    A heuristic solution method for node routing based solid waste collection problems

    This paper considers a real world waste collection problem in which glass, metal, plastics, or paper is brought to certain waste collection points by the citizens of a certain region. The collection of this waste from the collection points is therefore a node routing problem. The waste is delivered to special sites, so called intermediate facilities (IF), that are typically not identical with the vehicle depot. Since most waste collection points need not be visited every day, a planning period of several days has to be considered. In this context three related planning problems are considered. First, the periodic vehicle routing problem with intermediate facilities (PVRP-IF) is considered and an exact problem formulation is proposed. A set of benchmark instances is developed and an efficient hybrid solution method based on variable neighborhood search and dynamic programming is presented. Second, in a real world application the PVRP-IF is modified by permitting the return of partly loaded vehicles to the depots and by considering capacity limits at the IF. An average improvement of 25% in the routing cost is obtained compared to the current solution. Finally, a different but related problem, the so called multi-depot vehicle routing problem with inter-depot routes (MDVRPI) is considered. In this problem class just a single day is considered and the depots can act as an intermediate facility only at the end of a tour. For this problem several instances and benchmark solutions are available. It is shown that the algorithm outperforms all previously published metaheuristics for this problem class and finds the best solutions for all available benchmark instances

    Waste generation is an issue which has caused wide public concern in modern societies, not only for the quantitative rise of the amount of waste generated, but also for the increasing complexity of some products and components. Waste collection is a highly relevant activity in the reverse logistics system and how to collect waste in an efficient way is an area that needs to be improved. This paper analyzes the major contribution about Waste Collection Vehicle Routing Problem (WCVRP) in literature. Based on a classification of waste collection (residential, commercial and industrial), firstly the key findings for these three types of waste collection are presented. Therefore, according to the model (Node Routing Problems and Arc Routing problems) used to represent WCVRP, different methods and techniques are analyzed in this paper to solve WCVRP. This paper attempts to serve as a roadmap of research literature produced in the field of WCVRP

    Application of a Modified ACO Algorithm for Optimizing Routes and Externality Effect of Solid Waste Management

    To improve solid waste management and maintain its sustainability, it is important to reduce both the solid waste operational cost which includes the monetary value of distances covered and the externality effects of solid waste management. Therefore, this paper presents an application of a modified Ant Colony System algorithm to a bi-objective model for solid waste management in the Shama District in the Western Region of Ghana. The objective is to optimize route lengths and externality effects of solid waste management. Data on route lengths and population of communities along the routes were collected from 20 communities in the Shama Distric. Externality effect was measured by considering the population of the communities along the routes, the cost of treating a common cold subject to the assumption of two percent of the population being affected by the externality effect. The implemented algorithm has demonstrated the bi-objective optimal solution of route length (km) and externality effect (GHS) of (11, 2100) achievable on the path , which respectively represents a path linking the following communities: Aboadze, Abuesi Assorko Essaman, Beposo, Bosomdo and Fawomanye. There is therefore the need to ensure that the communities involved are linked with good roads

    Scheduling of Solid Waste Collection Routes

    Routing of solid waste collection vehicles in Nigeria poses a challenging task because of attitudinal and haphazard infrastructure problems to contend with. The objective is to minimize the overall cost, which was essentially based on the distance travelled by collection vehicles. The study proposes heuristic methods to generate feasible solution to an extended capacitated Chinese Postman Problem (CCPP) in undirected network. The heuristic procedure consist of “route first, cluster second” and “cluster first, route second” and was applied to scheduling solid waste collection problems in two cities – Abuja and Onitsha. The two techniques were compared and with the existing schedule with respect to cost, efficiency, and distance travelled. A cost model was developed to compare the quality of solution derived. The adoption of the proposed heuristics in Onitsha resulted in reduction of the number of existing vehicles by three, 325.90(or7.65325.90 (or 7.65%) in refuse collection cost and 28.17km (or 6.03%) in vehicle distance travelled per day. In Abuja, the heuristics produced routes which could save about 19.08km travel per day and 31.10 (or 21.09%) of collection cost per day. Efficiency in refuse collection was increased from 86% to 98% in Abuja and 75% to 95% in Onitsha. The results revealed a good performance of the proposed heuristic methods which will find useful applications in other areas of vehicle scheduling

    AbstractCollection of waste is an important logistic activity within any city. In this paper we study how to collect waste in an efficient way. We study the Waste Collection Vehicle Routing Problem with Time Window which is concerned with finding cost optimal routes for garbage trucks such that all garbage bins are emptied and the waste is driven to disposal sites while respecting customer time windows and ensuring that drivers are given the breaks that the law requires. We propose an adaptive large neighborhood search algorithm for solving the problem and illustrate the usefulness of the algorithm by showing that the algorithm can improve the objective of a set of instances from the literature as well as for instances provided by a Danish garbage collection company

    Optimization of Location-Routing for the Waste Household Appliances Recycling Logistics under the Uncertain Condition

    Waste household appliances and electronic products usually contain harmful substances which need scientific and reasonable collection, classification, processing, recovery and disposal to achieve sustainable and effective recycling and utilization. In recent years, due to the poor management of waste household appliances recycling logistics system, safety accidents occur frequently, which seriously harm the health and life safety of the society. This paper studies the risk management of recycling waste household appliances under uncertain conditions and establishes a risk measurement model under fuzzy population density. Considering the multi-stage and classification diversity of waste household appliances recycling logistics, the multi-objective location routing model and location - routing model are established respectively. Based on the model complexity analysis, the solution method of multi-objective model is designed. Finally, the validity of the model and algorithm is verified by examples and tests
