    A Multiobjective Computation Offloading Algorithm for Mobile Edge Computing

    In mobile edge computing (MEC), smart mobile devices (SMDs) with limited computation resources and battery lifetime can offload their computing-intensive tasks to MEC servers, thus to enhance the computing capability and reduce the energy consumption of SMDs. Nevertheless, offloading tasks to the edge incurs additional transmission time and thus higher execution delay. This paper studies the trade-off between the completion time of applications and the energy consumption of SMDs in MEC networks. The problem is formulated as a multiobjective computation offloading problem (MCOP), where the task precedence, i.e. ordering of tasks in SMD applications, is introduced as a new constraint in the MCOP. An improved multiobjective evolutionary algorithm based on decomposition (MOEA/D) with two performance enhancing schemes is proposed.1) The problem-specific population initialization scheme uses a latency-based execution location initialization method to initialize the execution location (i.e. either local SMD or MEC server) for each task. 2) The dynamic voltage and frequency scaling based energy conservation scheme helps to decrease the energy consumption without increasing the completion time of applications. The simulation results clearly demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms a number of state-of-the-art heuristics and meta-heuristics in terms of the convergence and diversity of the obtained nondominated solutions

    Flexible jobshop scheduling problem with resource recovery constraints.

    Objectives and methods of study: The general objective of this research is to study a scheduling problem found in a local brewery. The main problem can be seen as a parallel machine batch scheduling problem with sequence-dependent setup times, resource constraints, precedence relationships, and capacity constraints. In the first part of this research, the problem is characterized as a Flexible Job-shop Scheduling Problem with Resource Recovery Constraints. A mixed integer linear formulation is proposed and a large set of instances adapted from the literatura of the Flexible Job-shop Scheduling Problem is used to validate the model. A solution procedure based on a General Variable Neighborhood Search metaheuristic is proposed, the performance of the procedure is evaluated by using a set of instances adapted from the literature. In the second part, the real problem is addressed. All the assumptions and constraints faced by the decision maker in the brewery are taken into account. Due to the complexity of the problem, no mathematical formulation is presented, instead, a solution method based on a Greedy Randomize Adaptive Search Procedure is proposed. Several real instances are solved by this algorithm and a comparison is carried out between the solutions reported by our GRASP and the ones found through the procedure followed by the decision maker. The computational results reveal the efficiency of our method, considering both the processing time and the completion time of the scheduling. Our algorithm requires less time to generate the production scheduling (few seconds) while the decision maker takes a full day to do it. Moreover, the completion time of the production scheduling generated by our algorithm is shorter than the one generated through the process followed by the decision maker. This time saving leads to an increase of the production capacity of the company. Contributions: The main contributions of this thesis can be summarized as follows: i) the introduction of a variant of the Flexible Job-shop Scheduling Problem, named as the Flexible Job-shop Scheduling Problem with Resource Recovery Constraints (FRRC); ii) a mixed integer linear formulation and a General Variable Neighborhood Search for the FRRC; and iii) a case study for which a Greedy Randomize Adaptive Search Procedure has been proposed and tested on real and artificial instances.     At the beginning of the new century, Information Technologies had become basic and indispensable constituents of the production and preparation processes for all kinds of goods and services and with that are largely influencing both the working and private life of nearly every citizen. This development will continue and even further grow with the continually increasing use of the Internet in production, business, science, education, and everyday societal and private undertaking. Recent years have shown, however, that a dramatic enhancement of software capabilities is required, when aiming to continuously provide advanced and competitive products and services in all these fast developing sectors. It includes the development of intelligent systems – systems that are more autonomous, flexible, and robust than today’s conventional software. Intelligent Planning and Scheduling is a key enabling technology for intelligent systems. It has been developed and matured over the last three decades and has successfully been employed for a variety of applications in commerce, industry, education, medicine, public transport, defense, and government. This document reviews the state-of-the-art in key application and technical areas of Intelligent Planning and Scheduling. It identifies the most important research, development, and technology transfer efforts required in the coming 3 to 10 years and shows the way forward to meet these challenges in the short-, medium- and longer-term future. The roadmap has been developed under the regime of PLANET – the European Network of Excellence in AI Planning. This network, established by the European Commission in 1998, is the co-ordinating framework for research, development, and technology transfer in the field of Intelligent Planning and Scheduling in Europe. A large number of people have contributed to this document including the members of PLANET non- European international experts, and a number of independent expert peer reviewers. All of them are acknowledged in a separate section of this document. Intelligent Planning and Scheduling is a far-reaching technology. Accepting the challenges and progressing along the directions pointed out in this roadmap will enable a new generation of intelligent application systems in a wide variety of industrial, commercial, public, and private sectors
