Blind recovery of k/n rate convolutional encoders in a noisy environment
http://jwcn.eurasipjournals.com/content/2011/1/168International audienceIn order to enhance the reliability of digital transmissions, error correcting codes are used in every digital communication system. To meet the new constraints of data rate or reliability, new coding schemes are currently being developed. Therefore, digital communication systems are in perpetual evolution and it is becoming very difficult to remain compatible with all standards used. A cognitive radio system seems to provide an interesting solution to this problem: the conception of an intelligent receiver able to adapt itself to a specific transmission context. This article presents a new algorithm dedicated to the blind recognition of convolutional encoders in the general k/n rate case. After a brief recall of convolutional code and dual code properties, a new iterative method dedicated to the blind estimation of convolutional encoders in a noisy context is developed. Finally, case studies are presented to illustrate the performances of our blind identification method
Analysis and Performance Comparison of DVB-T and DTMB Systems for Terrestrial Digital TV
Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) is the most popular
transmission technology in digital terrestrial broadcasting (DTTB), adopted by
many DTTB standards. In this paper, the bit error rate (BER) performance of two
DTTB systems, namely cyclic prefix OFDM (CP-OFDM) based DVB-T and time domain
synchronous OFDM (TDS-OFDM) based DTMB, is evaluated in different channel
conditions. Spectrum utilization and power efficiency are also discussed to
demonstrate the transmission overhead of both systems. Simulation results show
that the performances of the two systems are much close. Given the same ratio
of guard interval (GI), the DVB-T outperforms DTMB in terms of signal to noise
ratio (SNR) in Gaussian and Ricean channels, while DTMB behaves better
performance in Rayleigh channel in higher code rates and higher orders of
constellation thanks to its efficient channel coding and interleaving scheme
Performance Analysis of Iterative Channel Estimation and Multiuser Detection in Multipath DS-CDMA Channels
This paper examines the performance of decision feedback based iterative
channel estimation and multiuser detection in channel coded aperiodic DS-CDMA
systems operating over multipath fading channels. First, explicit expressions
describing the performance of channel estimation and parallel interference
cancellation based multiuser detection are developed. These results are then
combined to characterize the evolution of the performance of a system that
iterates among channel estimation, multiuser detection and channel decoding.
Sufficient conditions for convergence of this system to a unique fixed point
are developed.Comment: To appear in the IEEE Transactions on Signal Processin
Synchronization for capacity -approaching coded communication systems
The dissertation concentrates on synchronization of capacity approaching error-correction codes that are deployed in noisy channels with very low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The major topics are symbol timing synchronization and frame synchronization.;Capacity-approaching error-correction codes, like turbo codes and low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, are capable of reaching very low bit error rates and frame error rates in noisy channels by iterative decoding. To fully achieve the potential decoding capability of Turbo codes and LDPC codes, proper symbol timing synchronization, frame synchronization and channel state estimation are required. The dissertation proposes a joint estimator of symbol time delay and channel SNR for symbol timing recovery, and a maximum a posteriori (MAP) frame synchronizer for frame synchronization.;Symbol timing recovery is implemented by sampling and interpolation. The received signal is sampled multiple times per symbol period with unknown delay and unknown SNR. A joint estimator estimates the time delay and the SNR. The signal is rebuilt by interpolating available samples using estimated time delay. The intermediate decoding results enable decision-feedback estimation. The estimates of time delay and SNR are refined by iterative processing. This refinement improves the system performance significantly.;Usually the sampling rate is assumed to be a strict integer multiple of the symbol rate. However, in a practical system the local oscillators in the transmitter and the receiver may have random drifts. Therefore the sampling rate is no longer an exact multiple of the symbol rate, and the sampling time follows a random walk. This random walk may harm the system performance severely. The dissertation analyzes the effect of random time walks and proposes to mitigate the effect by overlapped sliding windows and iterative processing.;Frame synchronization is required to find the correct boundaries of codewords. MAP frame synchronization in the sense of minimizing the frame sync failure rate is investigated. The MAP frame synchronizer explores low-density parity-check attributes of the capacity-approaching codes. The accuracy of frame synchronization is adequate for considered coded systems to work reliably under very low SNR
