    Adaptive Interference Mitigation in GPS Receivers

    Satellite navigation systems (GNSS) are among the most complex radio-navigation systems, providing positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) information. A growing number of public sector and commercial applications rely on the GNSS PNT service to support business growth, technical development, and the day-to-day operation of technology and socioeconomic systems. As GNSS signals have inherent limitations, they are highly vulnerable to intentional and unintentional interference. GNSS signals have spectral power densities far below ambient thermal noise. Consequently, GNSS receivers must meet high standards of reliability and integrity to be used within a broad spectrum of applications. GNSS receivers must employ effective interference mitigation techniques to ensure robust, accurate, and reliable PNT service. This research aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Adaptive Notch Filter (ANF), a precorrelation mitigation technique that can be used to excise Continuous Wave Interference (CWI), hop-frequency and chirp-type interferences from GPS L1 signals. To mitigate unwanted interference, state-of-the-art ANFs typically adjust a single parameter, the notch centre frequency, and zeros are constrained extremely close to unity. Because of this, the notch centre frequency converges slowly to the target frequency. During this slow converge period, interference leaks into the acquisition block, thus sabotaging the operation of the acquisition block. Furthermore, if the CWI continuously hops within the GPS L1 in-band region, the subsequent interference frequency is locked onto after a delay, which means constant interference occurs in the receiver throughout the delay period. This research contributes to the field of interference mitigation at GNSS's receiver end using adaptive signal processing, predominately for GPS. This research can be divided into three stages. I first designed, modelled and developed a Simulink-based GPS L1 signal simulator, providing a homogenous test signal for existing and proposed interference mitigation algorithms. Simulink-based GPS L1 signal simulator provided great flexibility to change various parameters to generate GPS L1 signal under different conditions, e.g. Doppler Shift, code phase delay and amount of propagation degradation. Furthermore, I modelled three acquisition schemes for GPS signals and tested GPS L1 signals acquisition via coherent and non-coherent integration methods. As a next step, I modelled different types of interference signals precisely and implemented and evaluated existing adaptive notch filters in MATLAB in terms of Carrier to Noise Density (\u1d436/\u1d4410), Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR), Peak Degradation Metric, and Mean Square Error (MSE) at the output of the acquisition module in order to create benchmarks. Finally, I designed, developed and implemented a novel algorithm that simultaneously adapts both coefficients in lattice-based ANF. Mathematically, I derived the full-gradient term for the notch's bandwidth parameter adaptation and developed a framework for simultaneously adapting both coefficients of a lattice-based adaptive notch filter. I evaluated the performance of existing and proposed interference mitigation techniques under different types of interference signals. Moreover, I critically analysed different internal signals within the ANF structure in order to develop a new threshold parameter that resets the notch bandwidth at the start of each subsequent interference frequency. As a result, I further reduce the complexity of the structural implementation of lattice-based ANF, allowing for efficient hardware realisation and lower computational costs. It is concluded from extensive simulation results that the proposed fully adaptive lattice-based provides better interference mitigation performance and superior convergence properties to target frequency compared to traditional ANF algorithms. It is demonstrated that by employing the proposed algorithm, a receiver is able to operate with a higher dynamic range of JNR than is possible with existing methods. This research also presents the design and MATLAB implementation of a parameterisable Complex Adaptive Notch Filer (CANF). Present analysis on higher order CANF for detecting and mitigating various types of interference for complex baseband GPS L1 signals. In the end, further research was conducted to suppress interference in the GPS L1 signal by exploiting autocorrelation properties and discarding some portion of the main lobe of the GPS L1 signal. It is shown that by removing 30% spectrum of the main lobe, either from left, right, or centre, the GPS L1 signal is still acquirable

    Generalised predictive current-mode control of passive front-end boost-type converters

    In this work, an average current-mode control strategy based on a generalised predictive control formulation for passive front-end three-phase boost-type converters is proposed. A novel design procedure for the generalised predictive control strategy is introduced which considers both the cost function and disturbance model as design parameters to set the controller's dynamic response and robustness against component variations. A maximum robustness criterion was used for achieving stability up to a 70% inductance reduction with maximum possible bandwidth. The proposed strategy was compared against both a PI and a predictive deadbeat average current-mode control using both simulations and experimental results on a (Formula presented.) converter. The generalised predictive control presented less performance variations between different operating points than the PI controller. Also, the proposed strategy is more robust than the predictive deadbeat strategy, showing a better transient response with a 50% inductance reduction and remained stable for a 71% inductance reduction, while the predictive deadbeat could not. Finally, the proposed strategy achieved a 1.4% output voltage load transient response for a (Formula presented.) load power step, and a 2.8% output voltage line transient response for a (Formula presented.) input voltage step, outperforming existing state-of-the-art strategies.Fil: Judewicz, Marcos.     Integrated Microwave Photonic Processors using Waveguide Mesh Cores

    Integrated microwave photonics changes the scaling laws of information and communication systems offering architectural choices that combine photonics with electronics to optimize performance, power, footprint and cost. Application Specific Photonic Integrated Circuits, where particular circuits/chips are designed to optimally perform particular functionalities, require a considerable number of design and fabrication iterations leading to long-development times and costly implementations. A different approach inspired by electronic Field Programmable Gate Arrays is the programmable Microwave Photonic processor, where a common hardware implemented by the combination of microwave, photonic and electronic subsystems, realizes different functionalities through programming. Here, we propose the first-ever generic-purpose Microwave Photonic processor concept and architecture. This versatile processor requires a powerful end-to-end field-based analytical model to optimally configure all their subsystems as well as to evaluate their performance in terms of the radiofrequency gain, noise and dynamic range. Therefore, we develop a generic model for integrated Microwave Photonics systems. The key element of the processor is the reconfigurable optical core. It requires high flexibility and versatility to enable reconfigurable interconnections between subsystems as well as the synthesis of photonic integrated circuits. For this element, we focus on a 2-dimensional photonic waveguide mesh based on the interconnection of tunable couplers. Within the framework of this Thesis, we have proposed two novel interconnection schemes, aiming for a mesh design with a high level of versatility. Focusing on the hexagonal waveguide mesh, we explore the synthesis of a high variety of photonic integrated circuits and particular Microwave Photonics applications that can potentially be performed on a single hardware. In addition, we report the first-ever demonstration of such reconfigurable waveguide mesh in silicon. We demonstrate a world-record number of functionalities on a single photonic integrated circuit enabling over 30 different functionalities from the 100 that could be potentially obtained with a simple seven hexagonal cell structure. The resulting device can be applied to different fields including communications, chemical and biomedical sensing, signal processing, multiprocessor networks as well as quantum information systems. Our work is an important step towards this paradigm and sets the base for a new era of generic-purpose photonic integrated systems.Los dispositivos integrados de fotónica de microondas ofrecen soluciones optimizadas para los sistemas de información y comunicación. Generalmente, están compuestos por diferentes arquitecturas en las que subsistemas ópticos y electrónicos se integran para optimizar las prestaciones, el consumo, el tamaño y el coste del dispositivo final. Hasta ahora, los circuitos/chips de propósito específico se han diseñado para proporcionar una funcionalidad concreta, requiriendo así un número considerable de iteraciones entre las etapas de diseño, fabricación y medida, que origina tiempos de desarrollo largos y costes demasiado elevados. Una alternativa, inspirada por las FPGA (del inglés Field Programmable Gate Array), es el procesador fotónico programable. Este dispositivo combina la integración de subsistemas de microondas, ópticos y electrónicos para realizar, mediante la programación de los mismos y sus interconexiones, diferentes funcionalidades. En este trabajo, proponemos por primera vez el concepto del procesador de propósito general, así como su arquitectura. Además, con el fin de diseñar, optimizar y evaluar las prestaciones básicas del dispositivo, hemos desarrollado un modelo analítico extremo a extremo basado en las componentes del campo electromagnético. El modelo desarrollado proporciona como resultado la ganancia, el ruido y el rango dinámico global para distintas configuraciones de modulación y detección, en función de los subsistemas y su configuración. El elemento principal del procesador es su núcleo óptico reconfigurable. Éste requiere un alto grado de flexibilidad y versatilidad para reconfigurar las interconexiones entre los distintos subsistemas y para sintetizar los circuitos para el procesado óptico. Para este subsistema, proponemos el diseño de guías de onda reconfigurables para la creación de mallados bidimensionales. En el marco de esta tesis, hemos propuesto dos nuevos nodos de interconexión óptica para mallas reconfigurables, con el objetivo de obtener un mayor grado de versatilidad. Una vez escogida la malla hexagonal para el núcleo del procesador, hemos analizado la configuración de un gran número de circuitos fotónicos integrados y de funcionalidades de fotónica de microondas. El trabajo se ha completado con la demonstración de la primera malla reconfigurable integrada en un chip de silicio, demostrando además la síntesis de 30 de las 100 funcionalidades que potencialmente se pueden obtener con la malla diseñada compuesta de 7 celdas hexagonales. Este hecho supone un record frente a los sistemas de propósito específico. El sistema puede aplicarse en diferentes campos como las comunicaciones, los sensores químicos y biomédicos, el procesado de señales, la gestión y procesamiento de redes y los sistemas de información cuánticos. El conjunto del trabajo realizado representa un paso importante en la evolución de este paradigma, y sienta las bases para una nueva era de dispositivos fotónicos de propósito general.Els dispositius integrats de Fotònica de Microones oferixen solucions optimitzades per als sistemes d'informació i comunicació. Generalment, estan compostos per diferents arquitectures en què subsistemes òptics i electrònics s'integren per a optimitzar les prestacions, el consum, la grandària i el cost del dispositiu final. Fins ara, els circuits/xips de propòsit específic s'han dissenyat per a proporcionar una funcionalitat concreta, requerint així un nombre considerable d'iteracions entre les etapes de disseny, fabricació i mesura, que origina temps de desenrotllament llargs i costos massa elevats. Una alternativa, inspirada per les FPGA (de l'anglés Field Programmable Gate Array), és el processador fotònic programable. Este dispositiu combina la integració de subsistemes de microones, òptics i electrònics per a realitzar, per mitjà de la programació dels mateixos i les seues interconnexions, diferents funcionalitats. En este treball proposem per primera vegada el concepte del processador de propòsit general, així com la seua arquitectura. A més, a fi de dissenyar, optimitzar i avaluar les prestacions bàsiques del dispositiu, hem desenrotllat un model analític extrem a extrem basat en els components del camp electromagnètic. El model desenrotllat proporciona com resultat el guany, el soroll i el rang dinàmic global per a distintes configuracions de modulació i detecció, en funció dels subsistemes i la seua configuració. L'element principal del processador és el seu nucli òptic reconfigurable.     Commande robuste et calibrage des systèmes de contrôle actif de vibrations

    Dans cette thèse, nous présentons des solutions pour la conception des systèmes de contrôle actif de vibrations. Dans la première partie, des méthodes de contrôle par action anticipatrice (feedforward) sont développées. Celles-ci sont dédiées à la suppression des perturbations bande large en utilisant une image de la perturbation mesurée par un deuxième capteur, en amont de la variable de performance à minimiser. Les algorithmes présentés dans cette mémoire sont conçus pour réaliser de bonnes performances et maintenir la stabilité du système en présence du couplage positif interne qui apparaît entre le signal de commande et l'image de la perturbation. Les principales contributions de cette partie sont l'assouplissement de la condition de Stricte Positivité Réelle (SPR) par l'utilisation des algorithmes d'adaptation Intégrale + Proportionnelle et le développement de compensateurs à action anticipatrice (feedforward) sur la base de la paramétrisation Youla-Kučera. La deuxième partie de la thèse concerne le rejet des perturbations bande étroite par contre-réaction adaptative (feedback). Une méthode d'adaptation indirecte est proposée pour le rejet de plusieurs perturbations bande étroite en utilisant des filtres Stop-bande et la paramétrisation Youla-Kučera. Cette méthode utilise des Filtres Adaptatifs à Encoche en cascade pour estimer les fréquences de perturbations sinusoïdales puis des Filtres Stop-bande pour introduire des atténuations aux fréquences estimées. Les algorithmes sont vérifiés et validés sur un dispositif expérimental disponible au sein du département Automatique du laboratoire GIPSA-Lab de Grenoble.In this thesis, solutions for the design of robust Active Vibration Control (AVC) systems are presented. The thesis report is composed of two parts. In the first one, feedforward adaptive methods are developed. They are dedicated to the suppression of large band disturbances and use a measurement, correlated with the disturbance, obtained upstream from the performance variable by the use of a second transducer. The algorithms presented in this thesis are designed to achieve good performances and to maintain system stability in the presence of the internal feedback coupling which appears between the control signal and the image of the disturbance. The main contributions in this part are the relaxation of the Strictly Positive Real (SPR) condition appearing in the stability analysis of the algorithms by use of Integral + Proportional adaptation algorithms and the development of feedforward compensators for noise or vibration reduction based on the Youla-Kučera parameterization. The second part of this thesis is concerned with the negative feedback rejection of narrow band disturbances. An indirect adaptation method for the rejection of multiple narrow band disturbances using Band-Stop Filters (BSF) and the Youla-Kučera parameterization is presented. This method uses cascaded Adaptive Notch Filters (ANF) to estimate the frequencies of the disturbances' sinusoids and then, Band-stop Filters are used to shape the output sensitivity function independently, reducing the effect of each narrow band signal in the disturbance.
