Simulation in Automated Guided Vehicle System Design
The intense global competition that manufacturing companies face today results in an
increase of product variety and shorter product life cycles. One response to this threat is
agile manufacturing concepts. This requires materials handling systems that are agile
and capable of reconfiguration. As competition in the world marketplace becomes
increasingly customer-driven, manufacturing environments must be highly
reconfigurable and responsive to accommodate product and process changes, with rigid,
static automation systems giving way to more flexible types.
Automated Guided Vehicle Systems (AGVS) have such capabilities and AGV
functionality has been developed to improve flexibility and diminish the traditional
disadvantages of AGV-systems. The AGV-system design is however a multi-faceted
problem with a large number of design factors of which many are correlating and
interdependent. Available methods and techniques exhibit problems in supporting the
whole design process. A research review of the work reported on AGVS development in
combination with simulation revealed that of 39 papers only four were industrially
related. Most work was on the conceptual design phase, but little has been reported on
the detailed simulation of AGVS.
Semi-autonomous vehicles (SA V) are an innovative concept to overcome the problems
of inflexible -systems and to improve materials handling functionality. The SA V
concept introduces a higher degree of autonomy in industrial AGV -systems with the
man-in-the-Ioop. The introduction of autonomy in industrial applications is approached
by explicitly controlling the level of autonomy at different occasions. The SA V s are
easy to program and easily reconfigurable regarding navigation systems and material
handling equipment. Novel approaches to materials handling like the SA V -concept
place new requirements on the AGVS development and the use of simulation as a part
of the process. Traditional AGV -system simulation approaches do not fully meet these
requirements and the improved functionality of AGVs is not used to its full power.
There is a considerflble potential in shortening the AGV -system design-cycle, and thus
the manufacturing system design-cycle, and still achieve more accurate solutions well
suited for MRS tasks.
Recent developments in simulation tools for manufacturing have improved production
engineering development and the tools are being adopted more widely in industry. For
the development of AGV -systems this has not fully been exploited. Previous research
has focused on the conceptual part of the design process and many simulation
approaches to AGV -system design lack in validity. In this thesis a methodology is
proposed for the structured development of AGV -systems using simulation. Elements of
this methodology address the development of novel functionality.
The objective of the first research case of this research study was to identify factors for
industrial AGV -system simulation. The second research case focuses on simulation in
the design of Semi-autonomous vehicles, and the third case evaluates a simulation based
design framework. This research study has advanced development by offering a
framework for developing testing and evaluating AGV -systems, based on concurrent
development using a virtual environment. The ability to exploit unique or novel features
of AGVs based on a virtual environment improves the potential of AGV-systems

The P3 platform: an approach and software system for developing diagrammatic model-based methods in design research
Many issues in design and design management have been explored by building models which capture the relationships between different aspects of the problem at hand. These models require computer support to construct and analyse. However, appropriate modelling tools can be time-consuming to develop in a research environment. Reflecting upon five design research projects, this paper proposes that such projects can be facilitated by recognising the iterative and tightly-coupled nature of research and tool development, and by attempting to minimise the effort of solution prototyping within this process. Our approach is enabled by a software platform which can be rapidly configured to implement many conceivable modelling approaches. This configurability is complemented by an emerging library of modelling and analysis approaches tailored to explore design process systems. The platform-based approach enables any mix of modelling concepts to be easily created. We propose it could thus help researchers to explore a wide range of questions without being constrained to existing conventions for modelling – or for model integration
A new test framework for communications-critical large scale systems
None of today’s large scale systems could function without the reliable availability of a varied range of network communications capabilities. Whilst software, hardware and communications technologies have been advancing throughout the past two decades, the methods commonly used by industry for testing large scale systems which incorporate critical communications interfaces have not kept pace. This paper argues for the need for a specifically tailored framework to achieve effective and precise testing of communications-critical large scale systems (CCLSSs). The paper briefly discusses how generic test approaches are leading to inefficient and costly test activities in industry. The paper then outlines the features of an alternative CCLSS domain-specific test framework, and then provides an example based on a real case study. The paper concludes with an evaluation of the benefits observed during the case study and an outline of the available evidence that such benefits can be realized with other comparable systems
Modeling of system knowledge for efficient agile manufacturing : tool evaluation, selection and implementation scenario in SMEs
In the manufacturing world, knowledge is fundamental in order to achieve effective and efficient real time decision making. In order to make manufacturing system knowledge available to the decision maker it has to be first captured and then modelled. Therefore tools that provide a suitable means for capturing and representation of manufacturing system knowledge are required in several types of industrial sectors and types of company’s (large, SME). A literature review about best practice for capturing requirements for simulation development and system knowledge modeling has been conducted. The aim of this study was to select the best tool for manufacturing system knowledge modelling in an open-source environment. In order to select this tool, different criteria were selected, based on which several tools were analyzed and rated. An exemplary use case was then developed using the selected tool, Systems Modeling Language (SysML). Therefore, the best practice has been studied, evaluated, selected and then applied to two industrial use cases by the use of a selected opens source tool.peer-reviewe
CoFeD: A visualisation framework for comparative quality evaluation
Evaluation for the purpose of selection can be a challenging task particularly when there is a plethora of choices available. Short-listing, comparisons and eventual choice(s) can be aided by visualisation techniques. In this paper we use Feature Analysis, Tabular and Tree Representations and Composite Features Diagrams (CFDs) for profiling user requirements and for top-down profiling and evaluation of items (methods, tools, techniques, processes and so on) under evaluation. The resulting framework CoFeD enables efficient visual comparison and initial short-listing. The second phase uses bottom-up quantitative evaluation which aids the elimination of the weakest items and hence the effective selection of the most appropriate item.
The versatility of the framework is illustrated by a case study comparison and evaluation of two agile methodologies. The paper concludes with limitations and indications of further work
Realising the open virtual commissioning of modular automation systems
To address the challenges in the automotive industry posed by the need to rapidly manufacture more
product variants, and the resultant need for more adaptable production systems, radical changes are
now required in the way in which such systems are developed and implemented. In this context, two
enabling approaches for achieving more agile manufacturing, namely modular automation systems
and virtual commissioning, are briefly reviewed in this contribution. Ongoing research conducted at
Loughborough University which aims to provide a modular approach to automation systems design
coupled with a virtual engineering toolset for the (re)configuration of such manufacturing
automation systems is reported. The problems faced in the virtual commissioning of modular
automation systems are outlined. AutomationML - an emerging neutral data format which has
potential to address integration problems is discussed. The paper proposes and illustrates a
collaborative framework in which AutomationML is adopted for the data exchange and data
representation of related models to enable efficient open virtual prototype construction and virtual
commissioning of modular automation systems. A case study is provided to show how to create the
data model based on AutomationML for describing a modular automation system
