On the periodic behavior of real-time schedulers on identical multiprocessor platforms
This paper is proposing a general periodicity result concerning any
deterministic and memoryless scheduling algorithm (including
non-work-conserving algorithms), for any context, on identical multiprocessor
platforms. By context we mean the hardware architecture (uniprocessor,
multicore), as well as task constraints like critical sections, precedence
constraints, self-suspension, etc. Since the result is based only on the
releases and deadlines, it is independent from any other parameter. Note that
we do not claim that the given interval is minimal, but it is an upper bound
for any cycle of any feasible schedule provided by any deterministic and
memoryless scheduler
Complexity of scheduling multiprocessor tasks with prespecified processor allocations
We investigate the computational complexity of scheduling multiprocessor tasks with prespecified processor allocations. We consider two criteria: minimizing schedule length and minimizing the sum of the task completion times. In addition, we investigate the complexity of problems when precedence constraints or release dates are involved
How Unsplittable-Flow-Covering helps Scheduling with Job-Dependent Cost Functions
Generalizing many well-known and natural scheduling problems, scheduling with
job-specific cost functions has gained a lot of attention recently. In this
setting, each job incurs a cost depending on its completion time, given by a
private cost function, and one seeks to schedule the jobs to minimize the total
sum of these costs. The framework captures many important scheduling objectives
such as weighted flow time or weighted tardiness. Still, the general case as
well as the mentioned special cases are far from being very well understood
yet, even for only one machine. Aiming for better general understanding of this
problem, in this paper we focus on the case of uniform job release dates on one
machine for which the state of the art is a 4-approximation algorithm. This is
true even for a special case that is equivalent to the covering version of the
well-studied and prominent unsplittable flow on a path problem, which is
interesting in its own right. For that covering problem, we present a
quasi-polynomial time -approximation algorithm that yields an
-approximation for the above scheduling problem. Moreover, for
the latter we devise the best possible resource augmentation result regarding
speed: a polynomial time algorithm which computes a solution with \emph{optimal
}cost at speedup. Finally, we present an elegant QPTAS for the
special case where the cost functions of the jobs fall into at most
many classes. This algorithm allows the jobs even to have up to many
distinct release dates.Comment: 2 pages, 1 figur
Computation of Buffer Capacities for Throughput Constrained and Data Dependent Inter-Task Communication
Streaming applications are often implemented as task graphs. Currently, techniques exist to derive buffer capacities that guarantee satisfaction of a throughput constraint for task graphs in which the inter-task communication is data-independent, i.e. the amount of data produced and consumed is independent of the data values in the processed stream. This paper presents a technique to compute buffer capacities that satisfy a throughput constraint for task graphs with data dependent inter-task communication, given that the task graph is a chain. We demonstrate the applicability of the approach by computing buffer capacities for an MP3 playback application, of which the MP3 decoder has a variable consumption rate. We are not aware of alternative approaches to compute buffer capacities that guarantee satisfaction of the throughput constraint for this application
Some complexity and approximation results for coupled-tasks scheduling problem according to topology
We consider the makespan minimization coupled-tasks problem in presence of
compatibility constraints with a specified topology. In particular, we focus on
stretched coupled-tasks, i.e. coupled-tasks having the same sub-tasks execution
time and idle time duration. We study several problems in framework of classic
complexity and approximation for which the compatibility graph is bipartite
(star, chain,. . .). In such a context, we design some efficient
polynomial-time approximation algorithms for an intractable scheduling problem
according to some parameters
