Hysteresis Current Control Operation of Flying Capacitor Multilevel Inverter and Its Application in Shunt Compensation of Distribution Systems
Flying capacitor multilevel inverter (FCMLI) is a multiple voltage level inverter topology intended for high voltage and power operations with low distortion. It uses capacitors, called flying capacitors for clamping the voltage across the power semiconductor devices. In this paper, the implementation of a distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) using an FCMLI is presented. A hysteresis current control technique for controlling the injected current by the FCMLI-based DSTATCOM is discussed. A new method for controlling the flying capacitor voltages is proposed which ensures that their voltages remain constant and at the same time maintain the desired current profile under the hysteresis current control operation. Simulation studies are performed using PSCAD/EMTDC to validate the efficacy of the control scheme and the FCMLI-based DSTATCOM
One-Quadrant Switched-Mode Power Converters
This article presents the main topics related to one-quadrant power
converters. The basic topologies are analysed and a simple methodology to
obtain the steady-state output-input voltage ratio is set out. A short
discussion of different methods to control one-quadrant power converters is
presented. Some of the reported derived topologies of one-quadrant power
converters are also considered. Some topics related to one-quadrant power
converters such as synchronous rectification, hard and soft commutation, and
interleaved converters are discussed. Finally, a brief introduction to resonant

Improved control strategy of DFIG-based wind turbines using direct torque and direct power control techniques
This paper presents different control strategies for a variable-speed wind energy conversion system (WECS), based on a doubly fed induction generator. Direct Torque Control (DTC) with Space-Vector Modulation is used on the rotor side converter. This control method is known to reduce the fluctuations of the torque and flux at low speeds in contrast to the classical DTC, where the frequency of switching is uncontrollable. The reference for torque is obtained from the maximum power point tracking technique of the wind turbine. For the grid-side converter, a fuzzy direct power control is proposed for the control of the instantaneous active and reactive power. Simulation results of the WECS are presented to compare the performance of the proposed and classical control approaches.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio
Neuro-fuzzy chip to handle complex tasks with analog performance
This paper presents a mixed-signal neuro-fuzzy controller chip which, in terms of power consumption, input–output delay, and precision, performs as a fully analog implementation.
However, it has much larger complexity than its purely analog counterparts. This combination of performance and complexity is achieved through the use of a mixed-signal architecture consisting
of a programmable analog core of reduced complexity, and a strategy, and the associated mixed-signal circuitry, to cover the whole input space through the dynamic programming of this core.
Since errors and delays are proportional to the reduced number of fuzzy rules included in the analog core, they are much smaller than in the case where the whole rule set is implemented by analog circuitry. Also, the area and the power consumption of the new architecture
are smaller than those of its purely analog counterparts simply because most rules are implemented through programming.
The Paper presents a set of building blocks associated to this architecture, and gives results for an exemplary prototype.
This prototype, called multiplexing fuzzy controller (MFCON), has been realized in a CMOS 0.7 um standard technology. It has
two inputs, implements 64 rules, and features 500 ns of input to output delay with 16-mW of power consumption. Results from the chip in a control application with a dc motor are also provided
