    Using domain specific languages to capture design knowledge for model-based systems engineering

    Design synthesis is a fundamental engineering task that involves the creation of structure from a desired functional specification; it involves both creating a system topology as well as sizing the system's components. Although the use of computer tools is common throughout the design process, design synthesis is often a task left to the designer. At the synthesis stage of the design process, designers have an extensive choice of design alternatives that need to be considered and evaluated. Designers can benefit from computational synthesis methods in the creative phase of the design process. Recent increases in computational power allow automated synthesis methods for rapidly generating a large number of design solutions. Combining an automated synthesis method with an evaluation framework allows for a more thorough exploration of the design space as well as for a reduction of the time and cost needed to design a system. To facilitate computational synthesis, knowledge about feasible system configurations must be captured. Since it is difficult to capture such synthesis knowledge about any possible system, a design domain must be chosen. In this thesis, the design domain is hydraulic systems. In this thesis, Model-Driven Software Development concepts are leveraged to create a framework to automate the synthesis of hydraulic systems will be presented and demonstrated. This includes the presentation of a domain specific language to describe the function and structure of hydraulic systems as well as a framework for synthesizing hydraulic systems using graph grammars to generate system topologies. Also, a method using graph grammars for generating analysis models from the described structural system representations is presented. This approach fits in the context of Model-Based Systems Engineering where a variety of formal models are used to represent knowledge about a system.     Model-driven description and validation of composite learning content

    Authoring of learning content for courseware systems is a complex activity requiring the combination of a range of design and validation techniques. We introduce the CAVIAr courseware models allowing for learning content description and validation. Model-based representation and analysis of different concerns such as the subject domain, learning context, resources and instructional design used are key contributors to this integrated solution. Personalised learning is particularly difficult to design as dynamic configurations cannot easily be predicted and tested. A tool-supported technique based on CAVIAr can alleviate this complexity through the validation of a set of pedagogical and non-pedagogical requirements.     Generation of folk song melodies using Bayes transforms

    The paper introduces the `Bayes transform', a mathematical procedure for putting data into a hierarchical representation. Applicable to any type of data, the procedure yields interesting results when applied to sequences. In this case, the representation obtained implicitly models the repetition hierarchy of the source. There are then natural applications to music. Derivation of Bayes transforms can be the means of determining the repetition hierarchy of note sequences (melodies) in an empirical and domain-general way. The paper investigates application of this approach to Folk Song, examining the results that can be obtained by treating such transforms as generative models

    Going Beyond Functionings to Capabilities : an Econometric Model to Explain and Estimate Capabilities

    Any attempt to operationalise the capability approach necessitates an adequate framework for the measurement of the abstract unobservable multidimensional concept that the term human development stands for. One such attempt is the latent variable approach including principal components, factor analysis and MIMIC models. The first two models provide estimates of the latent variables but are silent on the factors influencing these variables (capabilities in our context). MIMIC models represent a step further in this direction as they include exogenous ā€œcausalā€ variables for the latent factors but the effects go only in one direction i.e. from the ā€œcausesā€ to the latent variables. We argue that some of these causal factors not only influence human development but they are also influenced by it and that unless this feedback mechanism is taken into account we do not have a complete picture of this complex phenomenon. In this paper we present a theoretical framework incorporating the above aspects into a coherent system of causes, effects and interactions, leading to an econometric model which represents a generalisation of existing latent variable models. Estimating the model will enable us to explain the level of capabilities, say how they can be best improved, test our theoretical hypotheses and derive estimators that reflect the actual capabilities rather than just the functionings.human development, capability approach, latent variables, qualitative response, simultaneous equations.

An increased difficulty is found in treating cultural differences, common knowledge making the most hidden part of any foreign environment. Managing cultural knowledge is crucial to success in cultivating and maintaining long-term business relationships in multicultural environments. Knowledge Management provides the long needed technological support for cross-cultural management in the tedious task of improving knowledge sharing in multi-national companies and using knowledge effectively in international joint ventures.
