    Modeling and solving the multi-period inventory routing problem with constant demand rates

    The inventory routing problem (IRP) is one of the challenging optimization problems in supply chain logistics. It combines inventory control and vehicle routing optimization. The main purpose of the IRP is to determine optimal delivery times and quantities to be delivered to customers, as well as optimal vehicle routes to distribute these quantities. The IRP is an underlying logistical optimization problem for supply chains implementing vendor-managed inventory (VMI) policies, in which the supplier takes responsibility for the management of the customers' inventory. In this paper, we consider a multi-period inventory routing problem assuming constant demand rates (MP-CIRP). The proposed model is formulated as a linear mixed-integer program and solved with a Lagrangian relaxation method. The solution obtained by the Lagrangian relaxation method is then used to generate a close to optimal feasible solution of the MP-CIRP by solving a series of assignment problems. The numerical experiments carried out so far show that the proposed Lagrangian relaxation approach nds quite good solutions for the MP-CIRP and in reasonable computation times

    Selection of return channels and recovery options for used products

    Due to legal, economic and socio-environmental factors, reverse logistics practices and extended producer responsibility have developed into a necessity in many countries. The end results and expectations may differ, but the motivation remains the same. Two significant components in a reverse logistics system -product recovery options and return channels - are the focus of this thesis. The two main issues examined are allocation of the returned products to recovery options, and selection of the collection methods for product returns. The initial segment of this thesis involves the formulation of a linear programming model to determine the optimal allocation of returned products differing in quality to specific recovery options. This model paves the way for a study on the effects of flexibility on product recovery allocation. A computational example utilising experimental data was presented to demonstrate the viability of the proposed model. The results revealed that in comparison to a fixed match between product qualities and recovery options, the product recovery operation appeared to be more profitable with a flexible allocation. The second segment of this thesis addresses the methods employed for the initial collection of returned products. A mixed integer nonlinear programming model was developed to facilitate the selection of optimal collection methods for these products. This integrated model takes three different initial collection methods into consideration. The model is used to solve an illustrative example optimally. However, as the complexity of the issue renders this process ineffective in the face of larger problems, the Lagrangian relaxation method was proposed to generate feasible solutions within reasonable computational times. This method was put to the test and the results were found to be encouraging

We consider the multicommodity capacitated fixed-charge network design problem (MCND), a generic model that captures three important features of network design applications: the interplay between investment and operational costs, the multicommodity aspect, and the presence of capacity constraints. We focus on mathematical programming approaches for the MCND and present three classes of methods that have been used to solve large-scale instances of the MCND: a cutting-plane method, a Benders decomposition algorithm, and Lagrangian relaxation approaches

    The two-echelon capacitated vehicle routing problem: models and math-based heuristics

    Multiechelon distribution systems are quite common in supply-chain and logistics. They are used by public administrations in their transportation and traffic planning strategies, as well as by companies, to model own distribution systems. In the literature, most of the studies address issues relating to the movement of flows throughout the system from their origins to their final destinations. Another recent trend is to focus on the management of the vehicle fleets required to provide transportation among different echelons. The aim of this paper is twofold. First, it introduces the family of two-echelon vehicle routing problems (VRPs), a term that broadly covers such settings, where the delivery from one or more depots to customers is managed by routing and consolidating freight through intermediate depots. Second, it considers in detail the basic version of two-echelon VRPs, the two-echelon capacitated VRP, which is an extension of the classical VRP in which the delivery is compulsorily delivered through intermediate depots, named satellites. A mathematical model for two-echelon capacitated VRP, some valid inequalities, and two math-heuristics based on the model are presented. Computational results of up to 50 customers and four satellites show the effectiveness of the methods developed

    An Improved Algorithm for Fixed-Hub Single Allocation Problem

    This paper discusses the fixed-hub single allocation problem (FHSAP). In this problem, a network consists of hub nodes and terminal nodes. Hubs are fixed and fully connected; each terminal node is connected to a single hub which routes all its traffic. The goal is to minimize the cost of routing the traffic in the network. In this paper, we propose a linear programming (LP)-based rounding algorithm. The algorithm is based on two ideas. First, we modify the LP relaxation formulation introduced in Ernst and Krishnamoorthy (1996, 1999) by incorporating a set of validity constraints. Then, after obtaining a fractional solution to the LP relaxation, we make use of a geometric rounding algorithm to obtain an integral solution. We show that by incorporating the validity constraints, the strengthened LP often provides much tighter upper bounds than the previous methods with a little more computational effort, and the solution obtained often has a much smaller gap with the optimal solution. We also formulate a robust version of the FHSAP and show that it can guard against data uncertainty with little cost
