    Contextual lexicon-based sentiment analysis for social media.

    Sentiment analysis concerns the computational study of opinions expressed in text. Social media domains provide a wealth of opinionated data, thus, creating a greater need for sentiment analysis. Typically, sentiment lexicons that capture term-sentiment association knowledge are commonly used to develop sentiment analysis systems. However, the nature of social media content calls for analysis methods and knowledge sources that are better able to adapt to changing vocabulary. Invariably existing sentiment lexicon knowledge cannot usefully handle social media vocabulary which is typically informal and changeable yet rich in sentiment. This, in turn, has implications on the analyser's ability to effectively capture the context therein and to interpret the sentiment polarity from the lexicons. In this thesis we use SentiWordNet, a popular sentiment-rich lexicon with a substantial vocabulary coverage and explore how to adapt it for social media sentiment analysis. Firstly, the thesis identifies a set of strategies to incorporate the effect of modifiers on sentiment-bearing terms (local context). These modifiers include: contextual valence shifters, non-lexical sentiment modifiers typical in social media and discourse structures. Secondly, the thesis introduces an approach in which a domain-specific lexicon is generated using a distant supervision method and integrated with a general-purpose lexicon, using a weighted strategy, to form a hybrid (domain-adapted) lexicon. This has the dual purpose of enriching term coverage of the general purpose lexicon with non-standard but sentiment-rich terms as well as adjusting sentiment semantics of terms. Here, we identified two term-sentiment association metrics based on Term Frequency and Inverse Document Frequency that are able to outperform the state-of-the-art Point-wise Mutual Information on social media data. As distant supervision may not be readily applicable on some social media domains, we explore the cross-domain transferability of a hybrid lexicon. Thirdly, we introduce an approach for improving distant-supervised sentiment classification with knowledge from local context analysis, domain-adapted (hybrid) and emotion lexicons. Finally, we conduct a comprehensive evaluation of all identified approaches using six sentiment-rich social media datasets

    Word Embeddings for Natural Language Processing

    Word embedding is a feature learning technique which aims at mapping words from a vocabulary into vectors of real numbers in a low-dimensional space. By leveraging large corpora of unlabeled text, such continuous space representations can be computed for capturing both syntactic and semantic information about words. Word embeddings, when used as the underlying input representation, have been shown to be a great asset for a large variety of natural language processing (NLP) tasks. Recent techniques to obtain such word embeddings are mostly based on neural network language models (NNLM). In such systems, the word vectors are randomly initialized and then trained to predict optimally the contexts in which the corresponding words tend to appear. Because words occurring in similar contexts have, in general, similar meanings, their resulting word embeddings are semantically close after training. However, such architectures might be challenging and time-consuming to train. In this thesis, we are focusing on building simple models which are fast and efficient on large-scale datasets. As a result, we propose a model based on counts for computing word embeddings. A word co-occurrence probability matrix can easily be obtained by directly counting the context words surrounding the vocabulary words in a large corpus of texts. The computation can then be drastically simplified by performing a Hellinger PCA of this matrix. Besides being simple, fast and intuitive, this method has two other advantages over NNLM. It first provides a framework to infer unseen words or phrases. Secondly, all embedding dimensions can be obtained after a single Hellinger PCA, while a new training is required for each new size with NNLM. We evaluate our word embeddings on classical word tagging tasks and show that we reach similar performance than with neural network based word embeddings. While many techniques exist for computing word embeddings, vector space models for phrases remain a challenge. Still based on the idea of proposing simple and practical tools for NLP, we introduce a novel model that jointly learns word embeddings and their summation. Sequences of words (i.e. phrases) with different sizes are thus embedded in the same semantic space by just averaging word embeddings. In contrast to previous methods which reported a posteriori some compositionality aspects by simple summation, we simultaneously train words to sum, while keeping the maximum information from the original vectors. These word and phrase embeddings are then used in two different NLP tasks: document classification and sentence generation. Using such word embeddings as inputs, we show that good performance is achieved in sentiment classification of short and long text documents with a convolutional neural network. Finding good compact representations of text documents is crucial in classification systems. Based on the summation of word embeddings, we introduce a method to represent documents in a low-dimensional semantic space. This simple operation, along with a clustering method, provides an efficient framework for adding semantic information to documents, which yields better results than classical approaches for classification. Simple models for sentence generation can also be designed by leveraging such phrase embeddings. We propose a phrase-based model for image captioning which achieves similar results than those obtained with more complex models. Not only word and phrase embeddings but also embeddings for non-textual elements can be helpful for sentence generation. We, therefore, explore to embed table elements for generating better sentences from structured data. We experiment this approach with a large-scale dataset of biographies, where biographical infoboxes were available.     Knowledge Modelling and Learning through Cognitive Networks

    One of the most promising developments in modelling knowledge is cognitive network science, which aims to investigate cognitive phenomena driven by the networked, associative organization of knowledge. For example, investigating the structure of semantic memory via semantic networks has illuminated how memory recall patterns influence phenomena such as creativity, memory search, learning, and more generally, knowledge acquisition, exploration, and exploitation. In parallel, neural network models for artificial intelligence (AI) are also becoming more widespread as inferential models for understanding which features drive language-related phenomena such as meaning reconstruction, stance detection, and emotional profiling. Whereas cognitive networks map explicitly which entities engage in associative relationships, neural networks perform an implicit mapping of correlations in cognitive data as weights, obtained after training over labelled data and whose interpretation is not immediately evident to the experimenter. This book aims to bring together quantitative, innovative research that focuses on modelling knowledge through cognitive and neural networks to gain insight into mechanisms driving cognitive processes related to knowledge structuring, exploration, and learning. The book comprises a variety of publication types, including reviews and theoretical papers, empirical research, computational modelling, and big data analysis. All papers here share a commonality: they demonstrate how the application of network science and AI can extend and broaden cognitive science in ways that traditional approaches cannot

    In recent years, social media and TV-production has formed a strong link between each other. The most popular social media platform in TV-industry is Twitter, where over a million tweets are shared in one day. Tweet content is feedback straight from the viewers, and might include more valuable information than individual surveys. Going through millions of tweets is hard or impossible manually. This thesis studies, how to teach a machine by supervised manner to analyze tweets. Machine analyzes sentiments based on the features that tweets include. The main goal of this thesis is to clarify how the content can be received, prepared, extracted and classified. The study indicates that sentiments can be caught from Twitter data using mathematical patterns. The thesis is divided into 5 chapters. Chapter 1 is the introduction for the sentiment analyzing with machine learning capabilities. Chapter 2 is the literature study part, where elements and techniques are explored. Chapter 3 is the implementation part, where selected classification methods and techniques for text data are specified. Chapter 4 covers results and chapter 5 finishes the work with conclusions

    Application of Common Sense Computing for the Development of a Novel Knowledge-Based Opinion Mining Engine

    The ways people express their opinions and sentiments have radically changed in the past few years thanks to the advent of social networks, web communities, blogs, wikis and other online collaborative media. The distillation of knowledge from this huge amount of unstructured information can be a key factor for marketers who want to create an image or identity in the minds of their customers for their product, brand, or organisation. These online social data, however, remain hardly accessible to computers, as they are specifically meant for human consumption. The automatic analysis of online opinions, in fact, involves a deep understanding of natural language text by machines, from which we are still very far. Hitherto, online information retrieval has been mainly based on algorithms relying on the textual representation of web-pages. Such algorithms are very good at retrieving texts, splitting them into parts, checking the spelling and counting their words. But when it comes to interpreting sentences and extracting meaningful information, their capabilities are known to be very limited. Existing approaches to opinion mining and sentiment analysis, in particular, can be grouped into three main categories: keyword spotting, in which text is classified into categories based on the presence of fairly unambiguous affect words; lexical affinity, which assigns arbitrary words a probabilistic affinity for a particular emotion; statistical methods, which calculate the valence of affective keywords and word co-occurrence frequencies on the base of a large training corpus. Early works aimed to classify entire documents as containing overall positive or negative polarity, or rating scores of reviews. Such systems were mainly based on supervised approaches relying on manually labelled samples, such as movie or product reviews where the opinionist’s overall positive or negative attitude was explicitly indicated. However, opinions and sentiments do not occur only at document level, nor they are limited to a single valence or target. Contrary or complementary attitudes toward the same topic or multiple topics can be present across the span of a document. In more recent works, text analysis granularity has been taken down to segment and sentence level, e.g., by using presence of opinion-bearing lexical items (single words or n-grams) to detect subjective sentences, or by exploiting association rule mining for a feature-based analysis of product reviews. These approaches, however, are still far from being able to infer the cognitive and affective information associated with natural language as they mainly rely on knowledge bases that are still too limited to efficiently process text at sentence level. In this thesis, common sense computing techniques are further developed and applied to bridge the semantic gap between word-level natural language data and the concept-level opinions conveyed by these. In particular, the ensemble application of graph mining and multi-dimensionality reduction techniques on two common sense knowledge bases was exploited to develop a novel intelligent engine for open-domain opinion mining and sentiment analysis. The proposed approach, termed sentic computing, performs a clause-level semantic analysis of text, which allows the inference of both the conceptual and emotional information associated with natural language opinions and, hence, a more efficient passage from (unstructured) textual information to (structured) machine-processable data. The engine was tested on three different resources, namely a Twitter hashtag repository, a LiveJournal database and a PatientOpinion dataset, and its performance compared both with results obtained using standard sentiment analysis techniques and using different state-of-the-art knowledge bases such as Princeton’s WordNet, MIT’s ConceptNet and Microsoft’s Probase. Differently from most currently available opinion mining services, the developed engine does not base its analysis on a limited set of affect words and their co-occurrence frequencies, but rather on common sense concepts and the cognitive and affective valence conveyed by these. This allows the engine to be domain-independent and, hence, to be embedded in any opinion mining system for the development of intelligent applications in multiple fields such as Social Web, HCI and e-health. Looking ahead, the combined novel use of different knowledge bases and of common sense reasoning techniques for opinion mining proposed in this work, will, eventually, pave the way for development of more bio-inspired approaches to the design of natural language processing systems capable of handling knowledge, retrieving it when necessary, making analogies and learning from experience

    Learning domain-specific sentiment lexicons with applications to recommender systems

    Search is now going beyond looking for factual information, and people wish to search for the opinions of others to help them in their own decision-making. Sentiment expressions or opinion expressions are used by users to express their opinion and embody important pieces of information, particularly in online commerce. The main problem that the present dissertation addresses is how to model text to find meaningful words that express a sentiment. In this context, I investigate the viability of automatically generating a sentiment lexicon for opinion retrieval and sentiment classification applications. For this research objective we propose to capture sentiment words that are derived from online users’ reviews. In this approach, we tackle a major challenge in sentiment analysis which is the detection of words that express subjective preference and domain-specific sentiment words such as jargon. To this aim we present a fully generative method that automatically learns a domain-specific lexicon and is fully independent of external sources. Sentiment lexicons can be applied in a broad set of applications, however popular recommendation algorithms have somehow been disconnected from sentiment analysis. Therefore, we present a study that explores the viability of applying sentiment analysis techniques to infer ratings in a recommendation algorithm. Furthermore, entities’ reputation is intrinsically associated with sentiment words that have a positive or negative relation with those entities. Hence, is provided a study that observes the viability of using a domain-specific lexicon to compute entities reputation. Finally, a recommendation system algorithm is improved with the use of sentiment-based ratings and entities reputation
