    Map online system using internet-based image catalogue

    Digital maps carry along its geodata information such as coordinate that is important in one particular topographic and thematic map. These geodatas are meaningful especially in military field. Since the maps carry along this information, its makes the size of the images is too big. The bigger size, the bigger storage is required to allocate the image file. It also can cause longer loading time. These conditions make it did not suitable to be applied in image catalogue approach via internet environment. With compression techniques, the image size can be reduced and the quality of the image is still guaranteed without much changes. This report is paying attention to one of the image compression technique using wavelet technology. Wavelet technology is much batter than any other image compression technique nowadays. As a result, the compressed images applied to a system called Map Online that used Internet-based Image Catalogue approach. This system allowed user to buy map online. User also can download the maps that had been bought besides using the searching the map. Map searching is based on several meaningful keywords. As a result, this system is expected to be used by Jabatan Ukur dan Pemetaan Malaysia (JUPEM) in order to make the organization vision is implemented

    Characterizing the effect of spatial translations on JPEG-compressed images

    The JPEG Still Image Data Compression Standard is one of the most pervasive digital image compression schemes in use today. JPEG is especially suited to digitized photograph archiving, and lately has grown popular in industry as a standard for handling images on networks and the Internet. The emergence of new applications and image file formats (FlashPix) that use JPEG compression is allowing developers and software users to create applications that retrieve, manipulate, and store images in databases located on the Internet. In most cases, these applications are dealing with JPEG images, or a format that uses JPEG as the compression scheme, as is the case with the FlashPix format. Some of these new applications are allowing clients (web users) to enhance and manipulate these downloaded images, and then restore them on these image repository databases. Unfortunately, with JPEG compression, there is a cost that comes with compression and decompression. Blocking artifacts will always result when using JPEG to compress images, and the artifacts become worse with lower quality levels of compression, or higher compression ratios. These artifacts usually are acceptable if a little care is taken in choosing the quality factor, however, other degradation occurs whenever an image is translated, or shifted by a few pixels, in a horizontal or vertical direction. Translation can happen very easily if the image is cropped or otherwise moved. When such an image is recompressed, additional error can cause substantial artifacts that would be absent if the image was not moved. If the JPEG scheme could be modified to recognize the translations by compensating for the crop or translation, the artifacts due to this translation would be eliminated. The proposed research will attempt to characterize the error that results from such translations

Such a system enhances human communications by exploiting both visual and aural senses and provides the ultimate flexibility in work and entertainment, allowing one to collaborate with remote participants, view movies on demand, access on-line digital libraries from the desktop, and so forth.     Joint Source-Protocol-Channel Decoding: Improving 802.11N Receivers

    International audienceThis paper combines joint protocol-channel (JPC) and joint source-channel (JSC) decoding techniques within a receiver in the context of wireless data transmission. It assumes that demodulation and channel decoding at physical (PHY) layer can provide soft information about the transmitted bits. At each layer of the protocol stack, JPC decoding allows headers of corrupted packets to be reliably decoded and soft information on the corresponding payload to be forwarded to the correct upper layer. When reaching the application (APL) layer, packets may still contain errors and are JSC decoded, exploiting residual redundancy present in the compressed bitstream, to remove part of the residual errors. The main contribution of this paper is to show that these tools may be efficiently combined to obtain i) reliable protocol layers permeable to transmission errors and ii) improved source decoders. Performance is evaluated using an OMNET++ simulation for the transmission of compressed HTML files (HTTP 1.1) over a standard RTP/UDP-Lite/Ipv6/MACLite/802:11n-PHY protocol stack, only the receiver is modified. For a given packet error rate, the proposed scheme provides gains up to 2 dB in SNR compared to a standard receiver

    A nonuniform popularity-similarity optimization (nPSO) model to efficiently generate realistic complex networks with communities

    The hidden metric space behind complex network topologies is a fervid topic in current network science and the hyperbolic space is one of the most studied, because it seems associated to the structural organization of many real complex systems. The Popularity-Similarity-Optimization (PSO) model simulates how random geometric graphs grow in the hyperbolic space, reproducing strong clustering and scale-free degree distribution, however it misses to reproduce an important feature of real complex networks, which is the community organization. The Geometrical-Preferential-Attachment (GPA) model was recently developed to confer to the PSO also a community structure, which is obtained by forcing different angular regions of the hyperbolic disk to have variable level of attractiveness. However, the number and size of the communities cannot be explicitly controlled in the GPA, which is a clear limitation for real applications. Here, we introduce the nonuniform PSO (nPSO) model that, differently from GPA, forces heterogeneous angular node attractiveness by sampling the angular coordinates from a tailored nonuniform probability distribution, for instance a mixture of Gaussians. The nPSO differs from GPA in other three aspects: it allows to explicitly fix the number and size of communities; it allows to tune their mixing property through the network temperature; it is efficient to generate networks with high clustering. After several tests we propose the nPSO as a valid and efficient model to generate networks with communities in the hyperbolic space, which can be adopted as a realistic benchmark for different tasks such as community detection and link prediction

Introduction The concomitant developments of the Internet, which offers to its users always larger and more evolved contents (from HTML (HyperText Markup Language) files to multimedia applications), and of wireless systems and handhelds integrating them, have progressively convinced a fair share of people of the interest to always be connected. Still, constraints of heterogeneity, reliability, quality and delay over the transmission channels are generally imposed to fulfill the requirements of these new needs and their corresponding economical goals. This implies different theoretical and practical challenges for the digital communications community of the present time. This paper presents a survey of the different techniques existing in the domain of HTML and video stream transmission over erroneous or lossy channels. In particular, the existing techniques on joint source and channel coding and decoding for multimedia or HTML applications are surveyed, as well as the related problems of streaming and downloading files over an IP mobile link. Finally, various diversity techniques that can be considered for such links, from antenna diversity to coding diversity, are presented...L’engouement du grand public pour les applications multimédia sans fil ne cesse de croître depuis le développement d’Internet. Des contraintes d’hétérogénéité de canaux de transmission, de fiabilité, de qualité et de délai sont généralement exigées pour satisfaire les nouveaux besoins applicatifs entraînant ainsi des enjeux économiques importants. À l’heure actuelle, il reste encore un certain nombre de défis pratiques et théoriques lancés par les chercheurs de la communauté des communications numériques. C’est dans ce cadre que s’inscrit le panorama présenté ici. Cet article présente d’une part un état de l’art sur les principales techniques de codage et de décodage conjoint développées dans la littérature pour des applications multimédia de type téléchargement et diffusion de contenu sur lien mobile IP. Sont tout d’abord rappelées des notions fondamentales des communications numériques à savoir le codage de source, le codage de canal ainsi que les théorèmes de Shannon et leurs principales limitations. Les techniques de codage décodage conjoint présentées dans cet article concernent essentiellement celles développées pour des schémas de codage de source faisant intervenir des codes à longueur variable (CLV) notamment les codes d’Huffman, arithmétiques et les codes entropiques universels de type Lempel-Ziv (LZ).     Evaluating and improving the performance of video content distribution in lossy networks

    The contributions in this research are split in to three distinct, but related, areas. The focus of the work is based on improving the efficiency of video content distribution in the networks that are liable to packet loss, such as the Internet. Initially, the benefits and limitations of content distribution using Forward Error Correction (FEC) in conjunction with the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is presented. Since added FEC can be used to reduce the number of retransmissions, the requirement for TCP to deal with any losses is greatly reduced. When real-time applications are needed, delay must be kept to a minimum, and retransmissions not desirable. A balance, therefore, between additional bandwidth and delays due to retransmissions must be struck. This is followed by the proposal of a hybrid transport, specifically for H.264 encoded video, as a compromise between the delay-prone TCP and the loss-prone UDP. It is argued that the playback quality at the receiver often need not be 100% perfect, providing a certain level is assured. Reliable TCP is used to transmit and guarantee delivery of the most important packets. The delay associated with the proposal is measured, and the potential for use as an alternative to the conventional methods of transporting video by either TCP or UDP alone is demonstrated. Finally, a new objective measurement is investigated for assessing the playback quality of video transported using TCP. A new metric is defined to characterise the quality of playback in terms of its continuity. Using packet traces generated from real TCP connections in a lossy environment, simulating the playback of a video is possible, whilst monitoring buffer behaviour to calculate pause intensity values. Subjective tests are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the metric introduced and show that the results of objective and subjective scores made are closely correlated

    Analysis of the Performance of IoT Networks in Acoustic Environment by using LZW Data Compression Technique

    The Internet of Things (IoT) has experienced phenomenal growth, opening up a wide range of applications in many settings. Due to the properties of sound propagation, IoT networks operating in acoustic environments in particular present special difficulties. Data compression techniques can be used to minimize overhead and maximize resource utilization in these networks to increase performance. The performance of IoT networks in acoustic environments is examined in this study, with a focus on routing overhead, throughput, and typical end-to-end delay. Lempel-Ziv-Welch (LZW) data compression is used to reduce data size and boost communication effectiveness. Three well-known protocols—MQTT, CoAP, and Machine-to-Machine (M2M)—are assessed in relation to acoustic Internet of Things networks. To mimic different acoustic conditions and collect performance metrics, a thorough experimental setup is used. Different network topologies, data speeds, and compression settings are used in the studies to determine how they affect the performance metrics. According to the analysis's findings, all three protocols' routing overhead is greatly decreased by the LZW data compression approach, which enhances network scalability and lowers energy usage. Additionally, the compressed data size has a positive impact on network throughput, allowing for effective data transmission in acoustic contexts with limited resources. Additionally, using LZW compression is seen to minimize the average end-to-end delay, improving real-time communication applications. This study advances knowledge of IoT networks operating in acoustic environments and the effects of data reduction methods on their functionality. The results offer useful information for network engineers and system designers to optimize the performance of IoT networks in similar situations. Additionally, a comparison of the MQTT, CoAP, and M2M protocols' suitability for acoustic IoT deployments is provided, assisting in the choice of protocol for particular application needs
