Design Transactions
Design Transactions presents the outcome of new research to emerge from âInnochainâ, a consortium of six leading European architectural and engineering-focused institutions and their industry partners. The book presents new advances in digital design tooling that challenge established building cultures and systems. It offers new sustainable and materially smart design solutions with a strong focus on changing the way the industry thinks, designs, and builds our physical environment.

Prototyping for Research and Industry
In this thesis we want to present some of the activities carried out during the PhD studies held at the PhD School "L. da Vinci" in the period from January 2012 to December 2014.
The activities were held in the fields of robotics and mechanical engineering, and the main theme was the prototyping of new concepts, as well as the activity of conceptual design in its different phases, from generation of the idea, to the realization and testing of prototypes.
The conceptual design phase is of fundamental importance to structure the process of generation of new ideas. Sometimes it is a process that is carried out unconsciously by the inventor. Providing a tool that allows to guide him in the various stages of idea generation can lead to advantages that let the inventor to explore areas from which take inspiration, which otherwise would not have been taken into account.
An aspect of fundamental importance in the development of new prototypes is a process that goes in the opposite direction of the idea generation phase. Initially the conceptual design tends to provide tools to generate as many ideas as possible, but at some point there is the need to select a limited number of cases to investigate. Through the selection phase, which can be structured at levels more or less structured, and more or less qualitative/quantitative, the inventor tends to identify, case by case, which are the ideas in which is worth investing time and resources, before moving to the following stages.
Prototyping, as well as its previous phase, now commonly called pretotyping, are mandatory steps for those who want to develop any new idea. The success of the final product or service may depend from the analysis of the pretotype first, and of the prototype later, since it allows to detect limits and possible improvements of the concept before moving to the final implementation phase

on his experience, for providing a stimulating and cheerful research environment
in his laboratory, for letting me participate in the projects that
produced results for papers, thus made me more aware of the state of the
art in Computer Vision, especially in the area of 3D recognition. Also for
his encouraging support and his way to always nd time for discussions,
and last but not the least for the cooking recipes...

Production Engineering and Management
The annual International Conference on Production Engineering and Management takes place for the sixth time his year, and can therefore be considered a well - established event that is the result of the joint effort of the OWL University of Applied Sciences and the University of Trieste. The conference has been established as an annual meeting under the Double Degree Master Program âProduction Engineering and Managementâ by the two partner universities.
The main goal of the conference is to provide an opportunity for students, researchers and professionals from Germany, Italy and abroad, to meet and exchange information, discuss experiences, specific practices and technical solutions used in planning, design and management of production and service systems. In addition, the conference is a platform aimed at presenting research projects, introducing young academics to the tradition of
Symposiums and promoting the exchange of ideas between the industry and the academy. Especially the contributions of successful graduates of the Double Degree Master Program âProduction Engineering and Managementâ and those of other postgraduate researchers from several European countries have been enforced.
This yearâs special focus is on Direct Digital Manufacturing in the context of Industry 4.0, a topic of great interest for the global industry. The concept is spreading, but the actual solutions must be presented in order to highlight
the practical benefits to industry and customers. Indeed, as Henning Banthien, Secretary General of the German
âPlattform Industrie 4.0â project office, has recently remarked, âIndustry 4.0 requires a close alliance amongst the private sector, academia, politics and trade unionsâ in order to be âtranslated into practice and be implemented nowâ.
PEM 2016 takes place between September 29 and 30, 2016 at the OWL University of Applied Sciences in Lemgo. The program is defined by the Organizing and Scientific Committees and clustered into scientific sessions
covering topics of main interest and importance to the participants of the conference. The scientific sessions deal
with technical and engineering issues, as well as management topics, and include contributions by researchers from academia and industry. The extended abstracts and full papers of the contributions underwent a double -
blind review process. The 24 accepted presentations are assigned, according to their subject, to one of the following sessions: âDirect Digital Manufacturing in the Context of Industry 4.0â, âIndustrial Engineering and Lean Managementâ, âManagement Techniques and Methodologiesâ, âWood Processing Technologies and Furniture Productionâ and âInnovation Techniques and Methodologies
