classification scheme to carry out segmentation and recognition simultaneously.The algorithm is able to solve a single optimization function and yield a semantic interpretation of facades, relying on the modeling power of probabilistic graphs and efficient discrete combinatorial optimization tools. We tackle the same problem of semantic facade segmentation with the neural network approach.We attain accuracy figures that are on-par with the state-of-the-art in a fully automated pipeline.Starting from pixelwise classifications obtained via Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN). These are then structurally validated through a cascade of Restricted Boltzmann Machines (RBM) and Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) that regenerates the most likely layout. In the domain of architectural modeling, there is geometric multi-model fitting. We introduce a novel guided sampling algorithm based on Minimum Spanning Trees (MST), which surpasses other propagation techniques in terms of robustness to noise. We make a number of additional contributions such as measure of model deviation which captures variations among fitted models
