Embedding Graphs under Centrality Constraints for Network Visualization
Visual rendering of graphs is a key task in the mapping of complex network
data. Although most graph drawing algorithms emphasize aesthetic appeal,
certain applications such as travel-time maps place more importance on
visualization of structural network properties. The present paper advocates two
graph embedding approaches with centrality considerations to comply with node
hierarchy. The problem is formulated first as one of constrained
multi-dimensional scaling (MDS), and it is solved via block coordinate descent
iterations with successive approximations and guaranteed convergence to a KKT
point. In addition, a regularization term enforcing graph smoothness is
incorporated with the goal of reducing edge crossings. A second approach
leverages the locally-linear embedding (LLE) algorithm which assumes that the
graph encodes data sampled from a low-dimensional manifold. Closed-form
solutions to the resulting centrality-constrained optimization problems are
determined yielding meaningful embeddings. Experimental results demonstrate the
efficacy of both approaches, especially for visualizing large networks on the

Learning to plan with uncertain topological maps
We train an agent to navigate in 3D environments using a hierarchical
strategy including a high-level graph based planner and a local policy. Our
main contribution is a data driven learning based approach for planning under
uncertainty in topological maps, requiring an estimate of shortest paths in
valued graphs with a probabilistic structure. Whereas classical symbolic
algorithms achieve optimal results on noise-less topologies, or optimal results
in a probabilistic sense on graphs with probabilistic structure, we aim to show
that machine learning can overcome missing information in the graph by taking
into account rich high-dimensional node features, for instance visual
information available at each location of the map. Compared to purely learned
neural white box algorithms, we structure our neural model with an inductive
bias for dynamic programming based shortest path algorithms, and we show that a
particular parameterization of our neural model corresponds to the Bellman-Ford
algorithm. By performing an empirical analysis of our method in simulated
photo-realistic 3D environments, we demonstrate that the inclusion of visual
features in the learned neural planner outperforms classical symbolic solutions

FPT-Algorithms for Computing Gromov-Hausdorff and Interleaving Distances Between Trees
The Gromov-Hausdorff distance is a natural way to measure the distortion between two metric spaces. However, there has been only limited algorithmic development to compute or approximate this distance. We focus on computing the Gromov-Hausdorff distance between two metric trees. Roughly speaking, a metric tree is a metric space that can be realized by the shortest path metric on a tree. Any finite tree with positive edge weight can be viewed as a metric tree where the weight is treated as edge length and the metric is the induced shortest path metric in the tree. Previously, Agarwal et al. showed that even for trees with unit edge length, it is NP-hard to approximate the Gromov-Hausdorff distance between them within a factor of 3. In this paper, we present a fixed-parameter tractable (FPT) algorithm that can approximate the Gromov-Hausdorff distance between two general metric trees within a multiplicative factor of 14.
Interestingly, the development of our algorithm is made possible by a connection between the Gromov-Hausdorff distance for metric trees and the interleaving distance for the so-called merge trees. The merge trees arise in practice naturally as a simple yet meaningful topological summary (it is a variant of the Reeb graphs and contour trees), and are of independent interest. It turns out that an exact or approximation algorithm for the interleaving distance leads to an approximation algorithm for the Gromov-Hausdorff distance. One of the key contributions of our work is that we re-define the interleaving distance in a way that makes it easier to develop dynamic programming approaches to compute it. We then present a fixed-parameter tractable algorithm to compute the interleaving distance between two merge trees exactly, which ultimately leads to an FPT-algorithm to approximate the Gromov-Hausdorff distance between two metric trees. This exact FPT-algorithm to compute the interleaving distance between merge trees is of interest itself, as it is known that it is NP-hard to approximate it within a factor of 3, and previously the best known algorithm has an approximation factor of O(sqrt{n}) even for trees with unit edge length

A branch-and-price algorithm for a hierarchical crew scheduling problem.
We describe a real-life problem arising at a crane rental company. This problem is a generalization of the basic crew scheduling problem given in Mingozzi et al. and Beasley and Cao. We formulate the problem as an integer programming problem and establish ties with the integer multicommodity flow problem and the hierarchical interval scheduling problem. After establishing the complexity of the problem we propose a branch-and-price algorithm to solve it. We test this algorithm on a limited number of real-life instances.Scheduling;
