Modelling Reactive Multimedia: Design and Authoring
Multimedia document authoring is a multifaceted activity, and authoring tools tend to concentrate on a restricted set of the activities involved in the creation of a multimedia artifact. In particular, a distinction may be drawn between the design and the implementation of a multimedia artifact.
This paper presents a comparison of three different authoring paradigms, based on the common case study of a simple interactive animation. We present details of its implementation using the three different authoring tools, MCF, Fran and SMIL 2.0, and we discuss the conclusions that may be drawn from our comparison of the three approaches
Modelling and Refinement in CODA
This paper provides an overview of the CODA framework for modelling and
refinement of component-based embedded systems. CODA is an extension of Event-B
and UML-B and is supported by a plug-in for the Rodin toolset. CODA augments
Event-B with constructs for component-based modelling including components,
communications ports, port connectors, timed communications and timing
triggers. Component behaviour is specified through a combination of UML-B state
machines and Event-B. CODA communications and timing are given an Event-B
semantics through translation rules. Refinement is based on Event-B refinement

Extension to UML-B Notation and Toolset
The UML-B notation has been created as an attempt to combine the success and ease of use of UML, with the verification and rigorous development capabilities of formal methods. However, the notation currently only supports a basic diagram set. To address this we have, in this project, designed and implemented a set of extensions to the UML-B notation that provide a much fuller software engineering experience, critically making UML-B more appealing to industry partners. These extensions comprise five new diagram types, which are aimed at supplying a broader range of design capabilities, such as conceptual Use-Case design and future integration with the ProB animator tool
Introducing Simulation and Model Animation in the MDE Topcased Toolkit
International audienceThe Topcased project aims at developing a modular and generic CASE environment for model driven development of safety critical systems. Model validation is a key feature in this project and model simulation is a major way for validation. The purpose of this paper is to present the current Topcased process for building model simulators and animators. After introducing the functional requirements for model simulation and animation, it is explained how simulation is currently being integrated in the Topcased environment, presenting the main components of a simulator: a model animator, a scenario builder and a simulation engine. The approach is illustrated by the presentation of the first simulation experiment conducted in the project: the UML 2 StateMachines case study
The pros and cons of using SDL for creation of distributed services
In a competitive market for the creation of complex distributed services, time to market, development cost, maintenance and flexibility are key issues. Optimizing the development process is very much a matter of optimizing the technologies used during service creation. A tool-mediated cognitive apprenticeship approach for a computer engineering course
Teaching database engineers involves a variety of learning activities. A strong focus is on practical problems that go beyond the acquisition of knowledge. Skills and experience are equally important. We propose a virtual apprenticeship model for the knowledge- and skillsoriented Web-based education of database students. We adapt the classical cognitive apprenticeship theory to the Web context utilising scaffolding and activity theory. The choice of educational media and the forms of student interaction with the media are central success criteria
Graphics for uncertainty
Graphical methods such as colour shading and animation, which are widely available, can be very effective in communicating uncertainty. In particular, the idea of a âdensity stripâ provides a conceptually simple representation of a distribution and this is explored in a variety of settings, including a comparison of means, regression and models for contingency tables. Animation is also a very useful device for exploring uncertainty and this is explored particularly in the context of flexible models, expressed in curves and surfaces whose structure is of particular interest. Animation can further provide a helpful mechanism for exploring data in several dimensions. This is explored in the simple but very important setting of spatiotemporal data
Formal requirements modeling with executable use cases and Coloured Petri Nets
This paper presents executable use cases (EUCs),
which constitute a model-based approach to requirements engineering. EUCs may be used as a supplement to model-driven development (MDD) and can describe and link user-level requirements and more technical software specifications.
In MDD, user-level requirements are not always
explicitly described, since usually it is sufficient that one provides a specification, or platform-independent model, of the software that is to be developed. Therefore, a combination of EUCs and MDD may have potential to cover the path from user-level requirements via specifications to implementations
