Protection of LAN-wide, P2P interactions: a holistic approach

    Get PDF
This article advocates the need of a holistic approach to protect LAN interactions and presents a solution for implementing it based on secure LAN (SLAN), a novel security architecture. SLAN uses the 802.1X access control mechanisms and is supported by a key distribution centre (KDC) built upon an 802.1X authentication server. The KDC is used, together with a new host identification policy and modified DHCP servers, to provide proper resource allocation and message authentication in DHCP transactions. The KDC is used to authenticate ARP transactions and to distribute session keys to pairs of LAN hosts, allowing them to set up arbitrary, LAN-wide peer-to-peer security associations using such session keys. We show how PPPoE and IPSec security associations may be instantiated and present a prototype implementation for IPSec

A Survey on Spoofing and Selective Forwarding Attacks on Zigbee based WSN

The main focus of WSN is to gather data from the physical world. It is often deployed for sensing, processing as well as disseminating information of the targeted physical environments. The main objective of the WSN is to collect data from the target environment using sensors as well as transmit those data to the desired place of choice. In order to achieve an efficient performance, WSN should have efficient as well as reliable networking protocols. The most popular technology behind WSN is Zigbee. In this paper a pilot study is done on important security issues on spoofing and selective forwarding attack on Zigbee based WSN. This paper identifies the security vulnerabilities of Zigbee network and gaps in the existing methodologies to address the security issues and will help the future researchers to narrow down their research in WSN.Keywords: Zigbee, WSN, Protocol Stack, Spoofing and Selective Forwarding

    Network-based APT profiler

Constant innovation in attack methods presents a significant problem for the security community which struggles to remain current in attack prevention, detection and response. The practice of threat hunting provides a proactive approach to identify and mitigate attacks in real-time before the attackers complete their objective. In this research, I present a matrix of adversary techniques inspired by MITRE’s ATT&CK matrix. This study allows threat hunters to classify the actions of advanced persistent threats (APTs) according to network-based behaviors

Secure Communication using Identity Based Encryption

    Get PDF
Secured communication has been widely deployed to guarantee confidentiality and\ud integrity of connections over untrusted networks, e.g., the Internet. Although\ud secure connections are designed to prevent attacks on the connection, they hide\ud attacks inside the channel from being analyzed by Intrusion Detection Systems\ud (IDS). Furthermore, secure connections require a certain key exchange at the\ud initialization phase, which is prone to Man-In-The-Middle (MITM) attacks. In this paper, we present a new method to secure connection which enables Intrusion Detection and overcomes the problem of MITM attacks. We propose to apply Identity Based Encryption (IBE) to secure a communication channel. The key escrow property of IBE is used to recover the decryption key, decrypt network traffic on the fly, and scan for malicious content. As the public key can be generated based on the identity of the connected server and its exchange is not necessary, MITM attacks are not easy to be carried out any more. A prototype of a modified TLS scheme is implemented and proved with a simple client-server application. Based on this prototype, a new IDS sensor is developed to be capable of identifying IBE encrypted secure traffic on the fly. A deployment architecture of the IBE sensor in a company network is proposed. Finally, we show the applicability by a practical experiment and some preliminary performance measurements
