    A hybrid intelligent system for PID controller using in a steel rolling process

    With the aim to improve the steel rolling process performance, this research presents a novel hybrid system for selecting the best parameters for tuning in open loop a PID controller. The novel hybrid system combines rule based system and Artificial Neural Networks. With the rule based system, it is modeled the existing knowledge of the PID controller tuning in open loop and, with Artificial Neural Network, it is completed the rule based model that allow to choose the optimal parameters for the controller. This hybrid model is tested with a long dataset to obtain the best fitness. Finally, the novel research is validated on a real steeling roll process applying the hybrid model to tune a PID controller which set the input speed in each of the gearboxes of the process

    AI and OR in management of operations: history and trends

    The last decade has seen a considerable growth in the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for operations management with the aim of finding solutions to problems that are increasing in complexity and scale. This paper begins by setting the context for the survey through a historical perspective of OR and AI. An extensive survey of applications of AI techniques for operations management, covering a total of over 1200 papers published from 1995 to 2004 is then presented. The survey utilizes Elsevier's ScienceDirect database as a source. Hence, the survey may not cover all the relevant journals but includes a sufficiently wide range of publications to make it representative of the research in the field. The papers are categorized into four areas of operations management: (a) design, (b) scheduling, (c) process planning and control and (d) quality, maintenance and fault diagnosis. Each of the four areas is categorized in terms of the AI techniques used: genetic algorithms, case-based reasoning, knowledge-based systems, fuzzy logic and hybrid techniques.     In this paper, the problem of designing an optimal control algorithm for rolling processes is addressed. Deriving a mathematical model for a general class of rolling mills, the optimal control problem is defined. In the design procedure, time delays in thickness measurement and control input are taken into account. The proposed strategy significantly improves the results of previous investigations from practical point of view. Simulation results are also studied to highlight the effectiveness of the method

    State of the Art in the Development of Adaptive Soft Sensors based on Just-In-Time Models

    Data-driven soft sensors have gained popularity due to availability of the recorded historical plant data. The success stories of the implementations of soft sensors, however, involved some practical difficulties. Even if a good soft sensor is successfully developed, its predictive performance will gradually deteriorate after a certain time due to changes in the state of plants and process characteristics, such as catalyst deactivation and sensor and process drifts due to equipment ageing, fouling, clogging and wear, changes of raw materials and so on. To get soft sensor automatically updated, different kinds of methods have been introduced, such as Kalman filter, moving window average, recursive and ensemble methods. However, these methods have some drawbacks which motivate the development and implementation of just-in-time (JIT) model based adaptive soft sensor. This paper aims to report the current status of adaptive soft sensors based on just-in-time modelling approach. Critical review and discussion on the original and modified algorithms of the JIT modelling approach are presented. Proposed topics for future research and development are also outlined to provide a road map on the developing improved and more practical adaptive soft sensors based on JIT models

    Soft Computing Techniques and Their Applications in Intel-ligent Industrial Control Systems: A Survey

    Soft computing involves a series of methods that are compatible with imprecise information and complex human cognition. In the face of industrial control problems, soft computing techniques show strong intelligence, robustness and cost-effectiveness. This study dedicates to providing a survey on soft computing techniques and their applications in industrial control systems. The methodologies of soft computing are mainly classified in terms of fuzzy logic, neural computing, and genetic algorithms. The challenges surrounding modern industrial control systems are summarized based on the difficulties in information acquisition, the difficulties in modeling control rules, the difficulties in control system optimization, and the requirements for robustness. Then, this study reviews soft-computing-related achievements that have been developed to tackle these challenges. Afterwards, we present a retrospect of practical industrial control applications in the fields including transportation, intelligent machines, process industry as well as energy engineering. Finally, future research directions are discussed from different perspectives. This study demonstrates that soft computing methods can endow industry control processes with many merits, thus having great application potential. It is hoped that this survey can serve as a reference and provide convenience for scholars and practitioners in the fields of industrial control and computer science

    An Omnidirectional Aerial Manipulation Platform for Contact-Based Inspection

    This paper presents an omnidirectional aerial manipulation platform for robust and responsive interaction with unstructured environments, toward the goal of contact-based inspection. The fully actuated tilt-rotor aerial system is equipped with a rigidly mounted end-effector, and is able to exert a 6 degree of freedom force and torque, decoupling the system's translational and rotational dynamics, and enabling precise interaction with the environment while maintaining stability. An impedance controller with selective apparent inertia is formulated to permit compliance in certain degrees of freedom while achieving precise trajectory tracking and disturbance rejection in others. Experiments demonstrate disturbance rejection, push-and-slide interaction, and on-board state estimation with depth servoing to interact with local surfaces. The system is also validated as a tool for contact-based non-destructive testing of concrete infrastructure.Comment: Accepted submission to Robotics: Science and Systems conference 2019. 9 pages, 12 figure
