    High-speed Video from Asynchronous Camera Array

    This paper presents a method for capturing high-speed video using an asynchronous camera array. Our method sequentially fires each sensor in a camera array with a small time offset and assembles captured frames into a high-speed video according to the time stamps. The resulting video, however, suffers from parallax jittering caused by the viewpoint difference among sensors in the camera array. To address this problem, we develop a dedicated novel view synthesis algorithm that transforms the video frames as if they were captured by a single reference sensor. Specifically, for any frame from a non-reference sensor, we find the two temporally neighboring frames captured by the reference sensor. Using these three frames, we render a new frame with the same time stamp as the non-reference frame but from the viewpoint of the reference sensor. Specifically, we segment these frames into super-pixels and then apply local content-preserving warping to warp them to form the new frame. We employ a multi-label Markov Random Field method to blend these warped frames. Our experiments show that our method can produce high-quality and high-speed video of a wide variety of scenes with large parallax, scene dynamics, and camera motion and outperforms several baseline and state-of-the-art approaches.Comment: 10 pages, 82 figures, Published at IEEE WACV 201

    ST-GAN: Spatial Transformer Generative Adversarial Networks for Image Compositing

    We address the problem of finding realistic geometric corrections to a foreground object such that it appears natural when composited into a background image. To achieve this, we propose a novel Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) architecture that utilizes Spatial Transformer Networks (STNs) as the generator, which we call Spatial Transformer GANs (ST-GANs). ST-GANs seek image realism by operating in the geometric warp parameter space. In particular, we exploit an iterative STN warping scheme and propose a sequential training strategy that achieves better results compared to naive training of a single generator. One of the key advantages of ST-GAN is its applicability to high-resolution images indirectly since the predicted warp parameters are transferable between reference frames. We demonstrate our approach in two applications: (1) visualizing how indoor furniture (e.g. from product images) might be perceived in a room, (2) hallucinating how accessories like glasses would look when matched with real portraits.Comment: Accepted to CVPR 2018 (website & code: https://chenhsuanlin.bitbucket.io/spatial-transformer-GAN/

    3DFill:Reference-guided Image Inpainting by Self-supervised 3D Image Alignment

    Most existing image inpainting algorithms are based on a single view, struggling with large holes or the holes containing complicated scenes. Some reference-guided algorithms fill the hole by referring to another viewpoint image and use 2D image alignment. Due to the camera imaging process, simple 2D transformation is difficult to achieve a satisfactory result. In this paper, we propose 3DFill, a simple and efficient method for reference-guided image inpainting. Given a target image with arbitrary hole regions and a reference image from another viewpoint, the 3DFill first aligns the two images by a two-stage method: 3D projection + 2D transformation, which has better results than 2D image alignment. The 3D projection is an overall alignment between images and the 2D transformation is a local alignment focused on the hole region. The entire process of image alignment is self-supervised. We then fill the hole in the target image with the contents of the aligned image. Finally, we use a conditional generation network to refine the filled image to obtain the inpainting result. 3DFill achieves state-of-the-art performance on image inpainting across a variety of wide view shifts and has a faster inference speed than other inpainting models

    Application for light field inpainting

    Light Field (LF) imaging is a multimedia technology that can provide more immersive experience when visualizing a multimedia content with higher levels of realism compared to conventional imaging technologies. This technology is mainly promising for Virtual Reality (VR) since it displays real-world scenes in a way that users can experience the captured scenes in every position and every angle, due to its 4-dimensional LF representation. For these reasons, LF is a fast-growing technology, with so many topics to explore, being the LF inpainting the one that was explored in this dissertation. Image inpainting is an editing technique that allows synthesizing alternative content to fill in holes in an image. It is commonly used to fill missing parts in a scene and restore damaged images such that the modifications are correct and visually realistic. Applying traditional 2D inpainting techniques straightforwardly to LFs is very unlikely to result in a consistent inpainting in its all 4 dimensions. Usually, to inpaint a 4D LF content, 2D inpainting algorithms are used to inpaint a particular point of view and then 4D inpainting propagation algorithms propagate the inpainted result for the whole 4D LF data. Based on this idea of 4D inpainting propagation, some 4D LF inpainting techniques have been recently proposed in the literature. Therefore, this dissertation proposes to design and implement an LF inpainting application that can be used by the public that desire to work in this field and/or explore and edit LFs.Campos de luz é uma tecnologia multimédia que fornece uma experiência mais imersiva ao visualizar conteúdo multimédia com níveis mais altos de realismo, comparando a tecnologias convencionais de imagem. Esta tecnologia é promissora, principalmente para Realidade Virtual, pois exibe cenas capturadas do mundo real de forma que utilizadores as possam experimentar em todas as posições e ângulos, devido à sua representação em 4 dimensões. Por isso, esta é tecnologia em rápido crescimento, com tantos tópicos para explorar, sendo o inpainting o explorado nesta dissertação. Inpainting de imagens é uma técnica de edição, permitindo sintetizar conteúdo alternativo para preencher lacunas numa imagem. Comumente usado para preencher partes que faltam numa cena e restaurar imagens danificadas, de forma que as modificações sejam corretas e visualmente realistas. É muito improvável que aplicar técnicas tradicionais de inpainting 2D diretamente a campos de luz resulte num inpainting consistente em todas as suas 4 dimensões. Normalmente, para fazer inpainting num conteúdo 4D de campos de luz, os algoritmos de inpainting 2D são usados para fazer inpainting de um ponto de vista específico e, seguidamente, os algoritmos de propagação de inpainting 4D propagam o resultado do inpainting para todos os dados do campo de luz 4D. Com base nessa ideia de propagação de inpainting 4D, algumas técnicas foram recentemente propostas na literatura. Assim, esta dissertação propõe-se a conceber e implementar uma aplicação de inpainting de campos de luz que possa ser utilizada pelo público que pretenda trabalhar nesta área e/ou explorar e editar campos de luz

    Faithful completion of images of scenic landmarks using internet images

    Abstract—Previous works on image completion typically aim to produce visually plausible results rather than factually correct ones. In this paper, we propose an approach to faithfully complete the missing regions of an image. We assume that the input image is taken at a well-known landmark, so similar images taken at the same location can be easily found on the Internet. We first download thousands of images from the Internet using a text label provided by the user. Next, we apply two-step filtering to reduce them to a small set of candidate images for use as source images for completion. For each candidate image, a co-matching algorithm is used to find correspondences of both points and lines between the candidate image and the input image. These are used to find an optimal warp relating the two images. A completion result is obtained by blending the warped candidate image into the missing region of the input image. The completion results are ranked according to combination score, which considers both warping and blending energy, and the highest ranked ones are shown to the user. Experiments and results demonstrate that our method can faithfully complete images

    New visual coding exploration in MPEG: Super-MultiView and free navigation in free viewpoint TV

    ISO/IEC MPEG and ITU-T VCEG have recently jointly issued a new multiview video compression standard, called 3D-HEVC, which reaches unpreceded compression performances for linear,dense camera arrangements. In view of supporting future highquality,auto-stereoscopic 3D displays and Free Navigation virtual/augmented reality applications with sparse, arbitrarily arranged camera setups, innovative depth estimation and virtual view synthesis techniques with global optimizations over all camera views should be developed. Preliminary studies in response to the MPEG-FTV (Free viewpoint TV) Call for Evidence suggest these targets are within reach, with at least 6% bitrate gains over 3DHEVC technology

    Fast Full-frame Video Stabilization with Iterative Optimization

    Video stabilization refers to the problem of transforming a shaky video into a visually pleasing one. The question of how to strike a good trade-off between visual quality and computational speed has remained one of the open challenges in video stabilization. Inspired by the analogy between wobbly frames and jigsaw puzzles, we propose an iterative optimization-based learning approach using synthetic datasets for video stabilization, which consists of two interacting submodules: motion trajectory smoothing and full-frame outpainting. First, we develop a two-level (coarse-to-fine) stabilizing algorithm based on the probabilistic flow field. The confidence map associated with the estimated optical flow is exploited to guide the search for shared regions through backpropagation. Second, we take a divide-and-conquer approach and propose a novel multiframe fusion strategy to render full-frame stabilized views. An important new insight brought about by our iterative optimization approach is that the target video can be interpreted as the fixed point of nonlinear mapping for video stabilization. We formulate video stabilization as a problem of minimizing the amount of jerkiness in motion trajectories, which guarantees convergence with the help of fixed-point theory. Extensive experimental results are reported to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed approach in terms of computational speed and visual quality.     INTERMEDIATE VIEW RECONSTRUCTION FOR MULTISCOPIC 3D DISPLAY

    This thesis focuses on Intermediate View Reconstruction (IVR) which generates additional images from the available stereo images. The main application of IVR is to generate the content of multiscopic 3D displays, and it can be applied to generate different viewpoints to Free-viewpoint TV (FTV). Although IVR is considered a good approach to generate additional images, there are some problems with the reconstruction process, such as detecting and handling the occlusion areas, preserving the discontinuity at edges, and reducing image artifices through formation of the texture of the intermediate image. The occlusion area is defined as the visibility of such an area in one image and its disappearance in the other one. Solving IVR problems is considered a significant challenge for researchers. In this thesis, several novel algorithms have been specifically designed to solve IVR challenges by employing them in a highly robust intermediate view reconstruction algorithm. Computer simulation and experimental results confirm the importance of occluded areas in IVR. Therefore, we propose a novel occlusion detection algorithm and another novel algorithm to Inpaint those areas. Then, these proposed algorithms are employed in a novel occlusion-aware intermediate view reconstruction that finds an intermediate image with a given disparity between two input images. This novelty is addressed by adding occlusion awareness to the reconstruction algorithm and proposing three quality improvement techniques to reduce image artifices: filling the re-sampling holes, removing ghost contours, and handling the disocclusion area. We compared the proposed algorithms to the previously well-known algorithms on each field qualitatively and quantitatively. The obtained results show that our algorithms are superior to the previous well-known algorithms. The performance of the proposed reconstruction algorithm is tested under 13 real images and 13 synthetic images. Moreover, analysis of a human-trial experiment conducted with 21 participants confirmed that the reconstructed images from our proposed algorithm have very high quality compared with the reconstructed images from the other existing algorithms

    Advanced editing methods for image and video sequences

    In the context of image and video editing, this thesis proposes methods for modifying the semantic content of a recorded scene. Two different editing problems are approached: First, the removal of ghosting artifacts from high dynamic range (HDR) images recovered from exposure sequences, and second, the removal of objects from video sequences recorded with and without camera motion. These editings need to be performed in a way that the result looks plausible to humans, but without having to recover detailed models about the content of the scene, e.g. its geometry, reflectance, or illumination. The proposed editing methods add new key ingredients, such as camera noise models and global optimization frameworks, that help achieving results that surpass the capabilities of state-of-the-art methods. Using these ingredients, each proposed method defines local visual properties that approximate well the specific editing requirements of each task. These properties are then encoded into a energy function that, when globally minimized, produces the required editing results. The optimization of such energy functions corresponds to Bayesian inference problems that are solved efficiently using graph cuts. The proposed methods are demonstrated to outperform other state-ofthe-art methods. Furthermore, they are demonstrated to work well on complex real-world scenarios that have not been previously addressed in the literature, i.e., highly cluttered scenes for HDR deghosting, and highly dynamic scenes and unconstraint camera motion for object removal from videos.Diese Arbeit schlägt Methoden zur Änderung des semantischen Inhalts einer aufgenommenen Szene im Kontext der Bild-und Videobearbeitung vor. Zwei unterschiedliche Bearbeitungsmethoden werden angesprochen: Erstens, das Entfernen von Ghosting Artifacts (Geist-ähnliche Artefakte) aus High Dynamic Range (HDR) Bildern welche von Belichtungsreihen erstellt wurden und zweitens, das Entfernen von Objekten aus Videosequenzen mit und ohne Kamerabewegung. Das Bearbeiten muss in einer Weise durchgeführt werden, dass das Ergebnis für den Menschen plausibel aussieht, aber ohne das detaillierte Modelle des Szeneninhalts rekonstruiert werden müssen, z.B. die Geometrie, das Reflexionsverhalten, oder Beleuchtungseigenschaften. Die vorgeschlagenen Bearbeitungsmethoden beinhalten neuartige Elemente, etwa Kameralärm-Modelle und globale Optimierungs-Systeme, mit deren Hilfe es möglich ist die Eigenschaften der modernsten existierenden Methoden zu übertreffen. Mit Hilfe dieser Elemente definieren die vorgeschlagenen Methoden lokale visuelle Eigenschaften welche die beschriebenen Bearbeitungsmethoden gut annähern. Diese Eigenschaften werden dann als Energiefunktion codiert, welche, nach globalem minimieren, die gewünschten Bearbeitung liefert. Die Optimierung solcher Energiefunktionen entspricht dem Bayes’schen Inferenz Modell welches effizient mittels Graph-Cut Algorithmen gelöst werden kann. Es wird gezeigt, dass die vorgeschlagenen Methoden den heutigen Stand der Technik übertreffen. Darüber hinaus sind sie nachweislich gut auf komplexe natürliche Szenarien anwendbar, welche in der existierenden Literatur bisher noch nicht angegangen wurden, d.h. sehr unübersichtliche Szenen für HDR Deghosting und sehr dynamische Szenen und unbeschränkte Kamerabewegungen für das Entfernen von Objekten aus Videosequenzen
