    A hierarchical coloured Petri net model of fleet maintenance with cannibalisation

    Cannibalisation refers to a maintenance action where an unserviceable part in an inoperative platform is replaced by a serviceable part of the same type from another platform. It helps a fleet meet operational requirements when spares are in short supply but leads to more maintenance tasks to be carried out. In practice, cannibalisation may be performed in an unrestricted manner, or through the use of cannibalisation birds. A cannibalisation bird is a platform which is selected as the primary source of cannibalisation, while any inoperative platform can be a cannibalisation source under the unrestricted policy. In order to aid fleet managers in making cannibalisation-related decisions, this paper presents a hierarchical coloured Petri net (HCPN) model of a fleet operation and maintenance process which considers mission-oriented operation, multiple level maintenance, multiple cannibalisation policies (no cannibalisation, unrestricted cannibalisation and cannibalisation bird), maintenance scheduling and spare inventory management. The model is applied to an example fleet to compare the effects of different cannibalisation policies on fleet performance using a number of performance measures related to reliability and maintenance and to optimise the number of cannibalisation birds used and the length of time that a platform is taken as a cannibalisation bird for the fleet

    Using a Novel Hierarchical Coloured Petri Net to Model and Optimise Fleet Spare Inventory, Cannibalisation and Preventive Maintenance

    Spare part availability is crucial to restoring inoperative platforms to the working state. Platforms failing during operation undergo corrective maintenance to replace failed components with spares. To reduce the frequency of this unplanned, corrective maintenance, platforms are inspected periodically and degraded components preventively replaced. Maintenance delays occur when spares are unavailable but cannibalisation can reduce these delays by allowing working components to be removed from inoperative platforms and used to restore other inoperative platforms. Fleets can be deployed across multiple bases that are served by one or more depots. Failed components that cannot be repaired at a base are sent to a depot for repair, along with associated requests for spares, which are satisfied by depot inventories.The management of fleet corrective and preventive maintenance, cannibalisation, spare inventories, provision of spares to bases and depots, and response of the depot to spare requests is a complex problem for fleet maintenance managers and critical to ensuring acceptable fleet performance. This paper presents a novel hierarchical coloured Petri net (HCPN) model of a fleet spare inventory system, which accounts for these issues alongside fleet deployment and mission-oriented operation.     A coloured Petri net framework for modelling aircraft fleet maintenance

    The aircraft fleet maintenance organisation is responsible for keeping aircraft in a safe, efficient operating condition. Through optimising the use of maintenance resources and the implementation of maintenance activities, fleet maintenance management aims to maximise fleet performance by, for example, ensuring there is minimal deviation from the planned operational schedule,that the number of unexpected failures is minimised or that maintenance cost is kept at a minimum. To obtain overall fleet performance, the performance of individual aircraft must first be known. The calculation of aircraft performance requires an accurate model of the fleet operation and maintenance processes. This paper aims to introduce a framework that can be used to build aircraft fleet maintenance models. A variety of CPN (coloured Petri nets) models are established to represent fleet maintenance activities and maintenance management, as well as the factors that have a significant impact on fleet maintenance including fleet operation, aircraft failure logic and component failure processes. Such CPN models provide an ideal structured framework for Monte Carlo simulation analysis, within which calculations can be performed in order to determine numerous fleet reliability and maintenance performance measures

    Service-Oriented Computing for intelligent train maintenance

    The purpose of this work is to apply the servicization of enterprise information systems in maintenance, particularly in the management of the maintenance process of the component parts of trains. Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is an architectural approach that permits servicization since it provides a flexible set of design principles used during the modeling practices (abstraction and realization). With a view to supporting the model-driven engineering of software systems, Mode Driven Architecture (MDA) is a design approach delivering a set of guidelines for the configuring of specifications in systems development. Therefore, the combination of these two approaches can be fruitful to address the challenging issues the enterprise information system is facing today. Our study is based on a methodological approach using the MDA models for the automatic generation of web service. The case study concerns a Railways Maintenance Workshop (RMW) at Sidi Bel Abbes (Algeria). Finally, the information system for the management of maintenance of the component parts of passengers and baggage railcars, using the generated solution, is realized and deployed. This software helps to have better management of the RMW by the effective planning of interventions, improve performance by increasing reliability, traceability, and availability of the equipment (parts)

This paper presents a methodology to properly define the optimal structure and properties of a reduced Petri net that mimic the output of a reference Petri net model. The methodology is based on Approximate Bayesian Computation to infer the plausible values of the model parameters of the reduced model in a rigorous probabilistic way. Also, the method provides a numerical measure of the level of approximation of the reduced model structure, thus allowing the selection of the optimal reduced structure among a set of potential candidates. The suitability of the proposed methodology is illustrated using a simple illustrative example and a system reliability engineering case study, showing satisfactory results.     An integrated approach for remanufacturing job shop scheduling with routing alternatives.

    Remanufacturing is a practice of growing importance due to increasing environmental awareness and regulations. However, the stochastic natures inherent in the remanufacturing processes complicate its scheduling. This paper undertakes the challenge and presents a remanufacturing job shop scheduling approach by integrating alternative routing assignment and machine resource dispatching. A colored timed Petri net is introduced to model the dynamics of remanufacturing process, such as various process routings, uncertain operation times for cores, and machine resource conflicts. With the color attributes in Petri nets, two types of decision points, recovery routing selection and resource dispatching, are introduced and linked with places in CTPN model. With time attributes in Petri nets, the temporal aspect of recovery operations for cores as well as the evolution dynamics in cores\u27 operational stages is mathematically analyzed. A hybrid meta-heuristic algorithm embedded scheduling strategy over CTPN is proposed to search for the optimal recovery routings for worn cores and their recovery operation sequences on workstations, in minimizing the total production cost. The approach is demonstrated through the remanufacturing of used machine tool and its effectiveness is compared against another two cases: baseline case with fixed recovery process routings and case 2 using standard SA/MST

Storage technologies include a variety of solutions that have been used for different grid services, including frequency control, load following, and uninterrupted power supply. A recent interest is being triggered by the increasing grid balance requirements to integrate variable renewable sources and distributed generation. In parallel, lithium-ion batteries are experiencing a strong market expansion driven by an uptake of electric vehicles worldwide, which is leading to a strong decrease of production costs, making Li-ion batteries an attractive solution also for stationary storage applications
