    Design of asynchronous microprocessor for power proportionality

    PhD ThesisMicroprocessors continue to get exponentially cheaper for end users following Moore’s law, while the costs involved in their design keep growing, also at an exponential rate. The reason is the ever increasing complexity of processors, which modern EDA tools struggle to keep up with. This makes further scaling for performance subject to a high risk in the reliability of the system. To keep this risk low, yet improve the performance, CPU designers try to optimise various parts of the processor. Instruction Set Architecture (ISA) is a significant part of the whole processor design flow, whose optimal design for a particular combination of available hardware resources and software requirements is crucial for building processors with high performance and efficient energy utilisation. This is a challenging task involving a lot of heuristics and high-level design decisions. Another issue impacting CPU reliability is continuous scaling for power consumption. For the last decades CPU designers have been mainly focused on improving performance, but “keeping energy and power consumption in mind”. The consequence of this was a development of energy-efficient systems, where energy was considered as a resource whose consumption should be optimised. As CMOS technology was progressing, with feature size decreasing and power delivered to circuit components becoming less stable, the energy resource turned from an optimisation criterion into a constraint, sometimes a critical one. At this point power proportionality becomes one of the most important aspects in system design. Developing methods and techniques which will address the problem of designing a power-proportional microprocessor, capable to adapt to varying operating conditions (such as low or even unstable voltage levels) and application requirements in the runtime, is one of today’s grand challenges. In this thesis this challenge is addressed by proposing a new design flow for the development of an ISA for microprocessors, which can be altered to suit a particular hardware platform or a specific operating mode. This flow uses an expressive and powerful formalism for the specification of processor instruction sets called the Conditional Partial Order Graph (CPOG). The CPOG model captures large sets of behavioural scenarios for a microarchitectural level in a computationally efficient form amenable to formal transformations for synthesis, verification and automated derivation of asynchronous hardware for the CPU microcontrol. The feasibility of the methodology, novel design flow and a number of optimisation techniques was proven in a full size asynchronous Intel 8051 microprocessor and its demonstrator silicon. The chip showed the ability to work in a wide range of operating voltage and environmental conditions. Depending on application requirements and power budget our ASIC supports several operating modes: one optimised for energy consumption and the other one for performance. This was achieved by extending a traditional datapath structure with an auxiliary control layer for adaptable and fault tolerant operation. These and other optimisations resulted in a reconfigurable and adaptable implementation, which was proven by measurements, analysis and evaluation of the chip.EPSR

    Power Efficient High Temperature Asynchronous Microcontroller Design

    There is an increasing demand for dependable and efficient digital circuitry capable of operating in high temperature environments. Extreme temperatures have adverse effects on traditional silicon synchronous systems because of the changes in delay and setup and hold times caused by the variances in each device’s threshold voltage. This dissertation focuses on the design of the major functionality of an asynchronous 8051 microcontroller in Raytheon’s high temperature Silicon Carbide process, rated for operation over 300ºC. The microcontroller is designed in NULL Convention Logic, for which the traditional bus architecture used for data transfer would consume a large amount of power. To make the design more power efficient, the bus architecture has been replaced with a more complex yet efficient MUX-based data transfer scheme. This change in the design architecture also allows for improved internal data transfer rates leading to an increase in overall circuit performance. Simulation results show that the designed Silicon Carbide microcontroller framework successful executes 8051 ISA instructions. Results from the MUX-based architecture show an overall decrease in power consumption of over two orders of magnitude when compared with its bus architecture counterpart. Also, the increased internal data transfer rates resulted in an overall performance improvement of 22.8%

    Ultra-low Voltage Digital Circuits and Extreme Temperature Electronics Design

    Certain applications require digital electronics to operate under extreme conditions e.g., large swings in ambient temperature, very low supply voltage, high radiation. Such applications include sensor networks, wearable electronics, unmanned aerial vehicles, spacecraft, and energyharvesting systems. This dissertation splits into two projects that study digital electronics supplied by ultra-low voltages and build an electronic system for extreme temperatures. The first project introduces techniques that improve circuit reliability at deep subthreshold voltages as well as determine the minimum required supply voltage. These techniques address digital electronic design at several levels: the physical process, gate design, and system architecture. This dissertation analyzes a silicon-on-insulator process, Schmitt-trigger gate design, and asynchronous logic at supply voltages lower than 100 millivolts. The second project describes construction of a sensor digital controller for the lunar environment. Parts of the digital controller are an asynchronous 8031 microprocessor that is compatible with synchronous logic, memory with error detection and correction, and a robust network interface. The digitial sensor ASIC is fabricated on a silicon-germanium process and built with cells optimized for extreme temperatures

    Average-case analysis of power consumption in embedded systems

    Power efficiency is one of the most important constraints in the design of embedded systems since such systems are generally driven by batteries with limited energy budget or restricted power supply. In every embedded system, there are one or more processor cores to run the software and interact with the other hardware components of the system. The power consumption of the processor core(s) has an important impact on the total power dissipated in the system. Hence, the processor power optimization is crucial in satisfying the power consumption constraints, and developing low-power embedded systems. A key aspect of research in processor power optimization and management is “power estimation”. Having a fast and accurate method for processor power estimation at design time helps the designer to explore a large space of design possibilities, to make the optimal choices for developing a power efficient processor. Likewise, understanding the processor power dissipation behaviour of a specific software/application is the key for choosing appropriate algorithms in order to write power efficient software. Simulation-based methods for measuring the processor power achieve very high accuracy, but are available only late in the design process, and are often quite slow. Therefore, the need has arisen for faster, higher-level power prediction methods that allow the system designer to explore many alternatives for developing powerefficient hardware and software. The aim of this thesis is to present fast and high-level power models for the prediction of processor power consumption. Power predictability in this work is achieved in two ways: first, using a design method to develop power predictable circuits; second, analysing the power of the functions in the code which repeat during execution, then building the power model based on average number of repetitions. In the first case, a design method called Asynchronous Charge Sharing Logic (ACSL) is used to implement the Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) for the 8051 microcontroller. The ACSL circuits are power predictable due to the independency of their power consumption to the input data. Based on this property, a fast prediction method is presented to estimate the power of ALU by analysing the software program, and extracting the number of ALU-related instructions. This method achieves less than 1% error in power estimation and more than 100 times speedup in comparison to conventional simulation-based methods. In the second case, an average-case processor energy model is developed for the Insertion sort algorithm based on the number of comparisons that take place in the execution of the algorithm. The average number of comparisons is calculated using a high level methodology called MOdular Quantitative Analysis (MOQA). The parameters of the energy model are measured for the LEON3 processor core, but the model is general and can be used for any processor. The model has been validated through the power measurement experiments, and offers high accuracy and orders of magnitude speedup over the simulation-based method

    We describe the Lutonium, an asynchronous 8051 microcontroller designed for low Et/sup 2/. In 0.18 /spl mu/m CMOS, at nominal 1.8 V, we expect a performance of 0.5 nJ per instruction at 200 MIPS. At 0.5 V, we expect 4 MIPS and 40 pJ/instruction, corresponding to 25,000 MIPS/Watt. We describe the structure of a fine-grain pipeline optimized for Et/sup 2/ efficiency, some of the peripherals implementation, and the advantages of an asynchronous implementation of a deep-sleep mechanism

    Low-Power Wireless Distributed SIMD Architecture Concept: An 8051 Based Remote Execution Unit

    Power has become a critical aspect in the design of modern wireless systems, especially in passive device nodes such as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags, sensor nodes etc. Passive RFID tags in particular use simple logic that is used to respond with a unique code or data to identify objects when queried by an interrogator, whereas wireless passive sensor devices use microcontrollers for sensor data processing. There is a need for a Minimal Instruction Set Architecture (MISA) for such passive nodes with regard to low power. In this context, passive node capabilities need to be explored, possibly to suit target applications, in order to enable more than just identification and perhaps less than those of a conventional microcontroller Instruction Set Architecture (ISA). This dissertation research demonstrates a low-power wireless distributed processor architecture concept. The data and program instructions are stored on a powered interrogator providing wireless supervisory control for the remote passive node that has a basic processing core called the remote execution unit (REU). The interrogator and the passive node (REU) combination can be viewed as a complete processor or as multiple processing units forming the basis for a wireless distributed Single Instruction Multiple Data (SIMD) processor. This research introduces and investigates the REU architecture using an 8051-MISA with the goal of reducing power consumption of the system. A novel low power data-driven symbol decoder-CRC along with the 8051-MISA based execution core design form the frontend and core part of the REU architecture. Clocked and asynchronous digital logic implementations of the REU core design are presented and correspondingly the power, area and speed comparisons are also provided. Lack of strong support by commercial CAD tools is a major hurdle for synthesis of asynchronous designs. This research also presents a high-level design flow used to implement the asynchronous logic for the REU using traditional clocked CAD flows. This research work demonstrates immense potential to realize low power wireless passive sensor nodes for biomedical, automation, environmental, etc., applications especially while providing the basis for a programmable passive remote unit for distributed processing
