Reasoning & Querying – State of the Art
Various query languages for Web and Semantic Web data, both for practical use and as an area of research in the scientific community, have emerged in recent years. At the same time, the broad adoption of the internet where keyword search is used in many applications, e.g. search engines, has familiarized casual users with using keyword queries to retrieve information on the internet. Unlike this easy-to-use querying, traditional query languages require knowledge of the language itself as well as of the data to be queried. Keyword-based query languages for XML and RDF bridge the gap between the two, aiming at enabling simple querying of semi-structured data, which is relevant e.g. in the context of the emerging Semantic Web. Answering Complex Questions by Joining Multi-Document Evidence with Quasi Knowledge Graphs
Direct answering of questions that involve multiple entities and relations is a challenge for text-based QA. This problem is most pronounced when answers can be found only by joining evidence from multiple documents. Curated knowledge graphs (KGs) may yield good answers, but are limited by their inherent incompleteness and potential staleness. This paper presents QUEST, a method that can answer complex questions directly from textual sources on-the-fly, by computing similarity joins over partial results from different documents. Our method is completely unsupervised, avoiding training-data bottlenecks and being able to cope with rapidly evolving ad hoc topics and formulation style in user questions. QUEST builds a noisy quasi KG with node and edge weights, consisting of dynamically retrieved entity names and relational phrases. It augments this graph with types and semantic alignments, and computes the best answers by an algorithm for Group Steiner Trees. We evaluate QUEST on benchmarks of complex questions, and show that it substantially outperforms state-of-the-art baselines
Bridging the Semantic Gap with SQL Query Logs in Natural Language Interfaces to Databases
A critical challenge in constructing a natural language interface to database
(NLIDB) is bridging the semantic gap between a natural language query (NLQ) and
the underlying data. Two specific ways this challenge exhibits itself is
through keyword mapping and join path inference. Keyword mapping is the task of
mapping individual keywords in the original NLQ to database elements (such as
relations, attributes or values). It is challenging due to the ambiguity in
mapping the user's mental model and diction to the schema definition and
contents of the underlying database. Join path inference is the process of
selecting the relations and join conditions in the FROM clause of the final SQL
query, and is difficult because NLIDB users lack the knowledge of the database
schema or SQL and therefore cannot explicitly specify the intermediate tables
and joins needed to construct a final SQL query. In this paper, we propose
leveraging information from the SQL query log of a database to enhance the
performance of existing NLIDBs with respect to these challenges. We present a
system Templar that can be used to augment existing NLIDBs. Our extensive
experimental evaluation demonstrates the effectiveness of our approach, leading
up to 138% improvement in top-1 accuracy in existing NLIDBs by leveraging SQL

Keyword Search on RDF Graphs - A Query Graph Assembly Approach
Keyword search provides ordinary users an easy-to-use interface for querying
RDF data. Given the input keywords, in this paper, we study how to assemble a
query graph that is to represent user's query intention accurately and
efficiently. Based on the input keywords, we first obtain the elementary query
graph building blocks, such as entity/class vertices and predicate edges. Then,
we formally define the query graph assembly (QGA) problem. Unfortunately, we
prove theoretically that QGA is a NP-complete problem. In order to solve that,
we design some heuristic lower bounds and propose a bipartite graph
matching-based best-first search algorithm. The algorithm's time complexity is
, where is the number of the keywords and is a
tunable parameter, i.e., the maximum number of candidate entity/class vertices
and predicate edges allowed to match each keyword. Although QGA is intractable,
both and are small in practice. Furthermore, the algorithm's time
complexity does not depend on the RDF graph size, which guarantees the good
scalability of our system in large RDF graphs. Experiments on DBpedia and
Freebase confirm the superiority of our system on both effectiveness and
efficiency
Conditional Reliability in Uncertain Graphs
Network reliability is a well-studied problem that requires to measure the
probability that a target node is reachable from a source node in a
probabilistic (or uncertain) graph, i.e., a graph where every edge is assigned
a probability of existence. Many approaches and problem variants have been
considered in the literature, all assuming that edge-existence probabilities
are fixed. Nevertheless, in real-world graphs, edge probabilities typically
depend on external conditions. In metabolic networks a protein can be converted
into another protein with some probability depending on the presence of certain
enzymes. In social influence networks the probability that a tweet of some user
will be re-tweeted by her followers depends on whether the tweet contains
specific hashtags. In transportation networks the probability that a network
segment will work properly or not might depend on external conditions such as
weather or time of the day. In this paper we overcome this limitation and focus
on conditional reliability, that is assessing reliability when edge-existence
probabilities depend on a set of conditions. In particular, we study the
problem of determining the k conditions that maximize the reliability between
two nodes. We deeply characterize our problem and show that, even employing
polynomial-time reliability-estimation methods, it is NP-hard, does not admit
any PTAS, and the underlying objective function is non-submodular. We then
devise a practical method that targets both accuracy and efficiency. We also
study natural generalizations of the problem with multiple source and target
nodes. An extensive empirical evaluation on several large, real-life graphs
demonstrates effectiveness and scalability of the proposed methods.Comment: 14 pages, 13 figure
Keyword-aware Optimal Route Search
Identifying a preferable route is an important problem that finds
applications in map services. When a user plans a trip within a city, the user
may want to find "a most popular route such that it passes by shopping mall,
restaurant, and pub, and the travel time to and from his hotel is within 4
hours." However, none of the algorithms in the existing work on route planning
can be used to answer such queries. Motivated by this, we define the problem of
keyword-aware optimal route query, denoted by KOR, which is to find an optimal
route such that it covers a set of user-specified keywords, a specified budget
constraint is satisfied, and an objective score of the route is optimal. The
problem of answering KOR queries is NP-hard. We devise an approximation
algorithm OSScaling with provable approximation bounds. Based on this
algorithm, another more efficient approximation algorithm BucketBound is
proposed. We also design a greedy approximation algorithm. Results of empirical
studies show that all the proposed algorithms are capable of answering KOR
queries efficiently, while the BucketBound and Greedy algorithms run faster.
The empirical studies also offer insight into the accuracy of the proposed
