An adaptive envelope analysis in a wireless sensor network for bearing fault diagnosis using fast kurtogram algorithm

    Get PDF
This paper proposes a scheme to improve the performance of applying envelope analysis in a wireless sensor network for bearing fault diagnosis. The fast kurtogram is realized on the host computer for determining an optimum band-pass filter for the envelope analysis that is implemented on the wireless sensor node to extract the low frequency fault information. Therefore, the vibration signal can be monitored over the bandwidth limited wireless sensor network with both intelligence and real-time performance. Test results have proved that the diagnostic information for different bearing faults can be successfully extracted using the optimum band-pass filter

Principal component analysis (PCA) is a powerful data reductionmethod for Structural Health Monitoring. However, its computa-tional cost and data memory footprint pose a significant challengewhen PCA has to run on limited capability embedded platformsin low-cost IoT gateways. This paper presents a memory-efficientparallel implementation of the streaming History PCA algorithm. On our dataset, it achieves 10x compression factor and 59x memoryreduction with less than 0.15 dB degradation in the reconstructedsignal-to-noise ratio (RSNR) compared to standard PCA. More-over, the algorithm benefits from parallelization on multiple cores, achieving a maximum speedup of 4.8x on Samsung ARTIK 710

Structural health monitoring of wind turbine blades: acoustic source localization using wireless sensor networks

Structural health monitoring (SHM) is important for reducing the maintenance and operation cost of safety-critical components and systems in offshore wind turbines. This paper proposes an in situ wireless SHM system based on an acoustic emission (AE) technique. By using this technique a number of challenges are introduced due to high sampling rate requirements, limitations in the communication bandwidth, memory space, and power resources. To overcome these challenges, this paper focused on two elements: (1) the use of an in situ wireless SHM technique in conjunction with the utilization of low sampling rates; (2) localization of acoustic sources which could emulate impact damage or audible cracks caused by different objects, such as tools, bird strikes, or strong hail, all of which represent abrupt AE events and could affect the structural health of a monitored wind turbine blade. The localization process is performed using features extracted from aliased AE signals based on a developed constraint localization model. To validate the performance of these elements, the proposed system was tested by testing the localization of the emulated AE sources acquired in the field

Fault Detection In Wireless Sensor Network Using Distributed Approach

    Get PDF
In recent days, Wireless Sensor Networks are emerging as a promising and interesting area. Wireless Sensor Network consists of a large number of heterogeneous/homogeneous sensor nodes which communicates through wireless medium and works cooperatively to sense or monitor the environment. The number of sensor nodes in a network can vary from hundreds to thousands. The node senses data from Environment and sends these data to the gateway node. Mostly WSNs are used for applications such as military surveillance and disaster monitoring. We propose a distributed localized faulty sensor detection algorithm where each sensor identifies its own status to be either ”good” or ”faulty” which is then supported by its neighbors as they also check the node behavior. Finally, the algorithm is tested under different number of faulty sensors in the same area. Our Simulation results demonstrate that the time consumed to find out the faulty nodes in our proposed algorithm is relatively less with a large number of faulty sensors existing in the network
