    Get PDF
A number of research efforts had been devoted to forecasting stock price based on technical indicators which rely purely on historical stock price data. However, the performances of such technical indicators have not always satisfactory. The fact is, there are other influential factors that can affect the direction of stock market which form the basis of market experts’ opinion such as interest rate, inflation rate, foreign exchange rate, business sector, management caliber, investors’ confidence, government policy and political effects, among others. In this study, the effect of using hybrid market indicators such as technical and fundamental parameters as well as experts’ opinions for stock price prediction was examined. Values of variables representing these market hybrid indicators were fed into the artificial neural network (ANN) model for stock price prediction. The empirical results obtained with published stock data show that the proposed model is effective in improving the accuracy of stock price prediction. Also, the performance of the neural network predictive model developed in this study was compared with the conventional Box-Jenkins autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model which has been widely used for time series forecasting. Our findings revealed that ARIMA models cannot be effectively engaged profitably for stock price prediction. It was also observed that the pattern of ARIMA forecasting models were not satisfactory. The developed stock price predictive model with the ANN-based soft computing approach demonstrated superior performance over the ARIMA models; indeed, the actual and predicted value of the developed stock price predictive model were quite close

The stock market plays a vital role in the economic development of any country. Stock market performance can be measured by the market capitalization ratio as well as many other factors. The primary purpose of this study is to predict the movement of the stock market based on the total market capitalization of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) using autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) models as well as artificial neural networks (ANN). The data set covers monthly time series data of total market capitalization from November 2001 to December 2018. This study also shows the best model for forecasting the movement of DSE market capitalization. The ARIMA (2,1,2) model is chosen from among the several ARIMA model combinations. From several artificial neural networks (ANN) models as a modern tool, a three-layer feed-forward topology using a backpropagation algorithm with five nodes in the hidden layer, one lag, and a learning rate equal to 0.01 is selected as the best model. Finally, these selected two models are compared based on the Root-Mean-Square Error (RMSE), Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE), and Theil’s U statistic. The results showed that the estimated error of ANN is less than the estimated error of the traditional method. Doi: 10.28991/ESJ-2022-06-05-09 Full Text: PD

Forecasting Long-Term Government Bond Yields: An Application of Statistical and AI Models

This paper evaluates several artificial intelligence and classical algorithms on their ability of forecasting the monthly yield of the US 10-year Treasury bonds from a set of four economic indicators. Due to the complexity of the prediction problem, the task represents a challenging test for the algorithms under evaluation. At the same time, the study is of particular significance for the important and paradigmatic role played by the US market in the world economy. Four data-driven artificial intelligence approaches are considered, namely, a manually built fuzzy logic model, a machine learned fuzzy logic model, a self-organising map model and a multi-layer perceptron model. Their performance is compared with the performance of two classical approaches, namely, a statistical ARIMA model and an econometric error correction model. The algorithms are evaluated on a complete series of end-month US 10-year Treasury bonds yields and economic indicators from 1986:1 to 2004:12. In terms of prediction accuracy and reliability of the modelling procedure, the best results are obtained by the three parametric regression algorithms, namely the econometric, the statistical and the multi-layer perceptron model. Due to the sparseness of the learning data samples, the manual and the automatic fuzzy logic approaches fail to follow with adequate precision the range of variations of the US 10-year Treasury bonds. For similar reasons, the self-organising map model gives an unsatisfactory performance. Analysis of the results indicates that the econometric model has a slight edge over the statistical and the multi-layer perceptron models. This suggests that pure data-driven induction may not fully capture the complicated mechanisms ruling the changes in interest rates. Overall, the prediction accuracy of the best models is only marginally better than the prediction accuracy of a basic one-step lag predictor. This result highlights the difficulty of the modelling task and, in general, the difficulty of building reliable predictors for financial markets.interest rates; forecasting; neural networks; fuzzy logic.

Forecasting The Composite Stock Price Index Using Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average Hybrid Model Artificial Neural Network

A stock index is a statistical measure that reflects the overall price movement of a group of stocks selected based on certain criteria and methodologies and evaluated regularly. JCI is included in the composite index, which is the Headline index. The Headline Index is an index that is used as the main reference to describe the performance of the capital market. The JCI is very important in describing the current condition of the capital market because the JCI measures the price performance of all stocks listed on the Main Board and Development Board of the IDX. This study aims to predict JCI data using the time series method. The hybrid Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average–Artificial Neural Network (ARIMA-ANN) model combines the linear ARIMA model and the non-linear ANN model. The best models are the ARIMA model (2,1,1) and the ANN Backpropagation model with one input layer, one hidden layer with 20 neurons, and one output. The ARIMA-ANN hybrid model accurately predicts JCI data because it produces a MAPE value of less than 1%, with the level of forecasting accuracy from testing results being smaller than the level of accuracy during training. In addition, the forecast for the next five days is very accurate because it produces a very small RMSE and a MAPE below 1%, respectively, namely 56.99 and 0.72%

Stock market forecasting has long been viewed as a vital real-life topic in economics world. There are many challenges in stock market prediction systems such as the Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH), Nonlinearity, complex, diverse datasets, and parameter optimization. A stock's value on the stock market fluctuates due to many factors like previous trends of the stock, the current news, twitter feeds, any online customer feedbacks etc. In this paper, the literature is critically analysed on approaches used for stock market prediction in terms of stock datasets, features used, evaluation metrics used, statistical, machine learning and deep learning techniques along with the directions for the future. The focus of this review is on trend and value prediction for stocks. Overall, 68 research papers have been considered for review from years 1998-2023. From the review, Indian stock market datasets are found to be most frequently used datasets. Evaluation metrics used commonly are accuracy and Mean Absolute Percentage Error. ARIMA is reported as the most used frequently statistical technique for stick market prediction. Long-Short Term Memory and Support Vector Machine are the commonly used algorithms in stock market prediction. The advantages and disadvantages of frequently used evaluation metrics, machine learning, deep learning and statistical approaches are also included in this survey

A Comparison Between a Long Short-Term Memory Network Hybrid Model and an ARIMA Hybrid Model for Stock Return Predictability

This thesis explores the applicability of neural networks in stock return forecasts by designing a hybrid LSTM (long short-term memory) network and compares its forecasting ability with both a static LSTM network and an ARIMA hybrid model. The S&P100 stock set is employed as the prediction sample. The hybrid models use the neural network approach and frequentist method respectively to estimate Fama-French risk factors, then predict stock returns based on factor estimations that benefit from the prediction ability and computational power of the LSTM network and the ARIMA model as well as the Fama-French model’s explanatory power of returns. Better factor predictions are made by the LSTM network with a 31% reduction of Mean Squared Error (MSE) and broader ranges of estimation than the ARIMA model. Hybrid models demonstrate a better fit, resulting in more accurate predictions compared to the static LSTM network by an average of 4.6% (LSTM-FF) and 3.1% (ARIMA-FF). However, I find that the slight outperformance of the LSTM-FF hybrid model over the ARIMA-FF hybrid model is not statistically significant
