    A DC-DC converter for generating a DC output voltage includes: a digitally controlled pulse width modulator (DPWM) for controlling a switching power stage to supply a varying voltage to an inductor; and a digital voltage feedback circuit for controlling the DPWM in accordance with a feedback voltage corresponding to the DC output voltage, the digital voltage feedback circuit including: a first voltage controlled oscillator for converting the feedback voltage into a first frequency signal and to supply the first frequency signal to a first frequency discriminator; a second voltage controlled oscillator for converting a reference voltage into a second frequency signal and to supply the second frequency signal to a second frequency discriminator; a digital comparator for comparing digital outputs of the first and second frequency discriminators and for outputting a digital feedback signal; and a controller for controlling the DPWM in accordance with the digital feedback signal

    Digitally Controlled Oscillator for mm-Wave Frequencies

    In the fifth generation of mobile communication, 5G, frequencies above 30 GHz, so-called millimeter-wave (mm-wave) frequencies are expected to play a prominent role. For the synthesis of these frequencies, the all-digital phase locked loop (ADPLL) has recently gained much attention. A core component of the ADPLL is the digitally controlled oscillator (DCO), an oscillator that tunes the frequency discretely. For good performance, the frequency steps must be made very small, while the total tuning range must be large. This thesis covers several coarse- and fine-tuning techniques for DCOs operating at mm-wave frequencies. Three previously not published fine-tuning schemes are presented: The first one tunes the second harmonic, which will, due to the Groszkowski effect, tune the fundamental tone. The second one is a current-modulation scheme, which utilizes the weak current-dependence of the capacitance of a transistor to tune the frequency. In the third one, a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) is connected to the bulk of the differential pair and tunes the frequency by setting the bulk voltage. The advantages and disadvantages of the presented tuning schemes are discussed and compared with previously reported fine-tuning schemes. Two oscillators were implemented at 86 GHz. Both oscillator use the same oscillator core and hence have the same power consumption and tuning range, 14.1 mW and 13.9%. A phase noise of -89.7 dBc/Hz and -111.4 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz and 10 MHz offset, respectively, were achieved, corresponding to a Figure-of-Merit of -178.5 dBc/Hz. The first oscillator is fine-tuned using a combination of a transformer-based fine-tuning and the current modulation scheme presented here. The achieved frequency resolution is 55 kHz, but can easily be made finer. The second oscillator utilizes the bulk bias technique to achieve its fine tuning. The fine-tuning resolution is here dependent on the resolution of the DAC; a 100μV resolution corresponds to a resolution of 50 kHz.n 2011, the global monthly mobile data usage was 0.5 exabytes, or 500 million gigabytes. In 2016, this number had increased to 7 exabytes, an increase by a factor 14 in just five years, and there are no signs of this trend slowing down. To meet the demands of the ever increasing data usage, engineers have begun to investigate the possibility to use significantly higher frequencies, 30 GHz or higher, for mobile communication than what is used today, which is 3 GHz or below. To be able to transmit and receive data at these high frequency, an oscillator capable of operating at these frequencies are required. An oscillator is an electrical circuit that generates an alternating current (a current that first goes one way, and then the other) at a specific frequency. Below is an example to illustrate to function and importance of the oscillator: Imagine driving a car and listening to the radio. Suddenly, a horrendous song starts playing from the radio, so you instantly tune to another station and find some great, smooth jazz. Satisfied, you lean back and drive on. But what exactly happened when you "tuned to another station"? What you really did was changing the frequency of the oscillator, which can be found in the radio receiver of the car. The radio receiver filters out all frequencies, except for the frequency of the local oscillator. So by setting the frequency of the local oscillator to the frequency of the desired radio channel, only this radio channel will reach the speakers of the car. Thus, the oscillator must be able to vary its frequency to any frequency that a radio station can transmit on. While an old car radio may seem like a simple example, the very same principle is used in mobile communication, even at frequencies above 30 GHz. The oscillator is also used in the same way when transmitting signals, so that the signals are transmitted on the correct frequency. The design of the local oscillator is a hot topic among radio engineers. A poorly designed oscillator will ruin the performance of the whole receiver or transmitter. This thesis covers the design of a special type of oscillators, called digital controlled oscillators or DCO, operating at 30 GHz or higher. The frequency of these oscillators are determined by a digital word (ones and zeros), instead of using an analog voltage, which is traditionally used. Digital control results in greater flexibility and higher noise-resilience, but it also means that the frequency can’t be changed continuously, but rather in discrete steps. This discrete behavior will cause noise in the receiver. To minimize this noise, the frequency steps should be minimized. In this thesis, we have proposed a DCO design, operating at 85.5 GHz, which can be tuned almost 7 % in either direction. To our knowledge, no other DCO operates at such high frequencies. In the proposed oscillators the frequency steps are only 55 kHz apart, which is so small that its effect on the radio receiver can, with a good conscience, be ignored. This is achieved with a novel technique that makes tiny, tiny changes in the current that passes through the oscillator

    Recent research activities focused on improving the steady-state as well as the dynamic behavior of DC-DC converters for proper system performance, by proposing different design methods and control approaches with growing tendency to using digital implementation over analog practices. Because of the rapid advancement in semiconductors and microprocessor industry, digital control grew in popularity among PWM converters and is taking over analog techniques due to availability of fast speed microprocessors, flexibility and immunity to noise and environmental variations. Furthermore, increased interest in Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) makes it a convenient design platform for digitally controlled converters. The objective of this research is to propose new digital control schemes, aiming to improve the steady-state and transient responses of a high switching frequency FPGA-based digitally controlled DC-DC converters. The target is to achieve enhanced performance in terms of tight regulation with minimum power consumption and high efficiency at steady-state, as well as shorter settling time with optimal over- and undershoots during transients. The main task is to develop new and innovative digital PWM techniques in order to achieve: 1. Tight regulation at steady-state: by proposing high resolution DPWM architecture, based on Digital Clock Management (DCM) resources available on FPGA boards. The proposed architecture Window-Masked Segmented Digital Clock Manager-FPGA based Digital Pulse Width Modulator Technique, is designed to achieve high resolution operating at high switching frequencies with minimum power consumption. 2. Enhanced dynamic response: by applying a shift to the basic saw-tooth DPWM signal, in order to benefit from the best linearity and simplest architecture offered by the conventional counter-comparator DPWM. This proposed control scheme will help the compensator reach the steady-state value faster.     Measurement of the Loop Gain Frequency Response of Digitally Controlled Power Converters

    [EN] The study of the loop gain frequency response in a power converter is a powerful tool commonly used for the design of the controllers used in the control stage. As the control of medium- and high-power electronic converters is usually performed digitally, it is useful to find a method to measure the digital loop gains. The purpose of this paper is to present a method for properly measuring the loop gain frequency response of digitally controlled power converters by means of an analog frequency response analyzer (FRA). An analog sinusoidal reference signal generated by the FRA is injected through an analog-to-digital converter into the digital controller, and added to the discrete feedback signal.     Automatic oscillator frequency control system

    A frequency control system makes an initial correction of the frequency of its own timing circuit after comparison against a frequency of known accuracy and then sequentially checks and corrects the frequencies of several voltage controlled local oscillator circuits. The timing circuit initiates the machine cycles of a central processing unit which applies a frequency index to an input register in a modulo-sum frequency divider stage and enables a multiplexer to clock an accumulator register in the divider stage with a cyclical signal derived from the oscillator circuit being checked. Upon expiration of the interval, the processing unit compares the remainder held as the contents of the accumulator against a stored zero error constant and applies an appropriate correction word to a correction stage to shift the frequency of the oscillator being checked. A signal from the accumulator register may be used to drive a phase plane ROM and, with periodic shifts in the applied frequency index, to provide frequency shift keying of the resultant output signal. Interposition of a phase adder between the accumulator register and phase plane ROM permits phase shift keying of the output signal by periodic variation in the value of a phase index applied to one input of the phase adder

    Reconfigurable time interval measurement circuit incorporating a programmable gain time difference amplifier

    PhD ThesisAs further advances are made in semiconductor manufacturing technology the performance of circuits is continuously increasing. Unfortunately, as the technology node descends deeper into the nanometre region, achieving the potential performance gain is becoming more of a challenge; due not only to the effects of process variation but also to the reduced timing margins between signals within the circuit creating timing problems. Production Standard Automatic Test Equipment (ATE) is incapable of performing internal timing measurements due, first to the lack of accessibility and second to the overall timing accuracy of the tester which is grossly inadequate. To address these issue ‘on-chip’ time measurement circuits have been developed in a similar way that built in self-test (BIST) evolved for ‘on-chip’ logic testing. This thesis describes the design and analysis of three time amplifier circuits. The analysis undertaken considers the operational aspects related to gain and input dynamic range, together with the robustness of the circuits to the effects of process, voltage and temperature (PVT) variations. The design which had the best overall performance was subsequently compared to a benchmark design, which used the ‘buffer delay offset’ technique for time amplification, and showed a marked 6.5 times improvement on the dynamic range extending this from 40 ps to 300ps. The new design was also more robust to the effects of PVT variations. The new time amplifier design was further developed to include an adjustable gain capability which could be varied in steps of approximately 7.5 from 4 to 117. The time amplifier was then connected to a 32-stage tapped delay line to create a reconfigurable time measurement circuit with an adjustable resolution range from 15 down to 0.5 ps and a dynamic range from 480 down to 16 ps depending upon the gain setting. The overall footprint of the measurement circuit, together with its calibration module occupies an area of 0.026 mm2 The final circuit, overall, satisfied the main design criteria for ‘on-chip’ time measurement circuitry, namely, it has a wide dynamic range, high resolution, robust to the effects of PVT and has a small area overhead.Umm Al-Qura University

    Agile low phase noise radio-frequency sine wave generator applied to experiments on ultracold atoms

    We report on the frequency performance of a low cost (~500$) radio-frequency sine wave generator, using direct digital synthesis (DDS) and a field-programmable gate array (FPGA). The output frequency of the device may be changed dynamically to any arbitrary value ranging from DC to 10 MHz without any phase slip. Sampling effects are substantially reduced by a high sample rate, up to 1 MHz, and by a large memory length, more than 2.10^5 samples. By using a low noise external oscillator to clock the DDS, we demonstrate a phase noise as low as that of the master clock, that is at the level of -113 dB.rad^2/Hz at 1 Hz from the carrier for an output frequency of 3.75 MHz. The device is successfully used to confine an ultracold atomic cloud of rubidium 87 in a RF-based trap, and there is no extra heating from the RF source.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure
