    A concise guide to existing and emerging vehicle routing problem variants

    Vehicle routing problems have been the focus of extensive research over the past sixty years, driven by their economic importance and their theoretical interest. The diversity of applications has motivated the study of a myriad of problem variants with different attributes. In this article, we provide a concise overview of existing and emerging problem variants. Models are typically refined along three lines: considering more relevant objectives and performance metrics, integrating vehicle routing evaluations with other tactical decisions, and capturing fine-grained yet essential aspects of modern supply chains. We organize the main problem attributes within this structured framework. We discuss recent research directions and pinpoint current shortcomings, recent successes, and emerging challenges

    An Integrated Strategy for a Production Planning and Warehouse Layout Problem: Modeling and Solution Approaches

    We study a real-world production warehousing case, where the company always faces the challenge to find available space for their products and to manage the items in the warehouse. To resolve the problem, an integrated strategy that combines warehouse layout with the capacitated lot-sizing problem is presented, which have been traditionally treated separately in the existing literature. We develop a mixed integer linear programming model to formulate the integrated optimization problem with the objective of minimizing the total cost of production and warehouse operations. The problem with real data is a large-scale instance that is beyond the capability of optimization solvers. A novel Lagrangian relax-and-fix heuristic approach and its variants are proposed to solve the large-scale problem. The preliminary numerical results from the heuristic approaches are reported

    Integrated production and inventory routing planning of oxygen supply chains

    In this work, we address a production and inventory routing problem for a liquid oxygen supply chain comprising production facilities, distribution network, and distribution resources. The key decisions of the problem involve production levels of production plants, delivery schedule and routing through heterogeneous vehicles, and inventory strategies for national stock-out prevention. Due to the problem complexity, we propose a two-level hybrid solution approach that solves the problem using both exact and metaheuristic methods. At the upper level, we develop a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model that determines production and inventory decisions and customer allocation. In the lower level, the original problem is reduced to several multi-trip heterogeneous vehicle routing problems by fixing the optimal production, inventory, and allocation decisions and clustering customers. A well-recognised metaheuristic, guided local search method, is adapted to solve the low-level routing problems. A real-world case study in the UK illustrates the applicability and effectiveness of the proposed optimisation framework

    Dynamic temporary blood facility location-allocation during and post-disaster periods

    The key objective of this study is to develop a tool (hybridization or integration of different techniques) for locating the temporary blood banks during and post-disaster conditions that could serve the hospitals with minimum response time. We have used temporary blood centers, which must be located in such a way that it is able to serve the demand of hospitals in nearby region within a shorter duration. We are locating the temporary blood centres for which we are minimizing the maximum distance with hospitals. We have used Tabu search heuristic method to calculate the optimal number of temporary blood centres considering cost components. In addition, we employ Bayesian belief network to prioritize the factors for locating the temporary blood facilities. Workability of our model and methodology is illustrated using a case study including blood centres and hospitals surrounding Jamshedpur city. Our results shows that at-least 6 temporary blood facilities are required to satisfy the demand of blood during and post-disaster periods in Jamshedpur. The results also show that that past disaster conditions, response time and convenience for access are the most important factors for locating the temporary blood facilities during and post-disaster periods
