Semantics for Probabilistic Inference
A number of writers(Joseph Halpern and Fahiem Bacchus among them) have
offered semantics for formal languages in which inferences concerning
probabilities can be made. Our concern is different. This paper provides a
formalization of nonmonotonic inferences in which the conclusion is supported
only to a certain degree. Such inferences are clearly 'invalid' since they must
allow the falsity of a conclusion even when the premises are true.
Nevertheless, such inferences can be characterized both syntactically and
semantically. The 'premises' of probabilistic arguments are sets of statements
(as in a database or knowledge base), the conclusions categorical statements in
the language. We provide standards for both this form of inference, for which
high probability is required, and for an inference in which the conclusion is

A Boxology of Design Patterns for Hybrid Learning and Reasoning Systems
We propose a set of compositional design patterns to describe a large variety
of systems that combine statistical techniques from machine learning with
symbolic techniques from knowledge representation. As in other areas of
computer science (knowledge engineering, software engineering, ontology
engineering, process mining and others), such design patterns help to
systematize the literature, clarify which combinations of techniques serve
which purposes, and encourage re-use of software components. We have validated
our set of compositional design patterns against a large body of recent

There Is No Pure Empirical Reasoning
The justificatory force of empirical reasoning always depends upon the existence of some synthetic, a priori justification. The reasoner must begin with justified, substantive constraints on both the prior probability of the conclusion and certain conditional probabilities; otherwise, all possible degrees of belief in the conclusion are left open given the premises. Such constraints cannot in general be empirically justified, on pain of infinite regress. Nor does subjective Bayesianism offer a way out for the empiricist. Despite often-cited convergence theorems, subjective Bayesians cannot hold that any empirical hypothesis is ever objectively justified in the relevant sense. Rationalism is thus the only alternative to an implausible skepticism
Compositional bisimulation metric reasoning with Probabilistic Process Calculi
We study which standard operators of probabilistic process calculi allow for
compositional reasoning with respect to bisimulation metric semantics. We argue
that uniform continuity (generalizing the earlier proposed property of
non-expansiveness) captures the essential nature of compositional reasoning and
allows now also to reason compositionally about recursive processes. We
characterize the distance between probabilistic processes composed by standard
process algebra operators. Combining these results, we demonstrate how
compositional reasoning about systems specified by continuous process algebra
operators allows for metric assume-guarantee like performance validation
A probabilistic analysis of argument cogency
This paper offers a probabilistic treatment of the conditions for argument cogency as endorsed in informal logic: acceptability, relevance, and sufficiency. Treating a natural language argument as a reason-claim-complex, our analysis identifies content features of defeasible argument on which the RSA conditions depend, namely: change in the commitment to the reason, the reason’s sensitivity and selectivity to the claim, one’s prior commitment to the claim, and the contextually determined thresholds of acceptability for reasons and for claims. Results contrast with, and may indeed serve to correct, the informal understanding and applications of the RSA criteria concerning their conceptual dependence, their function as update-thresholds, and their status as obligatory rather than permissive norms, but also show how these formal and informal normative approachs can in fact align
