    Energy management in communication networks: a journey through modelling and optimization glasses

    The widespread proliferation of Internet and wireless applications has produced a significant increase of ICT energy footprint. As a response, in the last five years, significant efforts have been undertaken to include energy-awareness into network management. Several green networking frameworks have been proposed by carefully managing the network routing and the power state of network devices. Even though approaches proposed differ based on network technologies and sleep modes of nodes and interfaces, they all aim at tailoring the active network resources to the varying traffic needs in order to minimize energy consumption. From a modeling point of view, this has several commonalities with classical network design and routing problems, even if with different objectives and in a dynamic context. With most researchers focused on addressing the complex and crucial technological aspects of green networking schemes, there has been so far little attention on understanding the modeling similarities and differences of proposed solutions. This paper fills the gap surveying the literature with optimization modeling glasses, following a tutorial approach that guides through the different components of the models with a unified symbolism. A detailed classification of the previous work based on the modeling issues included is also proposed

    Strong Nash Equilibria in Games with the Lexicographical Improvement Property

    We introduce a class of finite strategic games with the property that every deviation of a coalition of players that is profitable to each of its members strictly decreases the lexicographical order of a certain function defined on the set of strategy profiles. We call this property the Lexicographical Improvement Property (LIP) and show that it implies the existence of a generalized strong ordinal potential function. We use this characterization to derive existence, efficiency and fairness properties of strong Nash equilibria. We then study a class of games that generalizes congestion games with bottleneck objectives that we call bottleneck congestion games. We show that these games possess the LIP and thus the above mentioned properties. For bottleneck congestion games in networks, we identify cases in which the potential function associated with the LIP leads to polynomial time algorithms computing a strong Nash equilibrium. Finally, we investigate the LIP for infinite games. We show that the LIP does not imply the existence of a generalized strong ordinal potential, thus, the existence of SNE does not follow. Assuming that the function associated with the LIP is continuous, however, we prove existence of SNE. As a consequence, we prove that bottleneck congestion games with infinite strategy spaces and continuous cost functions possess a strong Nash equilibrium

    Distributed Software Router Management

    With the stunning success of the Internet, information and communication technologies diffused increasingly attracting more uses to join the the Internet arsenal which in turn accelerates the traffic growth. This growth rate does not seem to slow down in near future. Networking devices support these traffic growth by offering an ever increasing transmission and switching speed, mostly due to the technological advancement of microelectronics granted by Moore’s Law. However, the comparable growth rate of the Internet and electronic devices suggest that capacity of systems will become a crucial factor in the years ahead. Besides the growth rate challenge that electronic devices face with respect to traffic growth, networking devices have always been characterized by the development of proprietary architectures. This means that incompatible equipment and architectures, especially in terms of configuration and management procedures. The major drawback of such industrial practice, however, is that the devices lack flexibility and programmability which is one of the source of ossification for today’s Internet. Thus scaling or modifying networking devices, particularly routers, for a desired function requires a flexible and programmable devices. Software routers (SRs) based on personal computers (PCs) are among these devices that satisfy the flexibility and programmability criteria. Furthermore, the availability of large number of open-source software for networking applications both for data as well as control plane and the low cost PCs driven by PC-market economy scale make software routers appealing alternative to expensive proprietary networking devices. That is, while software routers have the advantage of being flexible, programmable and low cost, proprietary networking equipments are usually expensive, difficult to extend, program, or otherwise experiment with because they rely on specialized and closed hardware and software. Despite their advantages, however, software routers are not without limitation. The objections to software routers include limited performance, scalability problems and lack of advanced functionality. These limitations arose from the fact that a single server limited by PCI bus width and CPU is given a responsibility to process large amount of packets. Offloading some packet processing tasks performed by the CPU to other processors, such as GPUs of the same PC or external CPUs, is a viable approach to overcome some of these limitations. In line with this, a distributed Multi-Stage Software Router (MSSR) architecture has been proposed in order to overcome both the performance and scalability issues of single PC based software routers. The architecture has three stages: i) a front-end layer-2 load balancers (LBs), open-software or open-hardware based, that act as interfaces to the external networks and distribute IP packets to ii) back-end personal computers (BEPCs), also named back-end routers in this thesis, that provide IP routing functionality, and iii) an interconnection network, based on Ethernet switches, that connects the two stages. Performance scaling of the architecture is achieved by increasing the redundancy of the routing functionality stage where multiple servers are given a coordinated task of routing packets. The scalability problem related to number of interfaces per PC is also tackled in MSSR by bundling two or more PCs’ interfaces through a switch at the front-end stage. The overall architecture is controlled and managed by a control entity named Virtual Control Processor (virtualCP), which runs on a selected back-end router, through a DIST protocol. This entity is also responsible to hide the internal details of the multistage software router architecture such that the whole architecture appear to external network devices as a single device. However, building a flexible and scalable high-performance MSSR architecture requires large number of independently, but coordinately, running internal components. As the number of internal devices increase so does the architecture control and management complexity. In addition, redundant components to scale performance means power wastage at low loads. These challenges have to be addressed in making the multistage software router a functional and competent network device. Consequently, the contribution of this thesis is to develop an MSSR centralized management system that deals with these challenges. The management system has two broadly classified sub-systems: I) power management: a module responsible to address the energy inefficiency in multistage software router architecture II) unified information management: a module responsible to create a unified management information base such that the distributed multistage router architecture appears as a single device to external network from management information perspective. The distributed multistage router power management module tries to minimize the energy consumption of the architecture by resizing the architecture to the traffic demand. During low load periods only few components, especially that of routing functionality stage, are required to readily give a service. Thus it is wise to device a mechanism that puts idle components to low power mode to save energy during low load periods. In this thesis an optimal and two heuristic algorithms, namely on-line and off-line, are proposed to adapt the architecture to an input load demand. We demonstrate that the optimal algorithm, besides having scalability issue, is an off-line approach that introduce service disruption and delay during the architecture reconfiguration period. In solving these issues, heuristic solutions are proposed and their performance is measured against the optimal solution. Results show that the algorithms fairly approximate the optimal solution and use of these algorithms save up to 57.44% of the total architecture energy consumption during low load periods. The on-line algorithms are superior among the heuristic solutions as it has the advantage of being less disruptive and has minimal service delay. Furthermore, the thesis shows that the proposed algorithms will be more efficient if the architecture is designed keeping in mind energy as one of the design parameter. In achieving this goal three different approaches to design an MSSR architecture are proposed and their energy saving efficient is evaluated both with respect to the optimal solution and other similar cluster design approaches. The multistage software router is unique from a single device as it is composed of independently running components. This means that the MSSR management information is distributed in the architecture since individual components register their own management information. It is said, however, that the MSSR internal devices work cooperatively to appear as a single network device to the external network. The MSSR architecture, as a single device, therefore requires its own management information base which is built from the management information bases dispersed among internal components. This thesis proposes a mechanism to collect and organize this distributed management information and create a single management information base representing the whole architecture. Accordingly existing SNMP management communication model has been modified to fit to distributed multi-stage router architecture and a possible management architecture is proposed. In compiling the management information, different schemes has been adopted to deal with different SNMP management information variables. Scalability analysis shows that proposed management system scales well and does not pose a threat to the overall architecture scalability

    Robust network design under polyhedral traffic uncertainty

We consider the case where the set of feasible demands is defined by an arbitrary polyhedron. Our motivation is to determine link capacity or routing configurations, which remain feasible for any realization in the corresponding demand polyhedron. We consider three well-known problems under polyhedral demand uncertainty all of which are posed as semi-infinite mixed integer programming problems. We develop explicit, compact formulations for all three problems as well as alternative formulations and exact solution methods. The first problem arises in the Virtual Private Network (VPN) design field. We present compact linear mixed-integer programming formulations for the problem with the classical hose traffic model and for a new, less conservative, robust variant relying on accessible traffic statistics. Although we can solve these formulations for medium-to-large instances in reasonable times using off-the-shelf MIP solvers, we develop a combined branch-and-price and cutting plane algorithm to handle larger instances. We also provide an extensive discussion of our numerical results. Next, we study the Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) routing enhanced with traffic engineering tools under general demand uncertainty with the motivation to discuss if OSPF could be made comparable to the general unconstrained routing (MPLS) when it is provided with a less restrictive operating environment. To the best of our knowledge, these two routing mechanisms are compared for the first time under such a general setting. We provide compact formulations for both routing types and show that MPLS routing for polyhedral demands can be computed in polynomial time. Moreover, we present a specialized branchand-price algorithm strengthened with the inclusion of cuts as an exact solution tool. Subsequently, we compare the new and more flexible OSPF routing with MPLS as well as the traditional OSPF on several network instances. We observe that the management tools we use in OSPF make it significantly better than the generic OSPF. Moreover, we show that OSPF performance can get closer to that of MPLS in some cases. Finally, we consider the Network Loading Problem (NLP) under a polyhedral uncertainty description of traffic demands. After giving a compact multicommodity formulation of the problem, we prove an unexpected decomposition property obtained from projecting out the flow variables, considerably simplifying the resulting polyhedral analysis and computations by doing away with metric inequalities, an attendant feature of most successful algorithms on NLP. Under the hose model of feasible demands, we study the polyhedral aspects of NLP, used as the basis of an efficient branch-and-cut algorithm supported by a simple heuristic for generating upper bounds.     Network flow problems and congestion games : complexity and approximation results

We first address the complexity of finding an optimal minimum cost solution to a congestion game. We consider both network and general congestion games, and we examine several variants of the problem concerning the structure of the game and its associated cost functions. Many of the problem variants are NP-hard, though we do identify several versions of the games that are solvable in polynomial time. We then investigate existence and the price of anarchy of pure Nash equilibria in k-splittable congestion games with linear costs. A k-splittable congestion game is one in which each player may split its flow on at most k different paths. We identify conditions for the existence of equilibria by providing a series of potential functions. For the price of anarchy, we show an asymptotic lower bound of 2.4 for unweighted k-splittable congestion games and 2.401 for weighted k-splittable congestion games, and an upper bound of 2.618 in both cases.In this thesis we examine four network flow problems arising in the study of transportation, communication, and water networks. The first of these problems is the Integer Equal Flow problem, a network flow variant in which some arcs are restricted to carry equal amounts of flow. Our main contribution is that this problem is not approximable within a factor of 2n(1-epsilon]), for any fixed [epsilon] > 0, where n is the number of nodes in the graph. We extend this result to a number of variants on the size and structure of the arc sets. We next study the Pup Matching problem, a truck routing problem where two commodities ('pups') traversing an arc together in the network incur the arc cost only once. We propose a tighter integer programming formulation for this problem, and we address practical problems that arise with implementing such integer programming solutions. Additionally, we provide approximation and exact algorithms for special cases of the problem where the number of pups is fixed or the total cost in the network is bounded.     Maximizing Routing Throughput with Applications to Delay Tolerant Networks

    abstract: Many applications require efficient data routing and dissemination in Delay Tolerant Networks (DTNs) in order to maximize the throughput of data in the network, such as providing healthcare to remote communities, and spreading related information in Mobile Social Networks (MSNs). In this thesis, the feasibility of using boats in the Amazon Delta Riverine region as data mule nodes is investigated and a robust data routing algorithm based on a fountain code approach is designed to ensure fast and timely data delivery considering unpredictable boat delays, break-downs, and high transmission failures. Then, the scenario of providing healthcare in Amazon Delta Region is extended to a general All-or-Nothing (Splittable) Multicommodity Flow (ANF) problem and a polynomial time constant approximation algorithm is designed for the maximum throughput routing problem based on a randomized rounding scheme with applications to DTNs. In an MSN, message content is closely related to users’ preferences, and can be used to significantly impact the performance of data dissemination. An interest- and content-based algorithm is developed where the contents of the messages, along with the network structural information are taken into consideration when making message relay decisions in order to maximize data throughput in an MSN. Extensive experiments show the effectiveness of the above proposed data dissemination algorithm by comparing it with state-of-the-art techniques.Dissertation/ThesisDoctoral Dissertation Computer Science 201
