The British Orthoptic Society published the first British
Orthoptic Journal in 1939, the second appeared in 1944
then, with the exception of 1946, annually. In the first
copy of the British Orthoptic Journal the editorial
outlines the events leading up to the formation of the
British Orthoptic Society, and this and the subsequent
history of the Society is described in the 1987 editorial,
the year of the Society’s Golden Jubilee. In the
president’s letter published in that first edition, Mary

The Review Process in Economics: Is it Too Fast?
Rewards for publications in good economics journals are very high, while submission fees and other monetary costs associated with submitting an existing manuscript are low. Consequently, the editorial delay (especially the first response time – the time until the first editorial decision), by postponing monetary rewards to publication, constitutes the major submission cost (from the author’s perspective). Reducing the delay will induce many additional submissions of low-quality papers to good journals, increasing significantly the workload of editors and referees. Moreover, the rejection rate will increase and cause papers to be rejected more times prior to publication, offsetting at least some of the shorter first response times. As a result, the efforts of many editors to reduce the editorial delay, while attracting more submissions to their journals, may have adverse effects from a social perspective, and the optimal delay might be longer than the current average of four months.Review process, refereeing, publishing, academia, research, first response times, academic review process
Astronomy and Computing: a New Journal for the Astronomical Computing Community
We introduce \emph{Astronomy and Computing}, a new journal for the growing
population of people working in the domain where astronomy overlaps with
computer science and information technology. The journal aims to provide a new
communication channel within that community, which is not well served by
current journals, and to help secure recognition of its true importance within
modern astronomy. In this inaugural editorial, we describe the rationale for
creating the journal, outline its scope and ambitions, and seek input from the
community in defining in detail how the journal should work towards its
high-level goals.Comment: 5 pages, no figures; editorial for first edition of journa
Methodology in our madness
It is a great pleasure to present the first issue of a new journal. However, the more sceptical reader might wonder whether yet another new journal is really needed. In this editorial we attempt to justify our self-indulgence and to set out our vision for Survey Research Methods

Comments from the Guest Editor
I want to take this opportunity to share some thoughts with the readers of Explorations about the association and the journal. The new editorial staff is in the process of making several significant changes in format as well as content of the publications. The first new beginning is a new logo, a logo which has as its central symbol the character meaning the source
