A polynomial kernel for Block Graph Deletion
In the Block Graph Deletion problem, we are given a graph on vertices
and a positive integer , and the objective is to check whether it is
possible to delete at most vertices from to make it a block graph,
i.e., a graph in which each block is a clique. In this paper, we obtain a
kernel with vertices for the Block Graph Deletion problem.
This is a first step to investigate polynomial kernels for deletion problems
into non-trivial classes of graphs of bounded rank-width, but unbounded
tree-width. Our result also implies that Chordal Vertex Deletion admits a
polynomial-size kernel on diamond-free graphs. For the kernelization and its
analysis, we introduce the notion of `complete degree' of a vertex. We believe
that the underlying idea can be potentially applied to other problems. We also

Fast Dynamic Graph Algorithms for Parameterized Problems
Fully dynamic graph is a data structure that (1) supports edge insertions and
deletions and (2) answers problem specific queries. The time complexity of (1)
and (2) are referred to as the update time and the query time respectively.
There are many researches on dynamic graphs whose update time and query time
are , that is, sublinear in the graph size. However, almost all such
researches are for problems in P. In this paper, we investigate dynamic graphs
for NP-hard problems exploiting the notion of fixed parameter tractability
(FPT).
We give dynamic graphs for Vertex Cover and Cluster Vertex Deletion
parameterized by the solution size . These dynamic graphs achieve almost the
best possible update time and the query time
, where is the time complexity of any static
graph algorithm for the problems. We obtain these results by dynamically
maintaining an approximate solution which can be used to construct a small
problem kernel. Exploiting the dynamic graph for Cluster Vertex Deletion, as a
corollary, we obtain a quasilinear-time (polynomial) kernelization algorithm
for Cluster Vertex Deletion. Until now, only quadratic time kernelization
algorithms are known for this problem.
We also give a dynamic graph for Chromatic Number parameterized by the
solution size of Cluster Vertex Deletion, and a dynamic graph for
bounded-degree Feedback Vertex Set parameterized by the solution size. Assuming
the parameter is a constant, each dynamic graph can be updated in
time and can compute a solution in time. These results are obtained by

Hitting and Harvesting Pumpkins
The "c-pumpkin" is the graph with two vertices linked by c>0 parallel edges.
A c-pumpkin-model in a graph G is a pair A,B of disjoint subsets of vertices of
G, each inducing a connected subgraph of G, such that there are at least c
edges in G between A and B. We focus on covering and packing c-pumpkin-models
in a given graph: On the one hand, we provide an FPT algorithm running in time
2^O(k) n^O(1) deciding, for any fixed c>0, whether all c-pumpkin-models can be
covered by at most k vertices. This generalizes known single-exponential FPT
algorithms for Vertex Cover and Feedback Vertex Set, which correspond to the
cases c=1,2 respectively. On the other hand, we present a O(log
n)-approximation algorithm for both the problems of covering all
c-pumpkin-models with a smallest number of vertices, and packing a maximum
number of vertex-disjoint c-pumpkin-models.Comment: v2: several minor change
Parameterized Complexity of Deletion to Scattered Graph Classes
Graph-modification problems, where we add/delete a small number of vertices/edges to make the given graph to belong to a simpler graph class, is a well-studied optimization problem in all algorithmic paradigms including classical, approximation and parameterized complexity. Specifically, graph-deletion problems, where one needs to delete at most k vertices to place it in a given non-trivial hereditary (closed under induced subgraphs) graph class, captures several well-studied problems including Vertex Cover, Feedback Vertex Set, Odd Cycle Transveral, Cluster Vertex Deletion, and Perfect Deletion. Investigation into these problems in parameterized complexity has given rise to powerful tools and techniques. While a precise characterization of the graph classes for which the problem is fixed-parameter tractable (FPT) is elusive, it has long been known that if the graph class is characterized by a finite set of forbidden graphs, then the problem is FPT.
In this paper, we initiate a study of a natural variation of the problem of deletion to scattered graph classes where we need to delete at most k vertices so that in the resulting graph, each connected component belongs to one of a constant number of graph classes. A simple hitting set based approach is no longer feasible even if each of the graph classes is characterized by finite forbidden sets. As our main result, we show that this problem (in the case where each graph class has a finite forbidden set) is fixed-parameter tractable by a O^*(2^(k^O(1))) algorithm, using a combination of the well-known techniques in parameterized complexity - iterative compression and important separators. Our approach follows closely that of a related problem in the context of satisfiability [Ganian, Ramanujan, Szeider, TAlg 2017], where one wants to find a small backdoor set so that the resulting CSP (constraint satisfaction problem) instance belongs to one of several easy instances of satisfiability. While we follow the main idea from this work, there are some challenges for our problem which we needed to overcome.
When there are two graph classes with finite forbidden sets to get to, and if one of the forbidden sets has a path, then we show that the problem has a (better) singly exponential algorithm and a polynomial sized kernel. We also design an efficient FPT algorithm for a special case when one of the graph classes has an infinite forbidden set. Specifically, we give a O^*(4^k) algorithm to determine whether k vertices can be deleted from a given graph so that in the resulting graph, each connected component is a tree (the sparsest connected graph) or a clique (the densest connected graph)
The Graph Motif problem parameterized by the structure of the input graph
The Graph Motif problem was introduced in 2006 in the context of biological
networks. It consists of deciding whether or not a multiset of colors occurs in
a connected subgraph of a vertex-colored graph. Graph Motif has been mostly
analyzed from the standpoint of parameterized complexity. The main parameters
which came into consideration were the size of the multiset and the number of
colors. Though, in the many applications of Graph Motif, the input graph
originates from real-life and has structure. Motivated by this prosaic
observation, we systematically study its complexity relatively to graph
structural parameters. For a wide range of parameters, we give new or improved
FPT algorithms, or show that the problem remains intractable. For the FPT
cases, we also give some kernelization lower bounds as well as some ETH-based
lower bounds on the worst case running time. Interestingly, we establish that
Graph Motif is W[1]-hard (while in W[P]) for parameter max leaf number, which

Parameterized vertex deletion problems for hereditary graph classes with a block property
For a class of graphs P, the Bounded P-Block Vertex Deletion problem asks, given a graph G on n vertices and positive integers k and d, whether there is a set S of at most k vertices such that each block of G − S has at most d vertices and is in P. We show that when P satisfies a natural hereditary property and is recognizable in polynomial time, Bounded P-Block Vertex Deletion can be solved in time 2O(k log d)nO(1), and this running time cannot be improved to 2o(k log d)nO(1), in general, unless the Exponential Time Hypothesis fails. On the other hand, if P consists of only complete graphs, or only K1,K2, and cycle graphs, then Bounded P-Block Vertex Deletion admits a cknO(1)-time algorithm for some constant c independent of d. We also show that Bounded P-Block Vertex Deletion admits a kernel with O(k2d7) vertices. © Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany 2016
A Polynomial Kernel for Deletion to Ptolemaic Graphs
For a family of graphs F, given a graph G and an integer k, the F-Deletion problem asks whether we can delete at most k vertices from G to obtain a graph in the family F. The F-Deletion problems for all non-trivial families F that satisfy the hereditary property on induced subgraphs are known to be NP-hard by a result of Yannakakis (STOC\u2778). Ptolemaic graphs are the graphs that satisfy the Ptolemy inequality, and they are the intersection of chordal graphs and distance-hereditary graphs. Equivalently, they form the set of graphs that do not contain any chordless cycles or a gem as an induced subgraph. (A gem is the graph on 5 vertices, where four vertices form an induced path, and the fifth vertex is adjacent to all the vertices of this induced path.) The Ptolemaic Deletion problem is the F-Deletion problem, where F is the family of Ptolemaic graphs. In this paper we study Ptolemaic Deletion from the viewpoint of Kernelization Complexity, and obtain a kernel with ?(k?) vertices for the problem
